Swellnet Sessions

Western wealth

Chris 'Swiv' Jones and Mitch Taylor make gluttons of themself in a veritable barrel fest near Perth. These photos were trimmed down from a much larger selection; the fellas did indeed gorge themselves silly and almost every image was a pit.

So what's the accumulated barrel time in a session like this: One minute? Longer...?

And the cost for cramped hamstrings and a brimful of memories? Just one busted fin.

Creatures big and small

You've only gotta see todays Wave of the Day to know Josiah Schmucker doesn't mind having a dig. Whether powered by machine or under his own steam he's very comfortable when the waves are coming out of the sky. But the fella they call Jap does have a softer side and it's on show in these photos, throwing quick weight transitions in smaller surf to stay in and around the barrel.

Spare a thought for the water photographer, Josh Taylor. If you know where then you'll know why.

Barrels, whales and warm(ish) water

Joel Coleman from Saltmotion Gallery just spent a couple of weeks in the Maldives scoring great waves along the way. He timed his return home well. "Leaving Sydney in the middle of winter to go on a tropical surf trip is a welcome dream. Coming home to two days of barrels, whales and above average water temperatures is the icing on the cake!"

Common Thread

Think this is the third time we've run shots of ol' Tom Swaddling on Swellnet. Each time he's doing the same thing so I can't really say much about him: Can he slice a cutty, hit the lip, boost above it? Couldn't tell you, but when it's hollow the lad knows how to thread one.

Not the Rip Curl Cup

Last Thursday the organisers of the Rip Curl Cup passed up an opportunity to run the comp because the waves didn't make the grade at Padang Padang. 'Tide too low and swell too inconsistent' was the call. Must've been a hard decision as these photos suggest a bit of quality rolling over the reef.

Flying On A Forecast

The Long Wave Trough had parked itself in perfect position, sending a large long-period sou-west groundswell towards the state, and the weather forecast was superb with light offshore winds and sunny skies.

Prime Numbers

Start counting: Four surfers out - Cam Lamperd, Ben Collier and two other lads - five waves to a set, each wave splitting two ways, for four straight hours. Makes a city surfers head spin...

Bush Week

Here's cheers to Dave Otto for going bush and capturing these images of Shippies earlier this week. From high up in his tick-ridden camp he looked down and into the barrel as Marti Paradisis, Tyler Hollmer-Cross and Danny Griffiths pulled in, the wide angle giving a fresh perspective of the enormity of the wave.

Happy Monday

It started off slow down at Shippies on Monday: undersized, inconsistent, the swell appeared too west. But sometime after lunch the conditions ramped up with the first 15 foot set hitting the reef. That set was followed by more, and though it remained inconsistent, the small crew on hand got an even share of the offerings.

A fine way to start the working week...

Bug On The Windscreen

How quickly the tides of fortune change.

One moment you've made a clean lift-off, the wind in your face, body tucked tight, listening to nought but the clean crash of lip...

...the next moment you've made contact and it all comes undone. A horrifying impact followed by a terrifying trip over the falls.

An unidentified surfer takes flight over the step at Shippies as Josh McDonald looks on. To see more of Josh's photography visit his website.

Kuta Laut

Friday afternoon. I'm about to lob out the door when the inbox goes ping. It's an email from a bloke called Trent, no last name offered. It's unsolicited, unexpected, but brimming with excitement and bad grammar. My favourite type of email. And the photos...!
