Swellnet Sessions

Starting Point Cronulla

The East Coast, Australia's most populous coastline, has just been hit by an unrelenting, mid-range E/NE swell providing 1001 surf stories to those who got amongst it. So, where to start the storytelling? Hows about Cronulla Point? It's urban, central, and it was a barrelling. Seems as good a point to start as any...

Tropical Pacific

From three months in Northern Indonesia to a month in Fiji, Gold Coast photographer, Ryan Williams, has been firmly tethered to the tropics. Whilst in Fiji he got hit by a cyclone and stranded without power, water or a toilet. He also scored the obligatory blue water barrels.

Here's the first Session in a short series.

Birds of Paradise

Gold Coast photographer, Ryan Williams, ain't the sort of fella to go birdwatching on holidays yet when a flock of terns recently flew through the Fijian lineup he kept shooting. The birds make for a brooding, Hitchcock vision against the perfect tropical barrels. Except, that is, for the bloke spreading his own wings in the last shot. Ain't nothin' spooky about him.

PS: I can't confirm if the birds are terns but in the course of research - yeah, I take this shit seriously - I found out there's a bird called a Rough-faced Shag.

Steel Grey

If you live on the eastern seaboard the colour, or lack thereof, in these photos will be familiar to you. After three days of low cloud and persistent rain the coast has been wiped of colour and taken a steel grey apearance. Fitting then to run these shots by Steen Barnes. They were taken recently at an Illawarra area creekmouth and feature young Jack Matkowski, big Wade Budd and Dane Cartwright (getting solidly pitted) during a grey overcast day.

All photos by Steen. To see more of Steen's work visit his site.

Just Ace

Every day I get sent a lot of surfing photos. Megabytes of the things and even after years of opening bulging emails the contents rarely fail to get me excited. However, one aspect of the gig I particularly enjoy is when surfers I'm more used to seeing in front of the camera turn the tables. That is, when they grab a camera, swim around the impact zone, get pounded, and focus their attention on someone else.

Highway Run

It starts with the 3am crunch of tyres on a gravel driveway, boards in the back, minimal chat. Then thunder down the highway, toons on the deck, a cup of coffee, and warm to the day as the sun rises over an empty beach.

A few sessions on new terrain rounded out by a full-scale, take-no-prisoner bakery strike - Portuegese Tarts 'n all. Later bump into a few crew and have a sly sesh at a breakwall on the way home.

Early Season Balinese Perfection

During the Easter weekend, as every surfable coastline in Australia was hit by swell, Indonesia received its first significant swell of the season. Bali-based photographer, Mick Curley, spent two days driving around his island home shooting the waves from huge Outside Corner (that's Jim Banks in the first shot) to perfect Padang Padang and all the usual suspects on the Bukit. Mick also shot a few lesser known rights during the swell. We'll leave you to guess where they are.

Unknown, unsponsored, unbelievably shacked.

When this Duranbah sequence landed in front of me I was trying to identify who the surfer was. After all, with a smooth, mid-face transition into a long and well-ridden pit you'd think the fella would be sponsored, right?

Around the Grounds: Part 6 Victoria

And on to the last state in the Around the Grounds series - Victoria.

Like every other region Vicco got its share of Easter swell, and not just what was seen for the Finals of the Rip Curl Pro. Victorian photographer, Ed Sloane, caught a few of the pros - amongst them Jeremy Flores, Kolohe, Michel, Alejo and Adam Melling - ripping apart the back up site to the comp.

As you can see it was a good Easter all around.

Palette & Patellas

If you've seen the photographic work of Steen Barnes on Swellnet you'll know that his images have an idiosyncratic look. Steen's photos are saturated with the orange hues of early morning surf sessions and the greenish tint of the local Wollongong water.

And then there's the surfers in the frame: almost exclusively kneeboarders, and always tearing the Wollongong waves to shreds. In this batch it's two of his favourite muses, Chayne Simpson and Albert Munoz, busting airs and very nearly breaking patellas (check Chayne's air sequence!).

Around the Grounds: Part 4 South Australia

South Australia was another state that pumped during Easter, even the much maligned Mid Coast got in on the act (view gallery). Yet if the Mid Coast is pumping then it's a given that South Oz' other coasts will be off the hook.

Che Chorley knows this and clocked up the highway miles during a recent trip. In the course of his holiday Che managed to surf every...well, almost every, good wave in the state. OK, that's still a stretch, South Oz is a wave drenched place after all.
