Off season swells in the Mentawais - video

Late December isn't a revered time of the year for the Mentawais - most crew book their trips through the midle of the year to coincide with the Southern Hemisphere winter. However, the Southern Indian Ocean is a bloody big basin that remains active all year 'round; we usually see a more easterly position of the storm track too, resulting in a more frequent southerly swell direction across the Indonesian archipelago.

And here's the evidence - Greenbush (just around the corner from Macaronis) on fire a few days before Xmas. If you're looking for a last-minute off-season jaunt, we have just a handful of spots left on our Macaronis Surf Coaching Clinic, with Clayton and Shayne Nienaber. Procrastinating as I often do, I've been looking at airfares to exotic locales - and plugged in the dates for the first week of the Macaronis Surf Coaching Clinic.

Lo and behold, I can get to Padang from the Gold Coast for just over $600 return (plus baggage). Evidence below.

Bugger me.. I might have to take up one of the last few spots on the list. Cheaper than flying back to Adelaide and filling the hire-car with diesel for a West Coast mission!

Gary would like to know what website you're using to do your flight-lurking there, Ben?

AirAsia.com direct (I usually go with Expedia for convenience, but I don't think they do AirAsia).
