Pitstop Hill - End of Season Report

Last call for drinks. The party is almost over. And boy what shindig 2012 has been.

Amped, freshly waxed, feeling good and ready to bust out some moves, groups of partygoers rocked on through the Pitstop Hill doors week after week. Some looking to relax, others looking to rage but whether they say it or not, all were looking to pick up and ride some beauties (and donʼt even get me started on the protection puns).

The Billabong Pipeline Masters Day 2

In the race for the title the dark horse has fallen by the wayside. Mick Fanning, who was a longshot for the crown and had to win the contest, failed to advance out of his Round 3 heat against Shane Dorian. Meanwhile, Parko and Slater have kept the vibe alive both progressing out of Rd 3 and Parko also winning his Rd 4 heat meaning he jumps straight to the Quarters.

The Billabong Pipeline Masters Day 1

It was a fitting opening day for the final comp of the year. The comp that will decide the 2012 title. Starting out undersized and inconsistent the north-west swell just kept getting bigger as the day progressed with semi regular sets breaking on second reef by the time the sun went down. Meanwhile, on first reef there were some wild barrels and acts of bravado as the back-22 surfers of the WT surfers threw caution to the wind and wildcards claimed a few scalps.

Tomorrow should resume with the swell similar size as late today before tapering throughout the day.

Pohnpei Surf Club - November Report

"This is so much more than just a surf trip," mused Joe, a powerful natural footer from Maryland on the East Coast of the USA. We were sitting on the beach drinking chilled coconuts at Ant Atoll, a small atoll seven miles off the west coast of Pohnpei. We had enjoyed a fun run of waves all week but this morning the swell had dropped off so Allois made the call for a day trip. In record time the boat had been loaded with fishing and snorkeling gear, a cool box full of coconuts and snacks and plenty of fuel.

Pipeline

There's less than a week to go till the waiting period for the Pipeline Masters - the final event on the ASP World Tour - begins. This year's Pipe Masters will be one for the ages with an epic World Title showdown between Parko and Kelly Slater already written into the script.

As keen followers we can only hope and pray that the contest is blessed with good surf to make the battle a fair one. And on that note, here is our early forecast for the Pipe Masters.

Vans World Cup of Surfing Day 3

Sunset is a tricky beast of a wave at the best of times. Put a light south-west wind on it and an inconsistent swell and it becomes a lottery, ten-point rides are followed by two-point back ups. Advancing out of a heat can seem like pure dumb luck, until, that is, you see the names of those advancing: Florence, Slater, Perrow, O'Brien. Evidently it's those who manage their luck out at Sunset.

Odds On Babylon

"It was the sort of session where you only caught a few waves, and you always felt like you were gonna snap your board."

So said Paul Stanton about the session that bore this long and throaty barrel. The swell was too straight and too big for the bank but Paul surfed it for five hours, patiently waiting for the ones that hit just right; the ones that allowed entry while also offering the chance at an exit, however slim that might be. Perfection may have it's place in surfing but these sort of sessions, when you must hunt and probe and play the odds, are arguably more satisfying.

Remote Atolls, Maldives

Pretty much everyone in the world, including all the surf travel companies, say that the best and most consistent waves in the Maldives are in North and South Male Atolls. I'm not questioning the quality, it's a good region. The thing is though, it's where all the boats are for most of the year due to a number of reasons. This is a collection of photos from where we go throughout the year and not one of these photos is from that main area.

Mid-size Sunset doesn't translate to video very well - looks slow and shifty, it's the sort of wave you need to feel the power. The webcast therefore can be a bit of a dull affair as we're used to death-or-glory heroics or small wave acrobatics.

Capture it in still photos, however, and the viewer gets a better appreciation of what the surfer is doing and feeling. Long driving arcs with plenty of wet rail, deep barrels and gnarly end section reos are best viewed in frozen moments when the gravity of the situation can be adequately surmised.

Mare Vida

"I'm done bro, I'm done."

With those few words Mike rose to his feet in ankle deep water and began the 10 minute walk towards shore, dodging thick back urchins and sharp reef outcrops while assessing his wounds. Even from behind the waves I could see a stream of blood run down his arm, and t-shirt turn red across his shoulders.

This was in the first hour of a 10 day shoot.
