Mr Price Pro - The pictures that tell a couple of words

At last year's Mr Price Pro the surf at Ballito pumped. Pumped!

This year the surf at Ballito has been rubbish. Rubbish! Tiny, gutless, sloppy li'l waves that are topping out at waist high and are terribly boring to look at. In fact, I think you wasted your time by clicking on this link.

So imagine how the surfers who flew halfway 'round the world to surf it are feeling.

Nothing Beats Rock.

"Good ol' rock. Nothing beats rock!"

After a series of bank busting swells the sand on the Sunshine Coast is currently in a state of disrepair. Wide gutters and deep banks are plaguing the beaches where just weeks ago there were A-frames and rip bowls.

Not to be beaten Ziggy Alberts and Jack Dekort hit up one of the Coast's more inaccessible and robust waves. No banks to bust out here, just a craggy reef and an abundance of wildlife.

Mr Price Pro, Ballito, 2011

The 2011 version of the Mr Price Pro at Ballito was one contest the organisers didn't have to rely on tinny euphemisms like 'contestable waves' to talk up their press. That's because for five straight days the righthander at Ballito pumped like crazy. If every right in South Africa gets compared to J'Bay then this was a heavier, bowlier, shorter-but-more-intense version of its famous brother.

Freak of the Reef

O'Neill Freak of the Reef.

An ordinary name for a surf comp if you ask me, not helped by the fact that it doesn't really rhyme. Why not Chief of the Reef, I ask you. Hmmm...? Anyway, the O'Neill Freak of the Reef recently went down at Sumbawa's Scar Reef and Yo Yo's.

Another technicality: they surfed on two reefs so it should actually be called the Freak of the Reefs. Plural.

At the conclusion of the ill-named festiviites Balinese surfer Raditya Rondi was crowned Freak of the singular Reef besting country man Pepen Hendrik.

161 Stitches

The following short story and accompanying photos somehow slipped through our inbox last year. Its resurrection is timely with the Indo season in full swing. Word of warning: if you've got a weak stomach don't flick to the end.

161 stitches: that's the amount you need if you smack your head on the reef at Macaronis...hard!!

Riley Laing: Four feet high and rising

The old adage about kids growing up wanting to be firemen has been turned on its head. At least on the NSW Central Coast.

These shots are taken by Jughead Allport, Central Coast firemen and the first fella in line when his local reefs are firing. Who is his hero? Who does he look up to?

Glorious Cape

Jeremy says that he'll be donating money "for every foot of wave I surf", which is one heck of a mission. If you'd like to help out Jeremy, check his Everyday Hero profile here.

Sun Studios

Peter Perreaux recently had his own private photo studio on the Sunshine Coast. For almost a week an out of season east swell provided a sustained run of perfect surf, and yet ironically there wasn't much sun at the time! Never mind, the waves were the subjects and Peter fattened his portfolio of gorgeous surf imagery.

Keep your nose clean and rails dry

On Thursday a crew of young Australian (and a lone Italian) kept out of trouble and out of the water during an air session on the far north coast of NSW. The cast in order of appearance are Coby Perkovich, Leonardo Fioravanti, Mikey Wright, Mitch Parkinson, and Tyler Wright who threw it up there for the ladies.

All photos Ryan (RYZphoto) Williams. Check his page here, it's worth your while.
