Swellnet Sessions

Baton Change

Ain't no grommet pole near this wave. When it comes to time for the youngsters to step up and claim their place in the line-up it's a simple matter of hucking themselves over the ledge and into a few thick ones.

Yes, a simple matter...

Billabong Pro J'Bay - Day 4

Point of order before we move to the main game: Everyone is hailing Heath Joske's move from Day 3, the high line run with his hands in the air, as an excellent soul arch. Yet I dispute that call, not that it wasn't excellent - damn right it was! - but that it was a soul arch. To me it looked like someone taking a high line run with their hands in the air. If you need something more succinct than that perhaps ol' Heath can lend a name to it.

Billabong Pro J'Bay - Day 3

This year the Billabong Pro J'Bay is a 6-star event. Star events don't have waiting periods like World Tour events do, they just unfurl the tent, blow the hooter and start banging out heats in whatever surf is in front of them.

As it happens the surf in front of them is better than what the J'Bay comp has received for many years as a high-flying, top-tier contest. For the third day running Supertubes pumped silly with no less than four 10-point rides dished out today - a new ASP record.

North to the South

It's all relative...man.

Direction: You can head north and still be further south than me. Temperature: You can warm right up and still remain cooler than me (admittedly not hard).

Elliot Gray takes a break from his Ocean Grove home in Vicco, heading north and getting warmer. Which means he's south of me and way cooler.

Billabong Pro J'Bay - Day 2

The Billabong Pro J'Bay: From no webcast on Day One to the state of the webcast on Day Two - internet complaining has never been so much fun!

Yep, Billabong fired up the webcast for Day Two but rotten tomatoes were being thrown from all quarters as transmission was reportedly timing out and the commentating was less than inspiring. Still, it pumped and that's what us hoary, unwashed mugs wanna see.

Ribbons and Reef

By Patrice Geraghty

My brother Pascal had just turned 30-years old. We went to the Mentawais aboard the Nusa Dewata to celebrate with Pascal's fiancee and three of his friends. The Dewata is a sick little boat for a small group. It only accommodates six people. I highly recommend her: The food was great, the boat clean and comfortable. Plus Jake Thompson is the biggest frother of a surf guide in the islands.

Billabong Pro J'Bay - Day 1

This year the Billabong Pro J'Bay has dropped the 'CT glam and gone old skool. Gone are the mincing primadonnas from the top tier ranks and in are the back room brawlers from the 'QS including a handful of South Africa's finest (surfers, not dagga).

Gone also is the webcast. Yep, it's just like old times with scores only available on the internet, Twitter, Blackberries and iPhones. Ahh, it takes me back...

Winter Chills

Words and photos by John Barton of Pitstop Hill Resort

Weʼre always stoked when Winter finally arrives. Sure, an easy statement for us to make from the comfort of life on the equator...weʼre not the ones donning icy, wet wetsuits on the freezing bitumen at dawn or losing the feeling in our extremities day in, day out. But while Jack Frost has been busy leaving his mark on the doorsteps of most Australians, heʼs also been busy delivering crispy, clean swells to ours.

Island Treasure

There are less than a handful of charter boats operating in the Banyaks and only one land-camp so the chances of scoring some world class waves to yourself is very high.

I have to admit that on the first couple of days of this trip we did not see any great waves. Sure we surfed, we surfed waves that were, for the most part, better than anything you would get on an average day on Australian beachbreaks. However, the swell was small and the winds a little too strong to offer up any Indonesian Perfection.

Copa Quiksilver El Salvador

I don't know much about this comp or the wave at which it's held - Punta Roca. From the photos it looks like a soft-topped Lennox transferred to shimmering tropical climes. Competitors were a mix of Latin America's finest, wide-ranging US 'QS warriors, and twilight pros such as Shane Beschen and Tom Curren.

In the end it was a gringo with the oh-so-American name of Hank Gaskell coming home over the top of Hawaiian, Dege O'Connell.

Delayed Response

These photos weren't taken today. They weren't taken yesterday. In fact, they weren't even taken this week.

Swellnet forecaster, Craig Brokensha, took them last Sunday during a fun little east swell on Sydney's northern beaches. Posting them on Swellnet was at the top of my 'to do' list on Monday morning.

So here we are, five days later, and I can finally tick the chore off the list. Hope y'all had a productive week too!
