Occy at Aloita
Andy Potts was the photographer/videographer during Occy's recent stay at Aloita Resort Mentawais care of The Perfect Wave. No doubt you've seen the photos appearing on Swellnet. Toward the end of the trip Andy switched to video and let his drone fly free, the result being this short clip. Yeah, the waves ain't too big but Occy still manages to tap the power.

got pulled. Apparently they are doing a remake of 'North Shore' so any current footage of Occy is the property of Warner Bros.
Back up now. It was all filmed at the end of the trip so the wave quality ain't much chop.

Never seen that boat before, but doesn't surprise me heard there was 44 charter boats operating out of Padang this year.
I think they only started last year. Underground surf charters. Half the price of most boats out there
I saw that boat in july this year while on the melaleuca. The American surf guide seemed like a great bloke. Probably in his 20s or early 30s. The boys on that boat nicknamed it the 'roach coach' haha. Obviously doesn't have the creature comforts of the other boats but who cares when your in the ments.
*I don't know if i'd like to do the overnight crossing in it from Padang if the swell/wind was up. It would be an experience that's for sure.
Haha yeah she's small ay. I felt ruff on the Padang run last year on the barrenjoey haha I got fuck all chance this time. The dudes who I've connected with on email seem like champions so there's part of the battle.

Yeah, load 'em up Timmeh. I know it'll be a kick in the guts - I heard about Bank Vaults while I was over there and could barely listen to it - but wouldn't mind seeing the size.

Hey Timmeh,
We had to abandon the crossing on Sunday after being swamped by a few waves getting out of the harbour at Padang. Water everywhere, alarms going off, the whole Indo emergency. Once we bailed the water out and settled everybody we had to figure what we were gonna do. I was sitting there with a 7’0” Banksy thinking “C’mon, lets take it on. It’s only 100 kilometres.” But I was outvoted. We headed down the coast, found safe harbour, then sat out the day at a bar, me moping about thinking I should be at macking Telescopes right now. Then the news came in; the boat we were in cracked its hull when hit by the waves at Padang. It was taking on water. If we had pressed on into the swell we would’ve almost certainly sunk in the Mentawai Strait. Didn’t mind missing the waves after hearing that.
Monday we surfed Suicides (Arik's), a sheltered but fricken shallow wave near the resort. Here's a few waves from my session.

Here's two frames from the swell. This was Monday 15th. First Frame is of Phil Carson at Bombie from Perth at approx 2pm, second one approx 6pm Outside corner. The wind was a direct Southerly from lunchtime with a semi-glass off in the arvo. I would think the swell peaking Saturday arvo in WA and then maybe early Monday for Indo. Maybe someone has some info on travel times with these long period 18 second swells. Certainly was a hoax swell with regard to being XL (ie I think because most models were combining the swells.), I called it 6-8 foot. Though seen a few photos of some bombs in WA but few and far between.

Actually I think I saw you at Suicides later that Monday arvo. I surfed up the reef a bit further towards Ombak Tijour and got a couple.
Looked burly to me uplift. Gotta love Aussie blokes like beau emerton and occ. Nail a dozen schooners and still tear the bag saaaaaaa.

Don't have a photo of the flogging I got as our guide was surfing with us not taking photos. It was a nugget that a mate called me into late on the Sunday arv. Didn't get another wave that session just sat out the back trying to get a feel for the place! Drank half a bottle of capt morgans that night to try and psych myself to try again Monday morning!!!

Yeah Indodreaming thats Bankvaults. After the morning session there we headed to Ariks for the afternoon. I saw that little yellow boat Stu and Occ were on right at the end of the wave nearly get cleaned up by a set!

I vowed never to hop on a boat with Occ after that incident at Suicides. In two days I had two close calls with boats being swamped or hit by waves.
...and great photos too Timmeh. It kinda gnaws at my guts knowing what we missed, but hey, I'm happy for you.

Hey Stu, yeah I was on one of those ones that cleaned your boat up. I didn't figure out it was you guys until I was back on our boat. The swell peaked on the Sunday arvo freeride, prob a few feet bigger on the sets, those photos are from early Monday morning. Put it this way I got too contemplate the meaning of life thoroughly as I was going over the falls on my first one Sunday arvo. It was howling offshore (Northerly at Bankvaults) which didn't help things!
