"In 2025 the contribution of private business investment to GDP growth has fallen to zero; the growth in real capital stock per person is zero; real per capita income growth is zero; mining investment growth is zero; non-mining business investment growth has halved since Keating was treasurer; the housing debt to household income ratio is five times what it was in 1985; the average house now costs eight times the average income versus three times then."
That's one hell of a picture to paint of the economy. Fuck it, might as well just go surfing. Worked in the 1990s recession.
(If Keating was such a well-remembered reformist legend, why did they set in place the Button plan - never was reviewed or altered in it's course - and we subsequently lost our whole car industry as the support was lessened to zero. Every other country supports their auto industry, as Mr Trump is pointing out. We sure could use the productivity that it's value-adding produced right now, the capital investment, not to mention the skilled work for those productivity-per-capita data points. We are the only ones who have toasted our entire car industry and that began on Hawke/Keating's watch.)
It's by design...it's the objective of today's lunatic progressive left, including the ALP: destruction of the private sector and creation of economic dependency on the state, in a way that the numbers don't show up in unemployment figures.
It's already happening in the public sector, particularly universities. What has happened here is there has been a massive, disproportionate growth in the administrative and management bodies of universities relative to the actual workforce that performs the two basic functions of universities: lecturers and researchers.
But the joke often heard in universities is as the size of the administrative staff increases, they actually get less done and are more difficult to deal with.
What's happening is there is a burgeoning and growing administrative staff of people who don't actually do anything except participate in progressive activism. They prance around the campus participating in all the stalls and protests waving their rainbow trans, indigenous and pro Hamas Palestine flags, take extended lunch breaks, are in endless meetings, etc, but when you ask them to actually do something for you it turns into a ridiculous drama and just goes around in circles until you give up.
So what these "staff" really are are just unemployed people receiving welfare from the state and thus are dependent on the state, but because they're "employed" by the university, they don't show up in unemployment figures.
And not only that, they're getting paid to overwhelmingly participate in progressive political activism, and hence further the cause of the lunatic progressives.
The same thing is happening across the public sector across all of the West.
It's what Elon's doge is trying to eliminate.
Private sector growth, investment, efficiency and productivity are believed by the left to be the enemy.
What's more important is a huge unemployed welfare state in disguise hiding in the public sector all getting paid to participate in progressive activism. Leftism 101.

Sussan got the gig. Tim OBrien deputy.

Good on her. I wish Sussan all the best of luck.... she's got a mountain to climb.
Only one?, ha, more like the whole bloody range as in the Alps, the daily white anting will be ugly. I’ll give her 6 months at best … I’m calling it now, ok, it’s the end of the Liberals as a meaningful centre right party!

Saw that probably a smart thing in the short term for LNP a women and more moderate than Angus,
not great for Jacinta though, but she is only 44 plenty of time, for perceptive Albo is 62, Ley 63 she will only gain more experience

Libs got pants'd, we got our arses handed to us, flogged, embarassed, dunked on, yep all of the above. The labor faithful are up and about, having their moment in the sun for sure and so they should be. However! The mountain to climb will become a mole hill real quick if our electricity prices don't come down, subsidies will only get you so long and so far until the population gets buyers remorse. Ley was a smart move, takes away a pointed attack line from the abc snipers, and with her deputy they will obviously rejuvenate the nuclear debate. We need that hot, young nuclear scientist from the US to help sell it more effectively, partnered with a female leader could be a potent sell, timed right with an explosion in our power prices and we will back in the mix before you can say 'leadership spill' !

From Sundays NT News (sorry couldn't post the actual article).
"Flip-flopping CLP Senator Jacinta Price’s popularity slumped across the Territory at last weekend’s federal election compared with her results in 2022 , with her CLP vote went backwards by 11 per cent her home town of Alice Springs .
Senator Price held her Senate position on Saturday, but the enemy of most Aboriginal people polled substantially worse in the Territory than she did at the previous federal poll.
DUMPING THE MOB WHO GAVE HER THE SEAT
She angered National Party and CLP colleagues by announcing on Thursday she would switch her parliamentary allegiance to the Liberal Party, the Nationals’ coalition colleague.
At last weekend’s election, key Central Australian polling booths in particular showed Senator Price’s share of the Senate vote fell dramatically.
At Alice Springs booth the CLP, with Senator Price as its number one candidate, received 267 Senate votes on Saturday compared with 416 in 2022. Her share of the total Senate vote on Saturday was 25.48 per cent in 2025 compared with 31.71 in 2022.
At the last election her opponent, Labor Senator Malarndirri McCarthy polled 27.29 per cent of the Senate vote compared with Senator Price’s 31.71 per cent.
This result flipped last Saturday with Senator McCarthy 31.87 per cent of the vote to Senator Price’s 25.48 per cent.
At nearby Braitling booth Senator Price polled 234 votes this year compared with 279 in 2022 and at Larrapinta she polled 126 votes this year compared with 249 votes in 2022.
At the Tennant Creek booth in 2022 Senator Price polled 429 votes – or 39.8 per cent of the vote – compared with just 237 votes or 27.65 of the share last weekend.
NOT HAPPY JAN
Nationals Senator Matt Canavan attacked Senator Price, pointing to an 11 per cent drop in electorate support for her in Alice Springs.
“Jacinta’s done enormous damage to her reputation,” Senator Canavan said.
“I don’t know how you can go to the people one week and say I’m going to represent this party in the nation’s parliament and then, the very next week, turn around and say ‘actually I’ve changed my mind and I’m going to go to a different side’.
It’s like changing sides on the football field once the whistle has blown and it’s not the sort of behaviour Australians appreciate.
“How come the CLP went backwards 11 per cent in Jacinta’s home town of Alice Springs with all of the crime that’s there? If Jacinta can’t win Alice Springs, how is she going to win over Australia?”
From Sundays NT News :
- Our source: Colin Cowell

Must be “ fake news “ SR , apparently she’s more popular than Albo . Speaking of Alice Springs, what did she actually do when she was a councillor there ? Her absentee from meetings was written about, along with her pledge of commitment to the town, only to quit 6 months later . Gina will be looking to restock her stable before long .

