Is surfing a sport or a spiritual practice?

poster_546.jpgIt's no secret to surfers that the ritual of paddling out into the ocean, becoming one with mother nature's powerful, unpredictable yet nurturing forces, is a drug like no other.

It's a practice that requires only you and your board. So simple. But the rewards are great, offering physical and spiritual highs, mental clarity and an internal calm that can be carried back up on to dry land as you move through your day, sprinkling particles of ocean magic unassumingly in your wake.

But how often do you get the chance to connect with a tribe of surfers, to explore where the highs come from, your relationship with the ocean, and why the pull of surfing is so strong, no matter how hard you've been pummelled? Whether you think of it as a sport... an art form... or a spiritual practice... surfing is magnetic, always calling you back for more.

At 3pm on Sunday 23 February, a tribe of surfers are gathering at St Patrick's Castle, at North Head in Manly to do just that.

At this once in a lifetime event you will experience:

  • Soul Surfing Legend and Director of Morning of the Earth AND Spirit of Akasha, Albe Falzon
  • Spirit of Akasha surfer, Kye Fitzgerald
  • Spirit of Akasha Surfer, Longboarding World Champion and Musician, Beau Young
  • Full screening of the recently released Spirit of Akasha

It's probably all those things to different people, however with the increasing crowds in the water, there's no doubt that it's harder to treat it as a spiritual pursuit or art form as most surfs seem to manifest into a competitive sport to get waves.
