Watch: Clay Marzo // Jesus Stance

It's the welcome return of the goofy savant dressed as usual - no westuit, knee-length boardies - telegraphing his way down the line of a hollow left. This time back in Maui and the wave is far less predictable than anything you'd find around Kalbarri, yet Clay still reads the play two steps before it happens.

Mmmmm.

You don’t see much footage of Clay from WA anymore. Wonder why that could be ......

I'm sensing a story there??? I assumed he no longer lived there.

As for the clip. Amazing style, but jeeez what a repetitive few minutes.

Aahhh man I love his surfing. Something other worldly about his take off to tube sequence. Like he is part of the wave and not on it. Just brilliant.

Drop his name next time you're in Kalbarri. You'll get the mail pretty quickly.

Well reading between the lines he picked up a locals daughter and dumped her a little while later, maybe I'm miles off the reality.

I can't imagine he was able to travel much after losing his big sponsors and having his bookkeeper steal 400k from him. He was $30k in debt when she was finished with him and his mother. Don't know anything about him not being allowed to surf here.

Kinda like Margo in reverse.....maybe? Sure looks like a solid, sure footed surfer but I think Margo is better on the rail with his massive man hacks but less so on the progressive side of things vs Clay. Bring back Margo I say!

Something bizarre about the clipped article;

It has a date of 1987 so Clay must have made a great impression as a (2?) year old.
But 5 minutes of him is equal to about 3 WSL circuses. He just rides waves with a freedom we can only envy.

Haven't seen a goofy footer that good/in tune/as stylish/dancing with the rhythm, since Brett Evans back in 1973 when Brett came back from the world trip with Father Bob after filming Drouyn. He was inspirational. This guy is on a high level! Liked his surfing a lot!

Had the privilege of watching him surf a clean, flawless and frightening 8m swell at Kalbarri a few years ago. Carpark was packed and only one guy out and a jet ski. "Who is that guy" I asked a local bloke. Marzo! Amazing surfer, pulling into tubes that you could have parked a bus in. He was so deep, so relaxed, wearing a pair of board shorts, and standing tall with his hands behind his back. Never forget it. The most incredible waves met with equally incredible surfing...
