Swellnet Sessions

Jack Dekort - Best of 2012

You know how the saying goes, 'Christmas seems to get earlier every year'. It's still two months out yet the brochures have begun appearing in the mailbox, baubles and tinsel getting hung at the supermarket and fat blokes in red suits are waving placards by the side of the road announcing Xmas Sales.

Straight forward

Critical barrel riding can be a straightforward affair. Literally. No dramatic turns or wild body contortions to confuse the matter just stillness and subtlety. Get it right and it's Zen. 'When the entire body is the eye, while seeing you do not see. When the entire body is the mind, when thinking you do not think.'

Kerry Down, not turning but seeing, thinking and feeling his way through a series of straightforward NSW barrels. Simple, yeah?

All photos by Jughead.

New Zealand: Down Underer

Jim Culley is a Kiwi photog who has his own distinctive colour-saturated style. Culley uses the blues and greens of his local waves to compliment the lush land and wide open sky of New Zealand. And even though he's shooting his native waves this gallery has all the hallmarks of an exotic surf trip. Might be time to leave the Western Island and head for the land Down Underer.

He Is The Walrus

Picture the scene: It's a brilliant sunny day with small surf and there in the shallows is a cumbersome creature - Is it a dugong? A walrus perhaps? - floundering about in the shallows. Back and forth in the sand-filled shorey the creature lolls, not particularly pertubed until it rescues itself from the situation exiting on two legs wet sand dripping from every orifice.

Say hello to Jeremy Wilmotte!

SXSW

Been a bit of disparity in swell fortunes between West Oz and the rest of the country recently. Even more so than usual. As winter trundled into spring the swell engines slowed in QLD, NSW and much of Vicco, while the pistons kept powering over in WA. Been plenty of mid to large-size swells breaking under Grade A conditions, much like those seen in the photos below.

Pitstop Hill September Report

Command + C, copy and paste. Job done, time for a surf. This report could have been an easy one. A carbon copy of the two months before it, the start of September felt like a bad Indonesian rendition of the movie Groundhog Day. Donʼt get me wrong, Bill Murrayʼs a pretty funny guy (well he was in the 80ʼs apparently). Itʼs just that we werenʼt very amused by the same old storyline we were watching everyday; SE winds, peak season crowds and only a handful of clean options.

Indo Leftovers

Just before Jack Dekort took off for his latest trip (Fiji this time) he posted these shots from his recent trip Indo. "They're just leftovers," he said dismissively. "Sumbawa, Keramas, Ford Archbold styling through an overhead right.."

Leftovers in Indonesia but a square meal for the wave-starved East Coast of Oz.

Live Your Life

Live Your Life is a charity and clothing company started up by Bondi lad, Jordan Barta. Not just a hollow name, the meaning and motivation of Live Your Life came to Jordan following a run in with cancer. Putting things into perspective and putting his arse in to gear is what Jordan has done since the encounter and he urges others to do likewise.

And here's Jordan taking some of his own medicine, shooting Josh Ku at a wild little rock ledge somewhere on Australia's East Coast.
