Eastern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 28th February)

Best Days: South swell magnets tomorrow morning, Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday

Recap

Tiny surf yesterday but today we should see a new S'ly groundswell building across the south swell magnets, reaching 3-4ft.

This weekend and next week (Feb 29 – Mar 6)

We should be seeing the first pulse of S'ly groundswell in a series filling in this afternoon, generated by a strong Southern Ocean frontal progression over the past few days. Sets to 3-4ft are due across south swell magnets, easing back from 3ft tomorrow morning.

Winds are looking great with NW offshore expected to last all day, similar Sunday with a NW tending N/NW breeze.

On Sunday though we'll see a new long-period S'ly groundswell filling in, produced by a strengthening polar front that's currently south-west of us.

A great fetch of severe-gale to storm-force W/SW winds will be generated in our southern swell window today and tomorrow morning, with the groundswell expected to fill in Sunday and kick to 3-4ft again across south swell magnets, if not for the rare sneaky bigger one.

The swell will ease into Monday but a strong S'ly change is due to move through early morning easing through the day and NE later. The swell will drop rapidly though and offer no real decent size later in the day.

We then look at the final frontal system in the progression for this period, and while weaker than the ones before, it will form further east and more in our southern swell window, projecting a fetch of strong SW winds up past us through Monday.

A fun mid-period S'ly swell should be seen, building late Tuesday and peaking Wednesday morning to 3-4ft across the south swell magnets, easing thereafter. Conditions at this stage are looking favourable with a variable N/NW tending NE breeze on Wednesday, similar Thursday as the swell eases.

Now longer term we're still looking at a decent run of E/NE swell but with onshore winds from late next weekend, but more on this Monday. Have a great weekend!
