Touch down, take off

Ending his southern sojourn last week, photograher Jack Dekort touched down at home on the Sunny Coast in time for a boost session with Ziggy Alberts, Julian Wilson and Seb Wilson. He then darted down to the Goldy for a similar sesh with Mitch Parko and Brent Dorrington.

Russ and Tom in Panama

The ISA Games began in great waves at Santa Catalina, Panama, yesterday. I'll admit to not having a complete handle on what the ISA games are about. I know people surf in national teams and Ferdy, the head cheese at the ISA, has a wild dream to get surfing into the Olympics. That's about all that makes it onto my radar.

Maldives April Swell Report

This is possibly the easiest swell report I've ever had to write! We've been here at Hudhuranfushi in the Maldives for the last three weeks and can happily report there's been waves every day. As is typical for early season the waves have not been big but conditions have been incredible with sheet glass mornings, light offshore afternoons and golden, glassy evenings.

Drift: The Deleted Scenes

During the filming of Drift the cast and crew travelled to Grajagan where they intersected with a great swell. Guided by renowned Indo traveller, David Scard of World Surfaris, they were led through a dream sequence of crazy barrels - replete with crazy costumes.

Despite the incredible waves the scene ended up on the cutting room floor. A disappointment for some but devastating to Scardy as he was doubling for Sam Worthington and his bragging rights vanished with the snip of the editor's scissors.

Torquay: Flat one season, pumping the next

More photos from the Surf Coast's season of plenty. This time they're taken by the fella that sits two desks up, the man with the saltiest eyebrows in the business, Swellnet forecaster, Craig Brokensha.

Craig packed his boards and 'brows for a weekend jaunt south, scoring big on the Surf Coast. Everyone was very happy by the end of it.

'You snooze you lose.'

Now there's some advice Josh Ku will be quick to heed on his next surf trip. It may not score him more waves but it'll save him in other ways.

We last met Josh when he returned from Taiwan. The photos he showed us from that trip, and which we subsequently ran on Swellnet, had him surfing numerous lefthand pointbreaks, his long raven mane of Samson-esque hair flowing in the wind.

In flawless 4-5 foot barreling Lance's Right, Sumbawa's Oney Anwer bested Bali's Garut Widiarta to claim victory of the Mentawai Pro presented by Rip Curl, receiving the winner's check for Rp 25 million (approximately $2,500 USD) and a specially carved Mentawai boatsmens paddle as a unique souvenir to take home.

After one of the worst Summers in recent memory, a season when for many surfers only their SUP received any action, Victoria's Surf Coast has received a comeuppance. The first series of swells hit just prior to the Bells Beach Pro in March and continued for a week or two after. The most recent swells began last week continuing over the weekend just gone.

Made Darmayasa posted a 10 point score for a big and deep barrel, Putra Hermawan racked up the highest combined heat score of the day, a 17.60, and 16-year-old Sunshine Coaster Harry Bryant got one of the best contest waves of his life, scoring a 9.4 out of 10.
