Watch: Eloy from the air

At the risk of overkill, here's yet one more video of the Ulu tow crew - who for all the fuss only caught four waves.

'Twas a fine feat by Eloy and Andrei but in this vid drone pilot Paul Flagg of Margaret River Productions deserves some props for getting down to wave height and into Eloy's grill.

I don't know much about tow board design, but in all this Ulus footage it looks to me like the boards could be longer, i.e. there's too much nursing a short rail.

What would be the downside to say a 7'2 narrow spear compared to these 6'0 (guessing) mini slippers?

I won't pretend I'm a big wave surfer, but I always thought the whole point of length on guns was to give you more length flotation (through volume) to get in to the wave earlier (e.g. more surface area)? By towing in, it negates the need for length, so you can add more curve and weight (for drive). I remember seeing somewhere the discussion of tow boards being as small as 5'11 - might've been Laird talking about the early days of towing.

EDIT: and by reducing the length, they improve their manoeuvrability in highly critical waves.

Me too - no big wave surfer - but it seems like the shorter board for manoeuvres is out in this situation cos they showed no interest in doing turns, and fair enough, but I reckon they should have thus used longer boards, might have made those sections??

Awesome but he should have stalled and done some floaters

Yeah I kept seeing those floater sections to, not sure why he didn't go for it. He could have done that fancy one foot step off thing to. I guess just leaving some room to ramp it up next swell!
