Improved swell outlook early next week

Victoria Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 4th December)

Best Days: Exposed beaches tomorrow, Surf Coast Sunday afternoon and most of Monday

Recap

The very large kick in S/SW groundswell seen into Wednesday afternoon and evening eased back into yesterday morning, though the Surf Coast reefs were still a consistent and chunky 6ft, 6-8ft to the east.

Conditions were clean but a touch lumpy and afternoon sea breezes added bumps as the swell continued to ease.

This morning we've still got 3ft sets on the Surf Coast swell magnets, clean in protected spots and bumpy 3-5ft surf to the east.

This weekend and week (Dec 5 - 11)

Moving into the weekend, we'll see the surf remaining small tomorrow, holding in size through the morning with a reinforcing mid-period SW swell pulse. This swell will fade from late morning with easing sets from 3ft to possibly 4ft on the Mornington Peninsula and 2ft on the Surf Coast.

The beaches will be clean though windy under a strong N/NE wind that will hold until late afternoon, shifting strong NW thereafter.

Looking at the deepening mid-latitude low under Western Australia through this afternoon and this system is now due to sit a touch further south and be much more favourable for swell production across the state.

The low will develop favourably for us tomorrow, with a great fetch of strong to gale-force W/SW winds now forecast to be projected east through our western swell window. The low will be slow moving with a couple of embedded fronts projecting burst of stronger winds towards us.

As the low moves across Tassie Sunday evening we'll continue to see a good fetch of S/SW gales aimed up through our southern swell window on the backside of the low, with the end result being a moderate moderate to large W/SW groundswell building Sunday, easing Monday ahead of a reinforcing S/SW pulse Tuesday.

Size wise the Surf Coast should build slowly Sunday from a weak 2-3ft in the morning to 3-4ft late afternoon with 4ft+ surf due Monday on the magnets (smaller and to 3ft in protected spots). The Mornington Peninsula should build to 5-6ft+ Sunday afternoon with 6ft to possibly 8ft sets on Monday.

Winds look to favour protected spots with a strong, persistent NW tending W/NW breeze Sunday, W/NW Monday ahead of a late afternoon shift to the W/SW-SW.

Tuesday unfortunately looks average as we fall on the backside of the low, resulting in fresh SW winds, though there'll be that new S/SW pulse with 3-4ft sets due across the Surf Coast all day, 6ft to the east.

It looks like we'll see winds revert back to the W/NW on Wednesday morning with smaller, easing 2-3ft sets on the Surf Coast.

Longer term, a high will move in slowly from the west next week, swinging winds S-SE and one final strong polar front will fire up in our swell window before things go quiet. A moderate sized S/SW swell is on the cards for late week, but beyond this, a positive Southern Annular Mode (SAM) event will see the westerly storm track contract to the poles, and weaken.

This will see the Southern Ocean become inactive, with nothing too significant at all on the cards for next week at least (small S/SW swells). More on this Monday. Have a great weekend!

Craig the west coast had what they called a shocker however I was thinking it is often the early spring which brings some biggest consistent swells but the fly in the ointment is the winds - from multiple directions, changing in strength from mild to wild in an afternoon, and the temperature like a yo yo. Am I way off here?

As in west of Otway? I'd say with all this constant swell and little time to clean up between the next front the windows would have been very limited. Between monstrous, offshore 12-15ft surf to bumpy, smaller waves.

That's what I thought, but the last two weeks have been good around the Surf Coast.

Everyone in Victoria calls what is a relatively new name 'Surf Coast'(from the shire), the west coast. East Coast, West Coast, the island and down south (peterborough, port cambell, etc..).

Good stuff mate. It has been really nice, winter winds in spring warmth.
Good luck getting your head around the 4+1 little bins that each house now has though... one to surf down the street for each member of a family

Droping tide and strengthening swell, getting reports of fun 4ft+ sets on the SC swell magnets. It's much smaller across other breaks with the west direction though.

Yeah, not the best swell generating system with it's patchy structure and lack of strength.

Keep posting photo updates please!

Wouldn't want any low key sessions to go down where the local crew that check it regularly from dawn onwards might get a few to themselves cause everyone else thought it would be onshore.

The more the merrier eh?

Think I might create a bot army, whose sole purpose is to screenshot webcams and post them here with descriptions about how good/shit it is. Throw in some AI/machine learning and it'll be pretty accurate too.

You know, just for fun.

To be fair though, the odd pic of Victoria’s 2nd most famous wave buried in the Swellnet notes is nothing compared countless surf coast based reporters, photographers and shapers that post photos and vids of current conditions all day everyday on instagram.

Thank fuck the MP and island crew are a little more constrained

Pffffff! Lol........

Everyone knew they'd be waves, it was obvious on the synoptic chart's and also detailed, VERY clearly in Craig's forecaster notes. This is nothing new, as you're more than aware, very detailed and very accurate surf reports have been occurring now for many, many years, much to your very vocal and repetitive displeasure.

I like to surf and I also like to contribute to this web page. I always do so, respectfully and never post photos or info of spots when they are actually any good.

As I stated, it was wonky donkey at that spot, not a soul in the water and wonky sections breaking 30m apart, hence nobody in the water.

Unfortunately, you just love too whine a lot Ringmaster, you always have in the comments and I'm sure you always will, you're just one of those strange, negative, glass half empty type of chaps but that's ok, I guess, it does take allsorts of people to make the world go around.

Hopefully you actually still managed too get some waves today, you know, off all those other fuckers, that you hate so much 'n don't deserve anything.

Anyway, whatever mate, if you're any good you should have got some waves, if not, maybe it's time you take up tennis or maybe something more aggressive like boxing, where you can beat the shit out of your opponent and stamp your authority, I'm sure that'd lift your negative spirits.

I think you've got me confused with VicLocal ya fuckin peckerhead.

But yeah.....keep documenting the surf as it happens if it gives you a hard on and some sort of perceived 'cred'.

I always get waves when it's on around here but for the fucken life of me can't work out why you'd wanna get on this site or other social media pages and constantly bring more attention to it.

Hope wherever you surf next is crowded as fuck ya kook.

Careful pal.

You're starting to emit the foul stench of the adult learner that I suspect you are.

You know.....moved here in the last 10 years or so and have a totally different outlook on surfing to those of us that grew up with it. Plenty around here these days unfortunately......

Vicreg's picture
Vicreg's picture
Vicreg Monday, 7 Dec 2020 at 9:50pm

Are you implying ringmaster that you are more entitled to something above an “adult learner” or “someone who moved here in the last ten years?” It sounds like you are saying you are more superior to some demographics. What’s up with that?

Wag is just a happy guy enjoying life and talking about it here every now and then. He seems like a great guy to have a happy surf with.

It’s time for the angry culture and the toxic vibe that surrounds some parts of the surfing world to die.