Sky News host Andrew Bolt criticises the Liberal Party for positioning Jacinta Nampijinpa Price as their “saviour” following her announcement to run for deputy leader.

A few facts if Jacinta Price gets the deputy Oppostion Leader's position. A position and rewards that a die hard grifter would love!
Jacinta Price looking down the barrel of nearly
$370,000 a year — off just 324 votes. Noice!
ON THE BACK OF ONLY 324 personal votes - Yep, so far, only 324 people actually specifically voted for Price.
We just checked the official AEC results for the Northern Territory Senate race, and… yeah, it’s wild.
If #AngusTaylor becomes leader of the smouldering Liberal ruins and #JacintaPrice ends up as Deputy Leader, Party Jumper Price will be on $368,517 a year.
Now, that alone might not sound outrageous — until you realise:
Only 324 people actually voted for her by name.*
That’s not a typo. Three hundred and twenty-four.
That’s a 90% collapse from her 2022 personal vote, where 3,309 people marked her name directly.
(And no, we’re not talking about party-line votes — we mean actual humans who picked her, not just ticked CLP above the line.)
So to recap:
90% drop in personal votes
Potential promotion
$370k salary
All from just 324 individual votes
And if she expenses like #SussanLey?
Add another $1.5 million in taxpayer-funded “extras.”**
That’s nearly $2 million a year for someone barely anyone personally backed.
*AEC official figures at 2:00 PM, 12 May 2025 AEST
**Based on #SussanLey’s 12-month expenses to March 2025
Champagne anyone?
If our numbers are right — and they come straight from the AEC and official expenses data — then yeah, it’s a hell of a return on 324 votes.

After their election debacle I felt it would take the LNP a good six years to reset, develop some realistic, viable policies and present a united face to become even remotely electable.
However, after seeing Senator Alex Antic walking past the media scrum today shouting “Fake News”, I’ll change that to twelve years.
Actually, the longer they are unelectable the better off we’ll all be.

@Guy
Mate you clearly dont do social media, she has a huge fan base, have a look under any main stream media article about her you will always read a shit load of comments saying she needs to be PM no matter what the article related to her is about.
But yes of course she also has her haters especially on the left and if you see more left leaning media comments you will get lots of haters people like you and others here, people that will never vote lNP so your views on her are actually irrelevant.
But yeah as much as i dont like it, these things cant be rushed, so it is right for LNP to give those in line like Sussan a go first and let Jacinta gain more experience in politics.

Reckon Price will be lucky to make it a term, never mind PM material.
Social media echo chamber spanning from Sky, sure she is popular.
Let the lnp go further into irrelevance.
Nothing appealing about her for main stream Australia.
Slogans backed by nothing as far as I can tell.
But yeah PM material.

@info, you are welcome to believe what you like based on your social media algorithms but do I really need to remind you that country just overwhelmingly rejected the LNP and its far right spiel. That’s rejection by millions of voters!

andy-mac wrote:But saying that, cannot see anyone in lnp who is PM material...
totally, and that's the top and bottom of it
but ya know, outside of the party faithful, most people would say the same about labor...
it seems it's a particulaly bland form of mediocrity that survives long enough to percolate up in this political age
libs obviously in a lot if trouble, much more so than labor, but anything can look 'better', if the shit's hitting the fan...
which it likely will

having said that, those jp numbers are pretty damning, she might have had her time in the sun...

and speaking of mental, funny the lnp crew crying about ley, calling her leftist and labor, and whatever...
what part of appeal to the majority do they not understand?

Yep, just like Dutton. Geez, they’re so out of touch, aren’t they?

One other thing
Remember how we all hoped that Turnbull would turn the LNP away from the far right and how that ended badly for him and the country only for us all to find out afterwards how he had to sell his soul to the likes of Morrison/Dutton and Joyce/the Nats to get the job … well what deals will Ley have to make with the 25 Liberal members who wanted Taylor and the Nats???

Yeah ugly politics.
I think most Australians see it for what it is and except for maybe a couple of electorates and keeping some donors happy, it will not help them in any way.

The upside of Trumpism @andymac. The backlash to that style of politics is an over correction hence the election numbers imo.

This podcast looks at the last Australian election from a US perspective. There’s a few interesting reflections about what Aussies hold dear, about the Trump-Albanese relationship and about Australia’s relationship with China.

From the comments in yesterday’s Age … a salient point indeed and shows just how divided the Liberals are and the ricky road ahead for Ley!!
“ Three Liberal Senators who lost their seats at this election voted today (because their terms end 30th June). It seems likely they all backed Ley. Without their votes after July 1 she leads 26-25. So one person changing sides could sink her”.
Might as well put this up in the politics subforum, to spare the front page. It's 18 months away or so, but here we go.
