Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 6th February)

Best Days: Monday morning protected spots, Tuesday morning, Wednesday morning

Recap

Good clean conditions with a few little waves across the South West in the 3ft range, tiny to the north again. This morning wasn't quite as clean though there was a slight kick in new energy across the South West, not enough for protected spots though.

This week and weekend (Feb 7 - 10)

Another small pulse of mid-period swell is expected tomorrow across the South West, hopefully providing 3ft+ sets on the magnets but winds will be tricky and strong from the SE, tending S/SE into the afternoon. Perth and Mandurah will be tiny.

Friday will be cleaner though still windy with an E/SE offshore but the swell only small to tiny and fading.

The surf will continue to bottom out on Saturday though with favourable morning E/SE offshore winds, SE Sunday morning and still minimal in size.

Our new swell for the weekend has been downgraded a little and shoved back more to Monday which is a shame.

The poorly aligned polar front will generate a relatively weak fetch of strong W/NW-W/SW winds through our southern swell window. The swell is due to kick later Sunday now and reach 3ft+ on dark, peaking Monday to 3-4ft or so, tiny in Mandurah and Perth again.

Winds Monday morning look OK but not great and out of the S/SE, better and from the SE Tuesday morning though with easing swell.

As this swell eases we may see some long-period, small and very inconsistent W/NW groundswell from Tropical Cyclone Funani which is currently east of Madagascar.

This cyclone is forecast to intensity and drift south-east through our swell window, possible generating a small W/NW groundswell.

No major size is due off this system as of yet, with a better S/SW groundswell likely on Wednesday from a polar fetch of strong to gale-force SW winds in our southern swell window. More on all of this Friday.

Funani sounds fortuitous. I will never forget a week of unforgettable waves from a similar system but it was a lot closer to the coast.
