Swellnet Sessions

Taking the 'Cake

When Monday's south swell hit in Sydney crew with time on their hands bolted north or south. There's not that many places that handle the prevailing swell and wind conditions within the city limits. One of the few places that was handling it, although it was a bit wild and woolly, kept Eastern Suburbs surfers busy all morning.

Charlie Straumeitis parked himself on the headland and shot surfers taking the 'Cake.

Fat Free Side Dish

Following on from this morning's Session...after shooting the fuller-figured waves at the 'Cake photographer Charlie S also shot a leaner, more muscley wave nearby. Ain't no fat on this sucker.

Truth in Advertising

Call yourself The Perfect Wave Travel Company and you've set yourself a lofty goal. When those customers walk through the door they've got high and hollow expectations - can't blame 'em either.

A recent crew on the Samudra Biru found no reson to call the ACCC following their Mentawai charter. Even scored 'emselves a couple of perfect waves into the deal.

Late Drop

Late drop...

...nought to do with late takeoffs, though I'm sure there were plenty on this day. With the last East Coast swell all but gone and a new one firing up the Tasman Alex Ormerod drops a score of killer images from the swell that was. Late they may be yet they're warmly received.

Josh Fuller is the stylemaster in the sequence.

One more day of denial

The anguish of being a surf photographer!

For six days the Gold and Sunshine Coast's have been pumping and Swellnet photographer, Jack Dekort, hasn't surfed once. Oh, he's been in the water alright, scored a raft of killer photos, but is yet to catch a wave himself. Commitment? Devotion? Deranged..? Whatever, from our point of view his denial oughta be applauded.

These photos are from Thursday at you-know-where. We'll have more of Jack's hard-earned images - with some utter gold amongst them - on the site early next week.

Ziggy Alberts: Sunshine & Stardust

Ziggy Alberts: There's a name you'll be hearing more of in the future. Guaranteed. And if the talent scouts haven't already got him pegged then you can bet he's registering on the radar.

Kid comes straight off the block ready assembled. Plays guitar left-handed, sings self-penned songs in a lilting voice and he's got a gravity defying coiffure sure to send teenage girls who could care less about his musical chops wild. Plus he's got a rocking moniker; no need for a stage name or intervention by deed poll for this kid. There it is on his birth certificate: 'Ziggy'.

Solitary Man

Lately we've been running a hell of a lot of sessions from the Gold Coast and other congested quarters of Australia's East Coast. All places pumping, no doubt, yet with hefty crowds detracting from the idyll. So here's the tonic: One surfer - Simon McShane - spreading his wings in an isolated lineup somewhere on a south facing coastline.

There's only six shots in the session but I think you get the drift...

Snapping Frog Love

It's hard to get a fresh photographic angle on the wave at Snapper, just as it's hard to come up with a fresh title for the photographic gallery it sits in. Photographer Hamish Laing has done his bit, swimming between Lovers Rock, Froggies and Snapper capturing the waves in their many moods. And me, well, I've done my part too with a crafty title for this session - Snapping Frog Love.

God, the weekend can't come soon enough....

1 Hour Photo

Not trying to say it's been a long time since Ray Collins took watershots but the last time he hit the water Ray had to hang an hour at the Kodak shop to see the results. Bit different this time around. Ray, along with Dom Wills, Michael Hopkins and some good-natured but hard-charging locals, recently hit up a reef north of Ulladulla. In just one hour of swimming he had the results fresh in his hands. And here they are, straight from Ray to you...

Headin' South...

You've probably heard enough guff about how 'everywhere' in Australia has been pumping this Autumn. Well, I'm here to tell you it's kinda true. What you haven't been privy to is photos of everwhere that's been pumping, but we'll try to address that now.

Recently Ben Overgaauw photographed one little corner of the continent as it entertained a handful of locals. To be more precise it was one little corner of one little island just off the continent. Somewhere the temperature is quickly heading south as the winter approaches. For now though it looks positively delectable.

Elourea-watu

Elouera-watu: Way better than Mona-watu, almost as good as Uluwatu.

Charlie Straumeitis sat on the dune at Elourea, chuggin' Bintangs and lungin' Gudangs just to get in the spirit, as Elouera did it's best Indonesian impersonation.

Sandstone and Sand

The swell that hit the East Coast over the weekend was a good all-rounder. Not only was it easterly in direction, getting into most coastal nooks, but the mid-range size sparked up the reefs without overpowering the beaches. Plenty of places, therefore, were pumping, not the least of them the Sutherland Shire, as Charlie Straumeitis' photos attest.
