The March long weekend in Tassie is when the state's premier surfing event takes place. With around 140 competitors taking part it's our biggest event on the surfing calender and now in its 34th year.

This summer will certainly go down as one of the more memorable periods of waves for Western Australia. Not because of the consistent Southern Ocean swells that fan across the lower southwest with each passing frontal system, but because of a series of rare cyclone swells originating from the northwest.

On Tuesday, Elouera Boardriders Club stalwart, Tommy Tyler (orange rails), and longtime Cronulla local, Gerry Manion (green rails), got stuck into a playful righthander at Wanda.

not only did we scored hundreds of barrels, but we also surfed numerous days by oursleves, without any boat or fancy resort in sight! It takes a little bit of strategy and knowledge of the place to escape the crowds in the Mentawai. We scored perfect head to head high plus barrels to ourselves for three days straight. No other boats around, nobody in the water exept us...sunny weather, crystal clear water, and A+ barrels for us only! Some of our guests caught the barrel of their lives so we're definitely heading back to the Mentawai next season! In the meantime, enjoy the photos from our trip of last year. See you around! In a red letter day for Womens pro surfing, 18-year-old Carissa Moore took the Roxy Pro title from rookie Tyler Wright.

On Saturday afternoon the forerunners to Sunday's predicted swell started running down the Snapper sandbank. Only a few heats were surfed, one by World Champ Steph Gilmore, against wildcard, Sarah Mason, of New Zealand.

No surf trip to New Zealand is complete without a visit to Raglan.

Ain't nothing like that new board feeling. Not great news when you have two weeks of waves ahead of you. Then my mate Ryan 'Wanga' Waine, big-wave charger from the Central Coast of NSW, destroyed my third board in the boat by stepping on it and pushing his fins through my last board. I nursed the board off the bottom trying to feel my way into it but I think Kong had probably surfed so many tubes on the board that it knew what to do. I took care of this board like a newborn baby for the rest of my trip.

It was only so many years ago that a troupe of pros surfers were violently evicted from the west coast of South Australia. For many years following that incident sponsor stickers and cameras were guaranteed to raise the ire of locals. The other surfers are Sam Jervis, owner of EP Surfshop in Port Lincoln, and local ripper, Pete Tomlinson.
