Southern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 8th January)

Best Days: Tomorrow morning, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday

Recap

Tiny surf yesterday while a fun new W/SW swell has filled in today with early light winds before SE sea breezes kicked in.

This week and weekend (Jan 9 - 12)

The current W/SW groundswell is expected to ease back in size through tomorrow, slowly owing to the prolonged nature of the low that generated it.

2ft+ sets are due tomorrow morning across Clifton with moderate N/NE winds, giving into E/SE sea breezes.

Friday looks tiny with strong varying winds as a strengthen 'bombing low' again forms south-west of us.

This is the second 'bombing low' in two weekends, with it upgraded in strength and size since Monday.

The low will develop Friday evening, with a fetch of severe-gale to storm-force SW winds due to form in our south-western and then southern swell windows Saturday, generating a large SW tending S/SW groundswell.

The slow moving nature of the low will see the swell larger and longer lived than the one on the weekend.

The swell is likely to build through Saturday in size and power but with strong W/SW winds, reaching 3-4ft or so into the afternoon.

Larger surf is then due Sunday, coming in at 5-6ft, easing slowly Monday from 4-5ft+ or so out of the S'th. Winds are looking average and W/SW tending S/SE on Sunday, better Monday and out of the N/NE, but we'll have to review the timings, size and local winds for the weekend on Friday.

Following the 'bombing low' swell a fun W/SW swell is on the cards for mid-next week, but more on this Friday.
