Swellnet Sessions

Clearwater Revival

Here's another clean collection of photos from Rylan Blair of Perth. Once again they're taken at his local beachbreaks and once again they're utterly spotless - clean glass, clear water and cloudless sky.

All photos by Rylan. Check his last Swellnet Session.

Bukit and Beyond

Sunshine Coast photographer, Jack Dekort, left last week for his annual pilgrimage to Indonesia and he appears to have timed this trip well. An abundance of swell is currently rearing out of the southern Indian Ocean heading toward the island chain. These photos are from Jack's first two days on Bali. Stay tuned for more.

Late Season Burst

As was covered in an earlier Swellnet Session Victoria's Surf Coast recently had a burst of late winter swell. Last Sunday was large and bumpy but by Monday the swell and the water surface had settled into smooth, defined lines. Elliot Gray captured the late season swell on both days. The last shots in this Session were taken midday Monday when the Rip Curl lunchtime brigade and very few others were in the water.

Never Gets Old

OK, so these photos are a week or two old which makes them near redundant in internet terms. But who are we to deny you the sight of classic Padang even if it ain't the newest news in the surfing world?

Padang Padang pumping during the Rip Curl Cup earlier this month. For those with a short memory Chris Ward won and popped the question to his girl on the podium.

Ellis Ericson picks up Good Vibrations

It was an inauspicious way to start the day of the Good Vibrations Retro Single Fin comp - hungover. He was gonna ditch competing yet when Ellis Ericson got to the beach at Canggu he found himself in Heat 8 of the First Round. So, said Ellis, "I just got out there....I just kept powering and the heats just started turning over you know?"

Same As It Ever Was

There's a classic, timeless quality about the Bells and Winki line ups. How many times have you seen them like this with ruler-straight lines fanned by a stiff offshore breeze? Many times no doubt, and it never gets less exciting.

Mick vs Parko

The final of the Billabong Pro Tahiti was another classic showdown between the two ageing Cooly kids. Mick had the momentum going into the final following a last second 10-pointer in his Quarter against Ricardo Dos Santos and coming over the top of Owen Wright in their high-scoring Semi. Despite this it was Parko who got off to a flyer in the Final. His first two waves were a 9.50 and an 8.87 and it appeared he had the game sewn up after ten minutes.

The Real Thing

There's been a lot of talk this past week about wavepools on the Gold Coast. In this gallery local photographer, Grant Davis, shows that no matter how small the waves are the real thing is so much better.

Under The Sea - Tahiti

It's Day 9 of the Teahupoo waiting period and the surf is still grim. Things hit rock bottom yesterday when the ASP photographers, who provide visual updates of competition proceedings, uploaded photos of bananas, coconuts and paw paws to their website. I'll spare you those.

Today the ASP photogs actually hit the water and though the waves were small the surrounds were photogenic. They were even paid a visit by the local wildlife.

Fly In / Fly Out

Following their thumping big wave session at an open ocean reef Greg Long and his wingman, Twiggy Baker, were guests at a number of smaller and equally hollow reefs. Over the course of a week they, along with Josiah Schmucker, caught some of the biggest waves paddled into in Oz and got a ridiculous amount of ledging barrels. Even managed time to wet the line.

In Between Swells

After a slow old winter the swell activity on Victoria's Surf Coast has perked up ever so slightly in the last few weeks. The odd great swell has been interspersed by stretches of small waves - like right now, for instance, where Torquay is just 1-2 feet. Fortunately the next swell is due on Friday and shoud provide good waves right through the weekend.

Tricky Spells

Words and photos by John Barton of Pitstop Hill Resort, Mentawai.

Mother Nature was up to her old tricks again this month. And not the fun kind either; no disappearing handkerchiefs, no magic wands and no coins popping out from behind our ears...just a lot of tricky conditions.
