Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 11th March)

Best Days: Thursday morning, Friday morning exposed breaks, Saturday and Sunday mornings swell magnets around Margs

Recap

Smaller surf through yesterday and today but with favourable offshore winds for Margs and Perth through the mornings. Geraldton was workable yesterday but less than ideal today.

This week and weekend (Mar 12 - 15)

A slight kick in S/SW groundswell is due across the state tomorrow from frontal activity on the edge of our swell window, to the south-west of the state earlier this week.

No major size is due with inconsistent 3-5ft sets at swell magnets in the South West, 1-1.5ft waves in Perth and 2ft to occasionally 3ft waves up at Gero.

A drop in size is then due later in the afternoon and further through Friday and into Saturday, bottoming out Sunday.

Conditions are looking good for all regions with offshore E/SE winds across Margs tomorrow (E/NE winds to the north), and then E/NE tending NE winds Friday across all locations. Saturday should continue to see favourable E'ly winds as ex Tropical Cyclone Olwyn (forecast to develop tomorrow morning) pushes south down the WA coast. This cyclone won't generate any decent swell at all but should bring a good rain event.

Sunday is then likely to see onshore winds north of the weakening lows axis at about Busselton, while Margs should see morning E/NE winds.

Next Monday onwards (Mar 16 onwards)

As touched on last update there's nothing major on the cards for early next week with a general blocking pattern setting up through our swell window over the weekend. Small and inconsistent background swell will stop Margs going flat on Monday and Tuesday with some larger but weak close-range swell due into Wednesday and Thursday.

This is due to be generated by a weak front pushing up and into us Wednesday/Thursday, but the models are still divergent regarding this development. We'll take a closer look at this on Friday.

Some nice looking waves up in the Pilbara from TC Olwyn..

"Photo taken by our observer at Learmonth shows the swell is starting to rise ahead of #CycloneOlwyn"
