Margaret River Pro's future uncertain as WSL enters negotiations

Margaret River's place on the World Surf League's Championship Tour may be in doubt as officials deliberate over the future of the tournament at one of Western Australia's most iconic breaks.

Aussie six-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore and reigning men's world champ John John Florence have voiced their support for the event, which is scheduled to begin today in Margaret River in WA's south west.

World Surf League commissioner Kieren Perrow said discussions were underway with local government, communities and Surfing WA, but a schedule for the 2018 season is yet to be finalised.

The Margaret River Pro is one of the few events on the international tour to offer three breaks to cater for varying conditions, a factor Gilmore considers to weigh heavily in its favour.

"This is a dream destination for surfers who love adventure, and to me this area really represents authentic Australia," Gilmore said.

"To see the World Surf League and local government commit to making the event as mobile as it is, I think that that's a really big point for everyone to stop and think, 'OK, this event should stay'.

Florence, who won the event in 2015, said he was supportive of the tour returning in 2018.

"It's definitely one of the events with the most variety of waves that allows us to surf in all conditions," he said.

"It's one of my favourite places to come to on the whole tour."

The Margaret River Pro is one of three event locations on the Australian leg of the tour, after Snapper Rocks in Queensland and Bells Beach in Victoria.

Locals say it provides a welcome boost to the local economy, which is largely seasonal and tourism-dependent, as well as the town's international profile.

Local business owner Helen Thompson said business owners in the town are worried about the uncertainty surrounding the event.

"Everybody's quite concerned that we'll lose it because although we've got a love-hate relationship with it, it does bring a lot of money to town and it's a really exciting event," Ms Thompson said.

"Not a lot goes on of this calibre in Margaret River, so I think it's a great thing to have. I'd be really disappointed if it didn't happen again."

Local surfboard shaper and repairer John Dutton said the annual event sees a sharp rise in business come into town, while also giving local surfers a chance to fraternise with the touring professionals.

"It's all systems go and you've got to be on hand 24 hours a day because you never know who will rock up wanting a board fixed for the next day," Mr Dutton said.

"One day it'll be Kelly Slater and the next it's John John Florence. It's good to see them because you see them on television and they seem like pretty nice guys and when they come in here you find out they actually are."

Haha! Classic Dutts.
It's a tricky one. If it loses ct status will it go back to qs? So instead of a big overhyped shitshow with 35 pros and their cling ons, we get a slightly less hyped shitshow with 200 pros and their cling ons? Any chance of just fucking it off altogether and running the local Classic at this time of year instead of the worst time?

Just run it in a Sydney wedge beach break! We need a high performace section in the AU's leg with lefts and rights with nice rampy sections so we can see hi fi surfing of goofys and nats ! Also it could run down the coast snapper Sydney bells! March always sees epic swells in NSW! We have a snap fest and snapper! Mostly a fat back in west AU's If were lucky box then big fat backs at Bella again! Now most kids buy vids for airs and massive blowtails and big close out drop wallets. This shit is done in 3-5ft wedge beach breaks that's were your mind is blown! West for Q's! Rub the wsl down the east with the swell run!

We don't go to Bells hoping to surf Johanna, we don't go to Snapper frothing on Dbah. We don't go to Pipe waiting for Ehukai to switch on and while Restaurants is a rad backup, Cloudbreak is really where it's at.

Margs is the only tour stop where everyone, surfers and fans, are praying the event is held anywhere but the main event site.

Um we do go to Bells hoping for Winki, and we do go to Snapper hoping for Kirra and yep North point or Box instead of main break.

And when we go to Brazil we just hope for anything that doesn't close out.

Um. Absolutely disagree we go to Bells hoping for Winki. Many more heats would be held at winki if that were the case, as it's actually more consistent. When the Bowl is in full flight, no one's wondering what we're missing elsewhere.

Similarly, Kirra is only ever used as a backup when Snapper isn't handling the conditions. Like Margs, Kirra (in its current state) is never the first choice, if there is a choice.

Simple solution is to "augment" the main break left with a couple million cubic metres of concrete and turn it into a decent wave. That or put the judges in a boat.

Most people who live in Gracetown (North Point) fucking hate the fact that it's there these days(on the list). One of the reasons the tax payers (Drug Aware) prop up the contest is they to promote "surf tourism",the crowds over here are unbelievable and getting worse.Spoke to the other surf shop owner in town and told me business for him doesn't change but when the concert was in conjunction with the contest it was better for him.I love to see good surfing but would like to see it somewhere else. This was an awesome place a few years ago,now it's pretty much"done"(crowds, bad tourism, attitude, exploited)

Tell you what I'm tired of hearing is that Margies is fat and boring, certainly wasn't boring watching today. Would have loved to see any of you fucktards that whinge about it being nothing more than a two turn wave out there today...tough guy keyboard warriors.
