Swellnet Sessions

Here, there and every air

OK, after reading the title you don't have to be a gumshoe to know there'll be an air or two in these photos. In fact, beside the first two shots Jerome Forrest and Creed McTaggart throw down a whole gamut of variations in this gallery. All were taken in WA's south-west by full-time surfer, part-time photographer, Nick Burkett.

Flash Filled Fun

Derek Hynd has his Friction Free Fun but over in the west Mike Maxted and Mitch Taylor have their own version of FFF - flash filled fun. An activity done, by the looks of it, on some friggen funky fins.

Mitch flies while Mike fires the flash.

Put yourself in the picture

Actually...put yourself in the pictures. Because photographer, Grant Davis, has stuffed himself inside of more than one clean barrel to capture the view. So tuck your shoulder in, brush your fingers across the face...hell, maybe chuck a peace sign if no-one's looking, just get in the mood to mindsurf these suckers.

All photos by Grant.

Oney Anwar: the one and only

Lightning fast and quick as a whip, that's Oney Anwar. There's only one of him but you'd swear there's more. Triplets, perhaps. Because Oney just caught a wave yet there's a fella that looks like him already out the back, and there's another guy that looks like him in a barrel on the left. And they're all grinning madly. Yep, he's fast, he's everywhere, and he's getting six wave to your one.

Jack and the Turtle

Here's a tale to warm your inner Rastovich...

Yesterday morning photographer, Jack Dekort, and his mate Tom went for a wee bodysurf down at Coolum Beach. While the duo were frolicking, rolling and getting all Malloy in the small waves they were joined by a curious turtle. The turtle shot the waves with Tom, riding low and holding his own in the impact zone. For a few minutes they all shared the water together, the short commune with nature sparking an otherwise humdrum bodysurf.

Where the beach has no name

With an easterly swell brewing and a westerly wind blowing Luke Daniels, Dunstan Foss and Jeremy Shanahan follow the highway south. After a few hours of travel they find a nondescript stretch of beach and rack up countless barrels. A day away from the whirlwind of work, school and family is well rewarded.

And yeah, of course this joint has a name, this ain't no Magical Mystery Tour, Wizard of Oz-type shit. Simply be buggered if we're gonna drop the details.

All photos by Jeremy Shanahan.

Rise on the 'Shine

Jack Dekort captures the essence of an early morning surf check on the Sunshine Coast: barefoot assessments while squinting into a briliant sunrise. Down at sea level Jack shoots Ziggy Alberts and others revelling in the fruits of an early morning start.

Indonesia Report: Still Rising, Still Shining

If John Barton didn't make an impression in this morning's Swellnet Session then this one should ram the point home: Early season has been pumping in Indo. John is the photographer/guide at Pitstop Hill Resort, Mentawai, and these photos were all taken nearby.

Gaaf Dhaal

One of the most well travelled surf photographers in the country, Joel Coleman from Saltmotion Photography just got back from another trip to the Maldives. Joel was aboard the MV Cobia and took many great images from the remote Gaaf Dhaal atoll of the Maldives. The group he was with scored great waves and it needn't be said that crowds weren't an issue.

Jughead & Hyde

A fine, upstanding member of the community is Justin 'Jughead' Allport. Even works in the most respected of occupations - a fireman. Cat stuck up the tree? House ablaze? Jug's the man to coming roaring around the corner and bring order to the situation. Cool things down with his calm, methodical thinking.

Clocking On

Autumn on the Goldy is good, but it ain't overhead pointbreak pits all the time. Between swells the regulars gotta seek out the wave magnets to get their daily fix. In this Session it's the before work crew at D'Bah, Hammo (frontside air, fourth shot), Quinn Bruce and Noah Lane, all clocking on for the daily grind.

All photos by Jack Dekort.

Chris Dixon: Creature of the shallows

Photorapher Chris Dixon isn't intimidated by shallow ledges. Being able to starfish through knee-deep water as the next set approaches is a requisite skill for the Cronulla-based photographer. In fact, all his photographic muses - meaning waves not surfers, Dixon is empty wave enthusiast - break in startlingly shallow water. Rather than dreamy seascapes his are the inner workings of dramatic, often violent, waves taken moments before implosion.
