Betwixt Tassie and the Tropics

Ain't nothing like a holiday to a far away land, somewhere that contrasts deeply with home to jolt you out of the daily grind. Tasmanian photographer, Nigel Eberhardt, knows such a place and escapes there when the need arises. Stuffed deep within the tropics where the air is thick and water blue it's as far removed as could be imagined from home.

Nigel has also included a selection of Tasmanian shots. Take away the rubber, replace the eucalypts with palm trees and they're not that different from his tropical retreat.

All photos by Nigel.

Around the Grounds: Part 5 Tasmania

Tassie surfers didn't miss out on the sweet stuff during Easter as Nigel Eberhardt proves with these images. Many of the states best surfers were chasing waves elsewhere so a small crew of locals had these punchy slabs all to themselves. Not sure if that's a good thing or not...

Tasmanian Surf and Surrounds

By his own admission Tasmanian photographer, Nigel Eberhardt, has been getting skunked for waves lately. It's all relative though - at least judging by these photos - average waves in Tasmania still top the quality in most other parts of the country. And when the conditions are truly dire there's always the stunning landscapes to admire.

Santosha of the South Pacific

In 1974 the film The Forgotten Island of Santosha played to surfers in the USA and Australia. 'Santosha' was a supposedly mythical island where perfect, empty waves reeled off under warm sunny skies. Viewers were encouraged to seek their own version of it. The island was, however, Mauritius, located in the western Indian Ocean. The filmmakers created the moniker to protect the location.

Labouring In The West

The March long weekend in Tassie is when the state's premier surfing event takes place. With around 140 competitors taking part it's our biggest event on the surfing calender and now in its 34th year.

Far From the Maddening Crowd

Nigel Eberhardt and mates got lost in the wilderness recently, hundreds of clicks from the nearest Post Office and even further to the nearest internet exchange. So isolated were they that a city boy like me finds the photos just a wee bit disturbing.

Eye on the Apple Isle

Better than any tourist brochure, these photos of Tassie will leave all surfers salivating. That leaves, oh...about 1500 k's of jagged coast to find these waves. Good luck... All photos by Nigel Eberhardt.//STUART NETTLE
