Saquerama - Finals Day

Mitch Coleborn scored his first ASP win at the Quiksilver Saquerama Prime earlier today. Coleborn met France's Marc Lacomare, who despite scoring a perfect 10 late in the heat, couldn't get over the top of Coleborn. Coleborn took home $40,000 and 6,500 points, which places him at 14th on the ASP World Rankings.

Northern NSW

With the cooling weather the easterly trade wind belt off SE QLD and Northern NSW has ground to a halt, and with it the ever-reliable easterly trade swells. They've been replaced by a succession of long period highly directional south swells funnelling up the Tasman Sea. And rather than give an equal spread of waves - as the easterly swells are want to do - only those spots exposed to the south are receiving any quality.

Jack Dekort has been traipsing around Northern NSW, among the rain and gloom, seeking out said spots.

Under the sun, under the surface

Our man with the cam, Jack Dekort, is traipsing 'round the northern NSW coast and his fortunes are on the rise. His last batch of photos were moody black and white numbers, owing to the low cloud and gloom that was enveloping the coast. Today however, the sun shone briliantly and the water turned a fantastic shade of turquoise.

Time to don the Churchills, wrap the water housing, and deliver some polychromatic plates.

The Last Dance

Cenny Coast boys aren't too tough to dance. Just watch as they swing their hips and gyrate through these contorted local tunnels that change from a flat dancefloor to a bucking bull in half a beat. You wanna handle it? You gotta get your groove on.

Billabong Rio Pro: Finals Day

And so it came down to this, the last day in the Billabong Rio Pro waiting period. A waiting period that extended either side of a once-a-year Teahupoo swell that saw many epic waves get ridden - including some by Rio Pro wildcard, Ricardo Dos Santos, who threw caution, plus a few frequent flyer points, to the wind jetting from Rio to Tahiti and back in time for his heat.

Around Rio

We're currently in the fifth consecutive layday at the Billabong Rio Pro and if you haven't been filling in those idle hours with Julio Adler's 'Semi Pro Shakedown' then you my friend have been missing out. But perhaps you have your reasons for missing it and if so I'll take your word for it.

Ink in the Water

Louis Gervais ain't given to surfing on plain white sleds anymore than he's into plain white skin. Every surface is a canvas for the Gold Coast-based artist and heavily inked surfer.

Swellnet photographer, Jack Dekort, has been keeping company with Louis lately, surfing the corner at D'Bah and photographing his work. Also in frame is Jack's fellow Sunny Coaster, Levi Torrisi.

Indo a-go-go

It's May, the season has begun, so it's time to dance the Indo Tango. Mark Meddows and his mates recently did, tripping the light fantastic on the first charter for the Barrenjoey this year.

Photos taken by various crew and guests on the Barrenjoey.

The King of Nias

They call Raffiel Wau the King of Nias. He rode his first wave at Langundri Bay in 1980 at just six years old. In 1994 he represented Indonesia at an amateur world championships in Rio. These days he runs Raffiels Surf Camp, the friendliest surf camp on the point. Raff will sort you with bed and breakfast and he'll get you into the Lagundri lineup faster than any operator in Nias.

Raff, hitting the lip straight and true - not a problem.

Billabong Rio Pro: Round 1

The first round of the Billabong Rio Pro went down in thumping semi-closeouts at the primary venue of Postinho. The shifty, unpredictable lineup caused plenty of upsets with half the top seeds relegated to Round Two.

Pre Rio

Last night a storm front hit the Rio coast hammering the Billabong Rio Pro contest sites. Not surprisingly this morning the organisers have called a layday. Today's conditions are in stark contrast to yesterday when the Top 34 enjoyed a warm up in sunny, crisp three foot beachbreaks just ripe for a hi-fi attack.
