Eastern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 3rd August)

Best Days: Tomorrow north-east swell magnets, protected spots Wednesday and Thursday morning, Friday morning

Recap

Well, being worried about Saturday's NE swell was on the money as reports of small to tiny, bumpy waves came in, small and to 2ft or so on Sunday as well.

Today the surf has remained tiny but clean across open beaches.

This week and weekend (Aug 4 - 9)

A small pulse of E/NE swell is still likely through tomorrow with inconsistent sets to 2ft to possibly 3ft, though there'll be long waits for sets. Conditions will be nice and clean with a W/SW breeze, shifting S'ly and strengthening into the afternoon.

The strengthening wind will be linked to a strong cold-outbreak pushing across the state, feeding a low pressure system forming off our coast Tuesday evening.

This will see gale-force S/SE winds project up the coast, with an infeed of strong to gale-force E/SE winds south-east of us.

This should kick up a solid increase in S/SE-SE swell Wednesday though it looks like the models are overcooking the size a little.

Stormy and messy 8ft+ waves are likely through the morning, possibly easing a little later as winds improve and swing back to the S/SW.

The low is then expected to broaden and push east on Thursday but we'll still see strong to gale-force S'ly winds just within our swell window, keeping the swell around 6ft+ out of the S/SE in the morning, then easing more rapidly Friday from 3ft+ or so.

Winds will slowly improve during the mornings with a fresh SW tending S'ly breeze Thursday, W/SW tending S/SE on Friday.

Saturday looks small with leftover amounts of swell and a SW tending SE breeze.

Moving into Sunday and next week, we're set to see good pulses of S'ly groundswell as the storm track moves into a favourable position, leading to a week or more of swell from this direction.

The first of these may generate a good S'ly groundswell for later Sunday and Monday but Tuesday/Wednesday look a better chance for size. More on this Wednesday.
