Swellnet Sessions

Inside the Revolution

On Sunday night 60 Minutes ran a feature titled 'The GoPro Revolution'. In it they spruiked the mini cameras that, as the presenter said, "make you feel like you're right there in the thick of the action."

It's not just BASE jumping and big waves that average punters are now getting a glimpse of. GoPros have been used to great effect in small clean waves, shorebreaks even, affording a view that often gets seen but rarely gets appreciated.

HIC Hawaiian Pro - Days 1 & 2

It's November, the time of year when competitive surfing gets back on solids. Earlier this week, while the WT pros were wobbling about in Santa Cruz, the first two days of competition at the HIC Hawaiian Pro went down at meaty Sunset. It was a classic early season swell with light trades grooming the surface clean and a host of wave-starved locals tearing into it.

Competition should resume tomorrow with another hearty swell due to hit the North Shore.

Alchemy in the Southern Seas

"To realise one's destiny is a person's only obligation." - Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist.

In 2010 Andrew James, his bro Richard, and friend, Tristan Fitzherbert-Smith, drove 30,000 kilometres from Casablanca to Capetown surfing all the way. They discovered an array of incredible waves and met amazing people, the result being the extraordinary surf travel film, Thirty Thousand.

Polishing Turds

"This time of the year all the sunny coast surfers begin to question their sanity! The blue bottles line the shore and the hot northerly winds blow relentless, plus coral spawn stinks out the town. With hope the Coral Sea will start to shine big blobs in the near future, but for now there's not much a sunny coast surfer can do other than make use of the slop on offer."

Mitch Adams and Ziggy Alberts do the polishing, Jack Dekort provides the photos and the woe-is-me words.

Easy Fiji

Even away from the marquee breaks like Restaurants and Cloudbreak Fiji is a worthwhile trip. And even when the swell isn't coming out of the sky it's great place to visit.

Swellnet photographer, Jack Dekort, gets into the tropical spirit, shooting in the clear water and mixing wth the locals at the market, during a trip to Fiji.

O'Neill Cold Water Classic Round 3 & 4

The three Australians into the final 8 of the O'Neill Cold Water Classic had varying responses to the situation:

"There's still a lot of work to do," said cucumber cool Parko

"I'm having fun," was Taj's regulation response

"I'm freaking out," said a startled Wilko in his highest result of the year.

The surf at Steamer Lane was inconsistent and weak so the comp was postponed a few times during the day. With the winner less than one day of competition away here's hoping we get some juice to decide the top knob.

First Drinks

A couple of weekends back Sydney lad, Tom Myers, who features in the first four photos of this gallery, celebrated his 21st birthday. Before the shenanigans began he Gezza Macallum, Steve Ahrens, Tom Salveson and others worked up a thirst at a tidy Northern Beaches bank. Not a bad way to celebrate.

All photos Matt Tennent, who's been updating his slick new website - check it here.

O'Neill Cold Water Classic Round 2

And it's off to Pipe we go!

By scraping through his Round 3 heat, Kelly Slater takes the title showdown to the last competition of the year - the Pipe Masters. And scrape Kelly did, a buzzer beating wave by opponent, Dusty Payne, saw him launch, spin, invert and land a critical air rev that looked like it'd knock the Great Bald One out of title contention. The judges thought otherwise and pulled Dusty up short in a result that would've had Gabriel Medina, his Dad, board caddy, travelling fluffer, and half the country of Brazil throwing chairs if it happened to him.

O'Neill Cold Water Classic Round 1

The webcast commentators made plenty of comparisons to small Bells on Day 1 of the O'Neill Cold Water Classic, and the slow, weak and wobbly waves at Steamer Lane certainly justified the comparison. Despite the lack of ramps a few surfers still scored big by boosting over the lip. Gabriel Medina, in fact, scored 9.43 for a one move wave that was made even more marvellous by virtue of being a left.
