Future Moves

Way back in 1988 Waves magazine ran a story called 'Future Moves: Manouvres of the 21st Century'. The article was written by then national level surf coach Terry McKenna. In it, Terry put on his futurist cap and made some bold predictions about moves he thought were likely to be popularised in the coming millenium.

22 years later - and ten years into the 21st century - I thought it high time to revisit that article. Terry is now part of the Swellnet team and considering the Boost Mobile SurfSho begins tomorrow - a competition that encourages future moves - I asked Terry to look back at that article and also to, once again, look forward.

In the 'Future Moves' article you predicted the McTwist, the loop, lip blasts, and multiple spin would be the surfing moves of the future: what do you make of your predictions now? Close to the mark I guess. McTwists [backside 540's] are almost a variation on a rodeo clown, multi-spins in the air are possible, lip blasts are already old school and loops are being done by the Brazilian kids like Andre Jadson. Its exciting times right now in the surfing world. In reality I think that they are doing better now than I could have ever envisaged in 1988...

So surfing has progressed further than you expected? Yeah for sure. I thought that there would be better advances made with surfboard design and materials to tell you the truth. When Mr X [Glen Winton] was experimenting with jet propulsion design and Ben Lexcen was making advances with winged keels I thought that we'd be riding hoverboards or something out of the 'Jetsons'. Maybe this area is where the next big quantum leap will come from.

You also predicted that surfing would take it's aerial motivations from skateboarding, wave jumping and bodyboarding? Has this come true, do we still look to those sports for inspiration? I think that skateboarding and bodyboarding have already contributed. Kelly's first rodeo-clown was basically an ARS [air, roll, spin] straight out of the bodyboarding handbook. And the Dogtown pool grinds and airs are the foundation for todays aerial antics. Snowboarding for sure will be the next big source of inspiration.

If you were commissioned to write a similar article now what would be your prediction of moves twenty years from now? Just double everything. Twice as high, twice as fast, double flips / air-spins and all sorts of variations. More intense gymnastics for the aqua-brats!

The Boost Mobile SurfSho begins tomorrow (Friday). The first two days use the Airshow format to decide wildcards for the main event on Sunday. Competitors in the main event have to attempt whatever move gets spun on the 'trick wheel'. Moves include: flips, superman airs, shove-it's, alley oops and grabs, just to name a few. Come down to Bondi on Sunday to see the moves of the future.
