"A couple of years ago the general lines were relatively safe and boring, and now you're getting guys pulling into fifty foot barrels," says Andrew Cotton about the performance spike at Nazare, which he attributes to the network of safety specialists including PWC pilot Sérgio Cosme. "The second you go for a wave, you're in it, you're committed. There is no safe zone."

Having the PWC rescuers on hand at Nazare is akin to wearing a parachute: the surfers can leap into the abyss knowing they're relatively safe.

This ten-minute clip from Red Bull highlights the unsung role of Sérgio, and also features interviews from Nick von Rupp, world record holder Rodrigo Koxa, and Andrew Cotton. Plus lots of borderline rescues from the Nazare impact zone.

I love Sergio. Yes he's more interested in saving people than himself.
He's had more hours in the water at Nazare than anyone. I know that for a fact.

That was really good. Nice focus on others, helping & empowering others.

And of course the footage! Shoutout to the Portugese & their descendants in Brazil and elsewhere, they are doing for XXL big wave riding what Vasco Da Gama did for oceanic exploration.

My guess is he's sponsored by Red Bull. Red Bull, it's amazing how much money they pump into surfing. Who even drinks that shit anyway?
