Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach: Mens Layday photos

While the eyes of the webcast world were on Bells and the opening round of the Women's, arguably the better action was happening at Winki with the Pop's long running walls favouring the small swell and high tide.

Ed Sloane picked a possie and parked his arse on the rocks - this is what he saw.

Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach: Layday photos

The organisers of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach have called a layday, just as they did yesterday. And just as they did yesterday the surfers will hit the road looking for waves.

Here's what some of the pros - Simpo, Courtney Conlogue (pulling a tidy air in shot 3), Melling and Zietz - found in their search.

Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach: Pre-event photos

"It was a weird in-between-size kinda day at Bells," said photographer Ed Sloane, "clean early then light onshore for the rest of the day. Oney Anwar (shot 1) was looking good as was Michel and Taj."

"Michel's turn in the black and white image (shot 3) was pretty insane but he didn't make it. It's hard to grasp the speed at which he was moving across that face."

Pro surfing punters should also note Gabs Medina getting his ankle treated in shot 4, but also the backhand blast by Medina in the next image.

Further Than The Sun

It's been a couple of weeks since Cyclone Sandra served up her joyous bounty. Spinning slowly in the Coral Sea the main beneficiaries of Sandra were surfers north of the Queensland border - we've all seen the photos of Kirra and Noosa.

In an effort to escape the crowds Kane Brown and his mates headed further north beyond the Sunshine Coast. Their effort was well-rewarded.

Drug Aware Pro Margaret River: Day 2 Photos

Hard to avoid the cliches when describing the events at the Margaret River Pro yesterday, so let's tick 'em off: big swell, surfers rising to the occasion, action packed, drama a'plenty...have I missed any?

Still, it was good webcast watching, what with the big swell and surfers rising to the occasion and all.

Wanna read a straight report on the day? Will Hayden-Smith at the ASP is your man.

Sporadic Slabs

The places that break under a long period east swell! In Sydney alone there are many mysto slabs that lay dormant for months and years never getting tangled up in short interval waves. When the period streches out and the energy runs deeper - as it did on the East Coast last Saturday - these rarely seen waves roar to life.

Jordan Barta caught Josh Ku, Brett Black, Luke Kennedy and Judd Atkins running the gauntlet at this infrequent treat.

Noosa Heads

What a week it's been up Noosa way. A persistent trade wind swell gave way to lines from Tropical Cyclone Sandra all while the Noosa Festival of Surfing was underway. I think Swellnet's Noosa reporter would be a very happy chap right about now. Onya Phil!

Cronulla

As Tropical Cyclone Sandra's forerunners made landfall Friday afternoon Charlie Straumeitis shot the action at Cronulla. It marked the beginning of a very good weekend of surf in Sydney.

Pitstop Hill - February Report

The media spotlights have been switched off, the fans were lured away by the Hawaiian winterʼs battle for the world title and the Mentawai stadium has been practically empty for months.

But thereʼs still a buzz here. Despite difficult low pressure systems pounding the region with rain and persistent NW winds, reports from friends who stayed behind over the December and January period say it was empty and pumping. As it turns out, some of the Mentawaiʼs key players have been training hard in the shadows all off-season.

Northern Reprieve

With the Coral Sea in an active state all eyes have been trained on the Queensland points. In Coolangatta it's contest singlets, cameras, and serious competition with the Quiksilver Pro heading into its final day. Further north, however, things have been moving at a slightly more leisurely pace. Yeah, the Noosa points have been crowded, and yeah, the Noosa Festival of Surfing has brought many hot surfers into town, but the vibe is a few notches below that down at Cooly - it always is
