Nikon Surf Photo of the Year - Finalists

Nikon Surf Photo of the Year

The Australian Surfing Awards are being held next Wednesday night and a popular feature of the night will be the Nikon Surf Photo of the Year. The Nikon Surf Photo of the Year showcases the finest work taken by Australia's best surf photographers during the past 12 months.

The judging panel includes 15 members of the surfing community including competitor, industry and media representatives. These are the finalists.

Josh Ku is a Sydney surfer more known for his barrel antics at places such as Cape Solander and various ledges on the NSW South Coast. Not one to fall into stereotype Josh recently returned from Taiwan where he found plenty of great waves and a bustling little surf scene.

Sunny Coast All Over

Once the rain cleared it was all cicadas and bottle green foliage on the Sunshine Coast. And surf, there was plenty of surf too.

Jack Dekort did the Sunny Coast rounds in the wake of the Cyclone Oswald event and found waves a'plenty with surfers to match: Julian Wilson, Harry Bryant, Dane Peterson, amongst others.

Cronulla

As we've said elsewhere on Swellnet, not everywhere pumped during the last round of east and sou-east swells on the East Coast. Lotta people put in the effort yet came up empty-handed. The Cronulla reefs are ususally dependable and once again they didn't disappoint. Long as you were prepared to hold out for the tide, jump when the window of good winds opened, and then, most importantly, face off the rock ledge, you could get yourself in the mix.

Warm, blue water; front lit mornings; back lit arvos: the Mexican coastline offers a lot for a Victorian-based photographer used to dull hues and grey water. Gary Parker is travelling the world with his girlfriend and after a few months in Hawaii they've been traipsing the Mexican coastline enjoying conditions that contrast so much with their homeland.

The Fish Fry Masterchef

The 7th annual Alley Fish Fry is just over two weeks away and the kitchen is heating up. Recently, during the Australia Day long weekend, a tempest of Biblical proportions hit the Gold Coast forcing crew indoors and out of the surf. People moaned. People groaned. Not Grant Newby, Head Chef of the Alley Fish Fry, he strode into the kitchen (his fitted out garage) and started working on some new creations.

The worst kept secret in surfing is now official: Keramas will become the fifth stop on the 2013 World Championship Tour. The black sand beach on Bali's east side is known as a consistent, high-performance wave with plenty of ramps and pockets creating ample opportunities for the world's best to cut loose. For the last four years Oakley has held the World Pro Juniors at Keramas with 2013 being the first year as WCT status.

The following photos are a selection from the last two Oakley Pro Juniors, won by Davey Cathels in 2011 and Jack Freestone on 2012.

The 2013 Volcom Pipe Pro began with 124 warriors going to battle at the fabled Banzai Pipeline yet by late yesterday afternoon, only four men were left standing. John John Florence, Chris Ward, Josh Kerr, and Olamana Eleogram had fought their way into the championship round. A valiant effort was made by all but as the last seconds of the final heat ticked down Oahu's North Shore erupted with excitement and for the third year in a row John John Florence was chaired up the beach and crowned the victor of the Volcom Pipe Pro.

It was just after daybreak this morning when the 2013 Volcom Pipe Pro was called on for the second day in a row and soon the round of 96 was back underway with contestants facing risky and turbulent conditions. As the day went on conditions improved, the scores got higher, and heading into the round of 64 pipe really turned on.

As the day went on conditions improved, the scores got higher, and heading into the round of 64 pipe really turned on.

Noosa Heads

Noosa Heads - it's the first place to feel a new north-east swell and it's ridable under all but the most extreme and persistent northerly storms.

Unfortunately that's just what the storm associated with ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald was. All long weekend the surf was huge but ripped apart by a rogue northely wind. On Tuesday and Wednesday it started to settle though the wind still wasn't ideal for classic Noosa. The conditions were, however, ideal for punting and Wade Goodall, Julian Wilson, Jake Colreavy and co boosted into the wind.
