Watch: Jack Robinson Raw

It was often said that Taj Burrow was the best surfer never to win a world title. Could Jack Robinson be the best surfer never to make the CT?

The 21-year old West Australian has plenty of years left to qualify, however despite his undeniable talent and the occasional big win he's never got close. In fact, his 39th place last year was the first time he'd cracked the top 50.

This year he got off to a great start, coming second in the Sunset Open and winning the Volcom Pipe Pro, which follows a regular pattern of great Hawaiian results and shitty everywhere else. Which makes you think that if he can crack it, and put the small-wave QS quagmire behind him then a long CT career beckons.

Unfortunately the slide has already begun this year, with a meagre 25th place at the US Open, Jack dropped down to 17th on the rankings and he's starting to lose sight of the peloton. Nothing a solid Hawaiian showing cant bridge.

Meanwhile, here's Jack in red hot form showing us what he can do outside of the competition singlet.

2nd at Sunset and wins Pipe and it's worth less than a quarter final at Huntington.
Everything that's wrong with the 'QS right there.

What about his results at Marg's. Does that improve his lot at all?

That was at a CT, so unless he gets numerous wildcards - the way Mikey Wright did in 2017 - then he's well off the Top 22 (which qualify for the next year).

Waves are too good in WA: he needs to follow the gravy train to Byron Bay; buy a fedora, get a tattoo, grovel, then grovel some more. Then, and only then will he be ready to be a true hero.

Ok so there’s no way a guy can surf that well and have good results at a place like sunset without being able to turn ......BUT........with this clip being no exception why is there not a single turn being put into these edits? Seems really strange, chink in the armour? Surely not

NP, Box and MW’s aren’t really conducive to turns. If you’re turning then you’re not doing it right!

JJF was doing some of the best turns ever done at Margaret Wiver a couple of years ago

Fair call on those waves but the bloke could put out anything he wants and it never includes turns. As someone mentioned John turns at Margs.

Yeah is a bit weird that he doesn't have some mega hacks as people like Mick, Joel, Julian, etc...had when they were on their way up, and they were also awesome tube riders.

Nah memla, you’re being a bit harsh. Why does he need to have a big hack?
He’s been one of the worlds best tube riders in waves of consequence since he was a teenager. Mick, Joel and Julian weren’t half as good at their age. The kids an absolute freak.

In this day and age does he really need to be a "contest surfer" anyway? Haven't seen the "free surfers" such as Rasta, Torreyn, Craig A for example in any contests that I can recall. Not that I take much notice of contests so grain of salt and all.
Hopefully he is able to continue making clips and travelling while being fully supported by the surf corporations.

Check the footage of Chopes and Toomies ... just as impressive. The article did say he won Pipe.

What’s with the idea behind releasing something for 48hrs the removing?

Was disappointing to see Ciao & Fredrico get the injury wildcards for chopes.
Thought Jack would be a shoe in with Matahi. If Tahiti gets swell this year the Wossle has made a colossal fuck up.

Fairly sure he got a spot in the trials with Nathan Florence and a few others. Agree with ya though,
