Noosa Both Ways

It usually happens right about now, whilst typing text for one of Jack Dekort's Sunshine Coast galleries, that the urge to lay down a few puns or silly rhymes gets uncontrollable. I'm a man of little willpower. But today I'll spare you, the waves the Sunny Coast has been receiving speak for themselves.

Noosa absolutely pumping.

Utter Speed

By now you should all know Kirra has been a revelation the past week. The old beauty has been breaking the best it has since last century with blistering speed runs off the top of Big Groyne. And here's to hoping she's back for good.

On Wednesday photographer Grant Davis tweaked his shutter speed to eye-watering effect, capturing the utter speed of Kirra.

Below The Waterline

There's not a surfboard to be seen in this gallery nor a wave being ridden either. Yet it's no oversight and we make no apology for running them. Willem Ungermann takes us below the waterline and inside the wave in a series of beautifully evocative photographs.

Dead On Arrival

Last week's oversized East Coast Low left few options for surfers in Sydney and surrounding areas. Such was the size and period of the swell that rarely seen bommies were breaking well offshore mitigating wave energy before it came inshore. It was just too wild and raw for many of the usual breaks.

One of the places handling it was Deadmans on Sydney's Northern Beaches. Owing to the extremely deep water off Sydney Harbour and North Head the swell was hitting Deadies unaffected and with the full force of the low.

Bombs & Bommies

More action from last week's East Coast Low...

Although the next swell is upon us and everywhere from Noosa to Narooma is pumping we couldn't pass over these shots from Matt Dunbar. They were taken at a bommie on the NSW South Coast where the oversized swell was draining the reef and causing sudden sea level adjustments. The gaping grey hole testament to the violence of the wave.

Mac & Lizzy

Mac & Lizzy: a fine partnership, especially when the pair combine with a head-high swell and a bevy of hot locals.

Don't Say Kirra Is Back

Don't say Kirra is back, there's been too many false starts. Twenty metre speed runs caught on film and uploaded to YouTube, the images belying the 1:100 success ratio. Still images underneath headlines proclaiming her return as the outer bank - the bane of modern Kirra - is kept conveniently out of frame.

Don't say Kirra is back, because the powers that be will believe you and spend no more on improvements. Each time the words are uttered they're relayed to Gold Coast City Council who believe no further work is needed. The Bring Back Kirra crew stymied by the claim.

Volcom Fiji Pro Finals Day

18.57, 19.50 and 18.16.

The numbers don't lie, Kelly Slater's last three heat scores in the Volcom Fiji Pro are testamant to his dominance today. His semi final performance was verging on absurd and if you didn't watch it live then you should get yourself over to heats on demand to see an old dog pulling new tricks.

Volcom Fiji Pro Round 5 & Quarters

Here's hoping the old adage that a picture tells a thousand words is true cos I've got no words to write about today's competition. Didn't watch a second of it. Long weekend holiday, you see. It's pretty small where I am. Cold and wet too. Looks much better in these photos. The end.

Volcom Fiji Pro Rounds 3 & 4

With a shift in wind the organisers of the Volcom Fiji Pro took the competition to Restaurants for Rounds 3 & 4. In stark contrast to yesterdays moving mountains today offered up relative molehills. Albeit, four foot and hollow molehills. Yeah, stupid analogy...

Anyway, it was smaller, it was perfect, and three 10 point rides were scored. For full details click here.

Mentawai Magic

Last entry in the diary from the MV Aileoita 1: "But the best day of the swell was still to come and we moved to Green Bush. The waves were perfect, some mental barrels were ridden and many boards where broken too. The biggest set of the day was the most expensive one, three waves and three boards snapped!

That was the best way to finish a trip: sick waves, sick barrels, and many photos to take back home!"
