The Yesterday Show: Part 1

You all know the background by now: powerful East Coast Low, strong winds, big waves etc etc etc...but what about the surf? The rideable stuff? Well, there weren't that many places handling the swell yesterday so the range is a bit limited. This stretch on Sydney's Northern Beaches was one of the few places coping with the swell and it put on a fair display throughout the day.

Volcom Fiji Pro Laydays

Tough life waiting on a tropical for a big swell to hit. The activities are limited: surf six foot Cloudbreak, tan your inner thighs, play bocce, or get roaring drunk. If you're Facebook friends with any of 'the boys' you've probably seen them doing the latter. The notorious skulldrag being the drink of choice.

But in the interest of responsible drinking and good public relations here are the G rated, ASP-endorsed photos from the Volcom Fiji Pro laydays.

The Yesterday Show: Part 2

More photos from The Yesterday Show in Sydney. This time they were taken during the morning session when the swell was at its biggest. It's worth questioning how big the wave in shot 6 (todays Wave of the Day) is. And considering the surfer - Benny Serrano - is on the foam it's also worth questioning how big the wave before it was.

The Yesterday Show: South Coast

With nowhere near his home handling yesterday's storm swell Sydney Eastern Suburb's photographer, Charlie Straumeitis, pointed the chariot south for some reefbreak action. Although the size was a bit smaller than that hitting up the coast the trip wasn't completely in vain.

Fair Weather Frends

While NSW braced itself for impact from an East Coast Low bearing cyclonic winds and large, ugly waves residents of the Sunshine Coast basked in warm sunshine and head-high waves. Lovely stuff...

Jack Dekort shot friends Ziggy Alberts, Ryan Daley, Jasper Endersby and Jordan Merry living it up, oblivious to the drama 1000 k's south.

The Beach With No Name

It's been named in the Beach Boys 1963 song Surfin' Safari, it's home to more world champs - mens, groms, masters - than any other beach, and at one end has a very famous waves which is guarded by a cadre of hot and hostile locals, yet it's still not cool to name this beach. Unless you're a famous local, that is. In that case post as many photos and as much info on your Facebook page as you like.

For us though, and for photographer Louis Carramaschi, we'll do our bit for secrecy - portraits from a beach with no name.

The Innermost Limits

Never mind the size, check the shape: smooth, hollow and throwing into foot deep water. Andrew Edwards (that's Edwards with an 's') gets more than up close and personal, he gets inside and intimate with the waves.

Volcom Fiji Pro Round 2

There are only two photos in this batch that don't feature barrels, likewise there were only two waves ridden all morning that a surfer didn't get barrelled on. Actually, that's bullshit...the last couple of heats were stinkers with inconsistent waves and a light northerly onshore. But up till then...woo yeah, barrels!

Volcom Fiji Pro Round 1

Kelly Slater got poked by a last minute Mitch Coleborn pit, Flores the Flowerful notched up the highest scoring wave, and plenty of competitors didn't make double figures for their two wave total. Cloudbreak was perfect for Round 1 of the Volcom Fiji Pro but it was also shifty and inconsistent, experience and a hearty dose of luck went hell of a long way.

South by South-West

From Tasmania to Western Australia's south-west, Mick Gullan has made the move from one wave-rich region to another. And the welcome he got over west was worth the troubles. They've had a good run of swell since Mick set his suitcase down so he's been behind the lens whenever he's not on the board. Never mind the unpacked boxes.

One Crowded Hour

Yeah, they're all crowded hours on the Gold Coast breaks but the locals get their share regardless of the numbers. During this session Mick, Hammo, Eddie Kelly, Gossman and others - including a dangerously high-flying Joe Haddon - picked off the best of the sets. Kudos to the longboarder stalling while setting up a stylish layback (Shot 5).
