Yesterday we ran photos of the huge swell that hit WA two weeks ago. In the accompanying text I mentioned how the swell dropped dramatically through the afternoon, the implication being that, due to it's short-lived nature, it was a disappointing swell. Two weeks ago West Oz was hit by the biggest swell of the autumn season. Yet as far as great swells go this one was a very short lived affair - by the afternoon it had dropped to just 4-5 feet. It may not even stack up as a one-day wonder but it doesn't detract from an epic WA morning. Last week we ran a sequence of Ox McKinley (so called cos he's as big as an Ox and just as smart) charging the end section at Shark Island.

Yet while all that madness was happening the really death defying surfing was occurring across the bay at Tassie's small wave locations. After all, the best way to defy death is by not driving around to Shippies and taking on the ledge.

Awards were presented to the winner of each of these categories: - Raddest move- Most stoked- Best overall performance- Board art- Loudest Yeeeew Loudest yeeewww?? On that note, the day was a roaring success with the best swell in weeks dishing up ideal conditions for the array of surfcraft being ridden. Gary Parker watched it all from behind the lens. For the last six weeks there's been swell in abundance, and from Gnaraloo to Noosa no surfer has gone without.  Last week it was SE QLD's turn and Sam Norwood was there to feel the love. All photos by Sam.

Yesterday, the East Coast was hit by a long-period south swell that combined with bluebird conditions. Darryl 'Boogs' Vandepolder (on the green board) hit the open road and managed to score a pair of great barrels at a rarely surfed reef. Photos by Craig Brokensha.

During yesterday's East Coast swell the Storm Surfers team - including Tom Carroll and Ross Clarke-Jones - travelled south to an isolated bombora.

It's a titanic struggle for supremacy, of a sort. Greg 'Ox' McKinley wrestles this Shark Island beast to the channel where he taps it out, shoulders hung low, before heading back out for another round. Documented by Darryl Menzies.

We've got a bit of an animal theme going today with an Ox, a Shark, and now a charging Hippo.  In this sequence, Ryan Hipwood stampedes from well behind the section on an east coast reef and makes a clean exit to safety. James Raper shot the wave from a safe distance.

He knows the wave as well as anyone and has got into the Quiksilver Pro, by way of winning or placing in the trials, three times. Two weeks of fun-sized waves matched with great weather has seen local surfers getting their fill before the winter hibernation begins. All photos by Jack Dekort.

For the last two weeks it's been consistently head high or larger with clear weather and offshore winds. Due to the amount of waves the photos have been pouring in, however I'm running out of puns when it comes to referencing the Sunshine Coast.

Today Stab.com ran a short interview with Slater and questioned him about the move: was it the biggest Alley Oop he's ever pulled? "I did one at Bells" he said, "in the expression session that I haven't seen on video, but it felt just as high and I landed cleaner." This is the sequence of that move.

He is, as always, emphatically low-key yet remains an inspiration to surfers everywhere. Not least of those is Karl Bromelow who took these shots near Bells Beach during the Rip Curl competition. When the comp was over Karl drove home to the Mornington Peninsula where it was quieter and he could surf alone.

Chris Old is not being very productive at work today and he has good reason. These shots were taken at 9am just before he clocked on to work this morning.

Time to cast your eyes north, think of warmer climes, while yearning for the best that Indonesia has to offer: Bintangs and Gudangs. Suck 'em up, knock 'em down. Nick McMurray and mates managed to squeeze in the odd session between the durries and beer. 

When a good sized swell coincides with the weekend, crowds amass on the coast and battle each other to try and fill their quota.
