Swellnet Sessions

Best Western

Sunday morning in the Margaret River region threw up some excellent surf. Warm(ish) water barrels were breaking under a blue sky with a dedicated local crew taking it apart.

Swellnet reporter, Calvin Best, denied himself part of the fun to snap these photos for us.

The Ecstasy of Victory

"Did I win? Did I win?"

Taj Burrow hits the beach following his epic final against Adriano De Souza at Snapper Rocks this afternoon. With the judges yet to drop scores for each competitors last waves neither knows if they've won. The Brazilian contingent rush to Minheirinho, the Aussies to Taj. Everyone is confused and waiting.

Alex Ormerod captures the emotion as the wave scores - and the final result - are announced.

We'll have more action shots from today shortly.

Being There

Young West Oz photographer, Rylan Blair, takes you away from the humdrum for just one moment and inside crisp frontlit barrels breaking over a sandy bottom. Ignore the dimensions and admire the view - imagine yourself being there.

Day 4 on the Gold Coast (after lunch)

The afternoon held some exciting match-ups with Parko v Julian and Mig Pupo v Ace Buchan. As the northerly breeze freshened an air attack was always likely so Alex Ormerod trained his sights on the high-flying surfers.

Day 3 on the Gold Coast

The wind swung more north-east, the Sunday crowds dissappeared, and the surf dropped a notch, but still the Snapper show went on. It wasn't the pointy end of the draw, nor the fat end, just a day of getting through the heats with one or two electric match-ups keeping the crowd on their toes.

Alex Ormerod maintained the pace, dodging and weaving and scoping all the day's action.

Day 4 on the Gold Coast (before lunch)

There were some veritable blockbuster heats this morning at Snapper Rocks. In the Round 4, three man heats Kelly Slater, Parko, Jordy, Taj and Julian all surfed this morning. Alex Ormerod busted out the 600mm bazooka to capture the action.

Check the first sequence of Slater's top turn. Technically perfect in every aspect.

Already Indo

The Indo season is still months away from swinging into action. The only surfers currently swinging through the islands are budget travellers taking advantage of off-season deals and northern hemisphere climate refugees. Oh, and John Barton too.

Day 2 on the Gold Coast

It was the day promoters dream of: hot, sunny and of course, Sunday. The punters were out in force at the Quiksilver Pro, spending their hard-earned in the merch tents and being entertained by the surfers out front. The surf remained steady all day at around 3 feet and even the ever-threatening seabreeze took note of the Sabbath.

The day's action was bookended with two exciting heats: Dane vs Taj in the opener and Kolohe vs Simpo in the closing heat as the action slammed shut.

Alex Ormerod lurked and prowled in the sultry Queensland sun training his lens on all the action.

Snapper Warm Up Snaps

The clock is counting day on the Quiksilver Pro at Snapper Rocks with today being the first day of the waiting period. For the last week the southern end of the Gold Coast has been overrun with earnest and energetic pro surfers prepapring for their heats. Everywhere you look someone is blowing up.

Gold Coast photographer, Ryan Williams, snapped these shots during the last day of warm ups.

Back on native shores

Gold Coast photographer, Ryan Williams, has just returned from a three month stint in northern Sumatra. Leaving the northerlies and bluebottles behind he set up camp at Aura Surf Resort on Simeulue, taking photos and surfing. He's back on native shores now and also on somewhat of a roll - since landing he's won a surfboard in a photo competition and lucked into some classic beachbreak days near home.

All photos by Ryan. Surfers include Eddie Kelly, Louie Gervais, Matt Kennedy and Timmy Wright.

And the fun don't done

The 2012 Aussie contest season is heating up with two comps down and the Quikky Pro about to begin, yet the Hawaiian season is still to end. Those still on the Rock - locals and tourists alike - have been experiencing a great late season burst of swell.

Jack Dekort has been one of the fortunate few and scored these photos for us, all taken during the past week.

In The Nook

Sydney photographer, Charlie Straumeitis, recently took a southern sojourn that coincided with a solid southerly swell. It was the first decent swell in weeks, however it only offered a short window of good conditions before the wind turned onshore. Charlie found most of the usual haunts blown out or overrun with swell till he rounded this coastal nook to see it sheltered and pumping.
