Western Gold Rush

Nothing to do with riches in the arid north of WA. Perth surfers recently had a few beachbreak bowls to play amongst and yet the shortest day of the year was upon them. With light running low Luke Campbell and co rushed through the moves as the golden light waned.

Chasing the tail of a swell

After a week of non stop waves things have slowly ground to a halt on the Sunshine Coast. On Monday, with a return to winter flatness beckoning, Jack Dekort raced around his local haunts chasing the tail of a memorable but rapidly diminishing swell. This is what he caught.

Pitstop Hill - May As Well

April had been such a good month of waves out here in the Northern Mentawais, that it was no wonder May got off to a bit of a slow start - it had a hard act to follow. But a week in, May dusted off its stage-fright and figured it might as well have a crack. And weʼre glad it did.

Jack Irvin: South of Heaven, North of the Harbour

Over the bridge and into some thick ones...

Cronulla lad, Jack Irvin, makes the commute worthwhile with some seriously thick pits at an undisclosed beach north of Sydney. His only company five boogers to share the booty. Although it's only breaking over sand there was plenty at stake had Jack snapped his stick.

And no, there ain't no way we're running a Slayer board spray in black and white.

Quiksilver Open West Java

Lee Wilson put on an impressive display of competitive surfing at Cimaja Beach yesterday to win the Quiksilver Open West Java final over fellow Bali surfer Mustofa Jeksen. Wilson took to the air and used his full repertoire of progressive surfing maneuvers to score a 9.5 on his first wave. When the horn blew the end of the final, Wilson's combined score was 17 points to Jeksen's 10.2. Wilson was last year's Quiksilver Best West Java event winner as well, which makes him a two-time champ at Cimaja.

The One Step Program

It ain't quite as harrowing as the Shippies Step but the proximity to dry rock gives the Solander Step its own fear factor. Blow it here and you're grating cheese.

Last Friday Perth Standlick spread his wings as he cleared the step then regathered and set his rail into a fun-sized barrel. At the same time photographer, Charlie Straumeitis, lost focus as Perth was in the pit ('Damn spectators') but regathered to capture Perth hitting the channel.

And that GoPro camera attached to Perth's front leg? "Came out rubbish," said the young bloke from Bondi. "Camera fogged up."

Cape Reverb

When the Cape breaks there's two things you can be assured of. One, there'll be an audience, half of them holding industrial-sized lenses, and two, said lenses will take many photos, swamping the 'net with images.

So if you've already seen enough action from last weeks Cape Solander sessions I apologise...

But anyway, here's yet more of the action, this time featuring Caleb McLean, Mouse, Perth, Jess Pollock, Ignacio Salazar and one or two fellas we don't recognise.

Mikey & Mooney

Mikey Brennan (green westuit) and Andrew Mooney (maroon westuit) have been towing together lately. Their latest go out being Cape Solander during last weeks east/north-east swell in Sydney. While hardly the ideal swell direction for the cape it made for some short, intense pits.

Recently Mikey left his Hobart home to settle in Bondi so expect to see more shots of the duo whenever it's pumping.

The Best Barrels From Arica

World Tour followers will remember Arica from the 2007 Rip Curl Search (won by the late Andy Irons). The small Chilean town recently hosted the ASP 3-Star Maui & Sons World Star competition and Anthony Walsh of Australia (via Hawaii) prevailed in the perfect 4 to 6 foot barrels. Here are the best shots from the comp.

Cavemen of the Central Coast

Photographer Grant Molony shines his miners light on the cavemen of the Central Coast. Shane Holmes and Jeremy make the righthander their home whilst Phil Coote plays solo - and styling! - hermit on the left.

PS: That's the Central Coast of NSW, for all the exacting geographers out there.
