Eastern Tasmania Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 9th January)

Best Days: Monday morning, Wednesday onwards

Recap

The NE windswell continued in the 2-3ft range across exposed breaks yesterday as winds tended offshore through the middle of the day and then back to the N/NW later.

Today a S'ly change pushed through with a drop in swell back to 2ft or so, favouring southern corners over open beaches.

This weekend (Jan 10 - 11)

We should see small levels of NE windswell continuing across the coast over the weekend from a broad and persistent fetch of NE winds off the Southern NSW.

NE swell magnets should persist at 2ft+ tomorrow morning, easing through the day and back from 2ft or so Sunday morning.

Winds will be pretty poor but with a moderate to fresh E/SE breeze tomorrow and SE tending E'ly wind Sunday.

These onshore winds will be related to a surface trough sitting to our north-east with small and weak amounts of E'ly windswell due from this source.

Monday onwards (Jan 12 onwards)

The start of next week is expected to start off slow with a small mix of NE windswell, E/NE trade-swell and E'ly windswell with light variable winds through the morning.

Some better sized NE swell is due to develop into Tuesday and Wednesday mixed in with a building S/SE swell as the surface trough to our north-east deepens and supports the formation of a deep and powerful low pressure system.

Current forecasts are indicating that a broad fetch of NE winds will be aimed towards us, kicking up windswell for Tuesday and Wednesday, peaking around 3-4ft or so during the day Wednesday as winds swing SW before the low directs stronger S/SE winds up past us into the evening.

Come Thursday a combo of S/SE and NE swells in the 3-4ft range is due under SW winds, favouring southern corners.

There's still a lot of room for movement with these scenarios but some good surfing days through Wednesday to Friday are on the cards. Check back here on Monday for a much clearer idea on the outlook through next week though. Have a great weekend!
