Starting Point Cronulla

The East Coast, Australia's most populous coastline, has just been hit by an unrelenting, mid-range E/NE swell providing 1001 surf stories to those who got amongst it. So, where to start the storytelling? Hows about Cronulla Point? It's urban, central, and it was a barrelling. Seems as good a point to start as any...

Green Eyed Monsters Pt. 1

OK, by now y'all know Cape Solander has been the place to be the last two days - no point me telling you that. Allow me to give you a quick rundown on these shots though. They were taken by Darryl Menzies after lunch yesterday, Mark Matthews, Hippo, Dan Ross and Dom Wills all make an appearance, as do various locals.

We'll have plenty more images in the coming days.

Occupy Sydney

It's been a long time between swells for Sydney surfers. On Saturday morning a long period south swell struck the coast and weekend warriors combined with wave-starved surfers to ensure everywhere open to the south was fully occupied. This reef break - one of the shallower and heavier ones around - even hosted a keen SUP who jagged a few of the sets. The times they are a'changin'.

Sand and Cement

Recently Swellnet ran an interview with Andrew Pitt, the co-ordinator of Cronulla's forthcoming 'sand slug'. The sand slug will be created when dredged sand is dumped in a small area 250 metres offshore from The Wall at Cronulla. If all goes to plan the slug will work like a bombora, refracting swells that pass over it and causing peaks to break shoreward of it.

Ox vs. Shark

It's a titanic struggle for supremacy, of a sort. Greg 'Ox' McKinley wrestles this Shark Island beast to the channel where he taps it out, shoulders hung low, before heading back out for another round. Documented by Darryl Menzies.

On a Wingnut and a Prayer

Ballard charges the Nulla reefs stand up but saves the lid for when the Island is pumping. Wingnut, who had his own signature bodyboard back in the day, now rides stand up and today he had a crack at the Island on it.
