Swellnet Sessions

Behind the Lens: 2

This could become a new department: Injured surfers taking shit hot surf photos.

Last week I ran a Swellnet Session of a rare Tasmanian pointbreak as photographed by Stuart Dillon. Stuart was land-bound with an injury and unable to surf so he unpacked the camera and happily snapped away.

By Any Other Name

You wanna jag a few sets out at this hefty Cenny Coast slab? Make a name for yourself, perhaps? Well, best you shake off the moniker your parents gave you and rock something new. Like Rodent, Wanga, or Jughead, all seen getting horribly pitted in these shots. Or like The Wiz or Duck, two pioneers at this joint still known to scratch into a few.

Luxury Holiday

The last few times that Swellnet forecaster, Craig Brokensha, has taken annual leave it's coincided with great surf on the East Coast. 'Good timing,' you might say and you'd be kind've right. Rather than spending his holidays here on the East Coast however, Craig's been spending it a few thousand k's away where he's also getting good waves minus the East Coast crowds.

Western Tension

OK, we can hear the grumblings from over here. For the last few weeks - hell, probably the last few months - West Oz has been getting pumped by swell yet what have you seen on Swellnet - not much since the big Drug Pro went down at Margies. So then, this is our meagre attempt to bring some parity to the party. Clean lines and slick moves in and around Perth with all photos taken by local snapper, Mike Maxted.

PS: That's Luke Campbell swingin' from the rafters.

Mix Tape

Jack Dekort has been spicing things up of late. Varying his shots between tack-sharp hi-fi images of Ziggy Alberts, kinetic speed blurs of Matt Hill, and moody empties in a Jon Frank vein. P'raps he's curious, or bored, or adaptable...whatever, here's his talest mix from a week on the Sunny Coast.

Alex Ormerod

Although surf photography is a branch of the wider art of photography it is itself split into many categories: watershots, fisheye, action, land-based, travel, portaiture. Many photographers dabble in the categories - after all, it's the photogs lot to be versatile - yet those who make a mark usually only do so in one particular discipline.

Behind The Lens

Speaking personally, whenever I'm injured and missing good waves I do my utmost to get away from the coast. I can't sit and watch because the feeling of missing out eats me up inside. Some might have better coping mechanisms but I don't count myself amongst them.

Green Flash

Northern Beaches photographer, Rob Woodward, is a versatile fella. Be it architecture, landscape, travel or portrait, Rob has an impressive photography portfolio to suit. He's even a dab hand at surf photography, and not just the tripod-on-the-sand type surf photography either.

Here Rob has a couple of great hook ups with Pat Gleeson at an unnamed Sydney reef. Pat flashing by at close range, arms set in a classic tube stance, as Rob catches the perfect backlit angle.

Tropical Romp

Finishing off the Fijian series started last week is this batch of photos by Ryan Williams. No theme or story other than random photos of Fijian perfection taken during his tropical romp.

Ground Floor Up

Sydney photographer, Toby Manson, gives us a great perspective of waves breaking during the last east swell in Sydney. These photos are taken both north and south of the harbour. The last shot showing a nasty basement that you'd do well to avoid.

All Over Sunshine

After four days of persistent nor-east swell East Coast surfers are burnt out and tired (well, I am anyway). The nor-east angle meant most places got an equal share of the swell so quality came down to local bank conditions. Fortunately many of the banks on the Sunshine Coast are in good order so the coast north of Caloundra was as good as anywhere.

Swellnet photographer, Jack Dekort, spent the weekend trawling the Sunshine Coast scoring the goods at various places. With him were Mitch Adams, Ziggy Alberts and Levi Torrisi.
