Quiksilver Pro Day 5 - Finals

Only three heats were surfed at the Quiksilver Pro France on Day 5: two Semifinals and a Final. Victorious was Robert Kelly Slater, who picked up his 51st ASP World Tour win, and his first Quiksilver Pro France trophy.

Festival of the Hoot!

The last week in September: It's the time of year when Victorians get nutty for the AFL Grand Final and all that it embodies - sport, teamwork, and binge drinking.

This time 'round, however, Darren Wilcock and a couple of lads brushed the festival of the boot for their own pumping pre-match entertainment.

Quiksilver Pro France Day 4

Six perfect 10s. That's how many have been scored so far at the Quiksilver Pro France. It may well be a record for a WT competition but I'm too lazy to confirm that for you. Let's just say it's a lot and be done with it.

Compare thee to a summers day

There's been a protracted flat spell up Queensland way but Grant Davis recently squeezed a few feet from the ocean on a clear blue day. With the weather warming and the Coral Sea stirring these photos are a sign of the summer to come.

Quiksilver Pro France Day 3

"There are better waves out there than my 10," Dane Reynolds said of his 'perfect' score in Round 3 of the Quiksilver Pro France. Reynolds, who scored 16.50 for his two wave total, smoked Mick Fanning who scored just 2.60. Fortunately for Mick Dane didn't catch one of the waves that was better than a 10 or the difference would've been greater and surfing's subjectivity would've been brought into question by random internet commenters.

Lesser Sunda

Traipsing east across Indonesia's Lesser Sunda islands Jack Dekort lucked into a few reefs in full flight. He also contracted a nasty, and as yet undiagnosed, tropical bug.

Here are some of his memories taken before the night sweats began.

Quiksilver Pro France Day 2

Was it worth the wait? Maybe. After being postponed for 7 hours, waiting for the tide to drop then waiting for it to rise again, the Quik Pro France ran 7 heats of Round 2 late yesterday. It was a board breaking, sand-in-every-orifice affair as 6 foot plus sets thumped on the bank at la Graviere mere metres from the shore. Despite the close proximity to dry land Jeremy Flores still copped a two wave hold down - the first one of his life - in his heat win over Yadin Nicol.

From the Bellarine to Bangko Bangko

Across the water from Elliot Gray's Victorian home lies an occassional lefthander. It needs a lot of size for it to break and wrap back into the prevailing breeze, turning the long and hollow lines into offshore perfection.

While staying in Bali recently Elliot made a similar journey across the water to a long and hollow left that also needs size to make it wrap back into the prevailing breeze.

All shots by Elliot.

Quiksilver Pro France Day 1

There wasn't much to report on from day one of the Quiksilver Pro France. All the usual events happened: Slater won his heat, Mick gave a clinical display, and Dane Reynolds in his first WT for a while gave a classically awkward beach interview with the buxom Rosy Hodge. As expected a lot of barrels got ridden, here's the best of 'em. And if press releases are your bag click here.

Quik Pro France from the air

The Quiksilver Pro France starts in two days and from all reports the local banks are in good order. There's a good chance then that we'll see waves like last years competition. Here's hoping that we don't also have a repeat performance of the webcast when the transmission cut during the last five minutes of the final between Julian Wilson and Gabriel Medina. For those who don't remember, Medina won.

These shots from 2011 were taken by Bernard Testemale.

Wilmotte Studios - Mentawai Islands

Sydney photographer, Jeremy Wilmotte, recently returned from the studio where he scored great waves under excellent light. Ain't no point-and-shoot business happening here.

Jeremy recently plugged in his new website which is full of slick images. Give it a click for a big dose of surf porn.

Parko at Trestles

He may not have won the Hurley Pro but in coming second Joel Parkinson assured pro surf fans that the 2012 title race will be one for the ages. Parko consolidated his second place on the rankings behind leader Mick Fanning with the winner at Trestles, Kelly Slater, jumping into third. So close is the race that the current top six all made the quarters at least at Trestles. Everyone vying for the title is surfing well.

ASP photographers Kirstin Scholtz and Sean Rowland captured Parko moving through the draw from his Round 1 heat to the Final.
