Swellnet Sessions

2012 Alley Fish Fry

Earlier this month the 6th Annual Alley Fish Fry went down in the park at Currumbin. Organiser Grant Newby widened the criteria this year giving lawn space to many other alternative craft. From straight ahead fish to mini-Simmons there were all sorts of shapes to stare out, rub rails and even take for a spin out the Alley. One thing many of the boards seemed to have in common this year was colour. Nude foam and balsa is out apparently...

Sandstone and Sand

More photos from last weeks swell in Sydney and there ain't a shot of Kelly to be seen. John Clark was shooting north of the bridge, mixing it up between a local rock ledge filled with hoary old locals and a board-snapping beachie that's only a doggy door away from a straight closeout.

PS: Ryan Hayfield is the fella getting pitted at the ledge.

Harrison Roach at Pipe: A Change of Pace

Harrison Roach recently displayed his versatility on a longboard. Better known for his smooth longboard style on the mellow Noosa points Harrison successfully adapted his act to the intensity of Pipe. Photographer Jack Dekort caught him going through his paces while riding a classic Hawaiian downrail pintail.

Footloose and Neoprene Free

Mornington Peninsula surfers recently had a late summer fling with a clean mid-range swell and offshore northerlies. It was blue water and boardshorts material of the kind Victorians get so little of, and to top it off the banks were in fine form. On this day the locals - amongst them Caiden Fowler, Adam Morris, Nick Wallace, Skeeta Derham and Josh Hallum - were getting footloose and fancy free in the warm conditions.

Kelly Slater's Solander Caper

Last week we ran a session titled 'King Hit' featuring Old Baldy copping an uncharacteristic drubbing at the hands of Cape Solander. The following day the lads at STAB ran an impromptu questionnaire around the Solander lineup regarding Kelly's performance. Big-name surfers were apparently talking about his dominance and “ability to control the ocean”.

Well, who's to argue? Office jockeys like me who didn't even see the session? Hell no!

Rock Tight

Charlie Straumeitis parks himself on the rocks at Cape Solander and locks in tight on the surfers. With limited vantage points pulled back shots can look a bit same same at the Cape, but zoomed in we get a closer grip on what the surfers are seeing and feeling.

The cast, in order of appearance, are Tommy Whits, Dan Ross, Hippo, Caleb McLean and Taj Burrow.

Thursday Lunchbreak

Choose your ideal lunchtime scenario: ham and cheese roll on a pleasant park bench or a manic session in overhead pits. A small crew up Newcastle way make their choice.

Green Eyed Monsters Pt. 1

OK, by now y'all know Cape Solander has been the place to be the last two days - no point me telling you that. Allow me to give you a quick rundown on these shots though. They were taken by Darryl Menzies after lunch yesterday, Mark Matthews, Hippo, Dan Ross and Dom Wills all make an appearance, as do various locals.

We'll have plenty more images in the coming days.

King Hit

Kelly Slater made a return to Cape Solander yesterday, though it wasn't quite as succesful as last Autumn's hit 'n run session that resulted in a few mag covers. While the swell was ruler sharp out of the south-east the wind was playing havoc on the exposed Kurnell coastline. With the options shut down at the mainbreak Slater took on the next wave south with mixed success.

21 Gun Salute

Apparently the east coast of Australia isn't the only place that had abnormal weather and surf conditions over summer. South Australia also had an unusual season with a relatively light run of swell, especially for the often swell-soaked Eyre Peninsula.

Things appear to have turned the corner if this sequence is anything to go by. 'Pistol' Pete Tomlinson gives the 21 Gun Salute to a grinding South Australian barrel welcoming autumn back with a blast.
