URBNSURF Sydney to begin construction later this year

Swellnet Dispatch

It's been spoken of since the Tulla Tub was first proposed, but finally concrete plans for a Wavegarden pool in Sydney have been released.

The location is in Homebush - that much hasn't changed - and work will start later this year with a final completion date of summer 2022/23.

Sent with the press release were a bunch of renders, which were pretty much just a photo of Tulla overlaid on a vacant lot. But will the Sydney wave improve upon Melbourne?

Recent Wavegarden Cove's were unveiled in South Korea and Switzerland with the former featuring a noticeably longer wave than Tulla. The wave-making apparatus at Tullamarine employs 46 water-displacing modules, while the South Korean pool has 56.

So what size will Sydney be?

Swellnet has reached out to URBNSURF for the answer but is yet to hear back.

URBNSURF Sydney will be open seven days. 6am to 10pm weekdays and till midnight on Friday and Saturday.

I hope the younger and new generations increasingly embrace and patronise the predictable perfection of these tubs.

And increasingly leave the wild world stuff to the barnacle encrusted survivors from last century :)

Would you consider surfing the Tulla tub after say a flat spell of 2 weeks at your amazing location?...or perhaps a quick pre dawn early before getting on the tools for the day? ...or maybe surfing after dark on the way home from the office? (just suggesting there's a place for the pool in your surfing life...and I'll bet you're curious to give it a whirl)

Nias became world famous for being 7 seconds long...

I was sceptical about pools till I finally jumped in at Tulla a few weeks ago.
Me, my kids, and all the crew we went there with were blown away.
Where else can you get a hassle free wave every five minutes? Good waves too!
I did the Turbo session - where it barrels- got more barrels in an hour than in the last five years on the sunshine coast!!! and again, no one hassling me in the line up. So good!
Anyway, all the best to you all!
We surf for fun and enjoyment, wherever we may find that. I will be happy to put my kids and me in a "tub" as much as possible in coming years. Stoked technology is giving us this opportunity.

Been 3 times in the last 6 months or so. The last time was the entree for a big night in the city so we had dinner and a few drinks there.
I’d do that again, but the novelty of just going up there for session then heading home has worn off

Totally agree Goofyfoot. I was fortunate to surf it at opening for half a day. Returned recently and it felt Like more of a novelty than actual surfing fun. I personally struggle to adapt as the short punch is very different to Vicco walls. Thats said, I can see that it would be a great place for a expectations-free, on the beers kinda surf or squeezing between work for city dwellers. Everybody should try it for themselves I suppose. BTW - the water is super reactive to relative temperature and fucken freezing in winter. Im talking UK cold.

Does anyone think that one day there will be a crew of locals at these places who will form a boardriders club and compete at the Nudie boardriders battles? They would probably be quite polite in the surf having spent their time following the strict etiquette of wave pools.
What would they be called?

There also has to be a role for a young and naive product of this wave pool to then go on to surf against the top pros a la “North Shore” - the superb film of the late 80s. Jeremy Flores or Medina could play the villain of Lance Burkhart played by Laird in the original.

Hey Hall of Lame, UrbnSurf Boardriders Club has already been established at the Tulla' tub and is registered with Surfing Vic. It's full of die-hard "locals" who have taken out membership and surf there pretty much all the time. I'm sure Nudie, etc. is on their radar (I'm not a member, I just surf there when the hip-pocket can afford it). One thing about that place is the wave consistency really does allow you to work on those turns, so keep your eye out for them.

Im a long term Surfcoast resident and had my first (and only) session at the tub a couple of months ago. (Advanced setting)

Was a bit of fun/novelty but I don't reckon I'll bother again. Too far, too expensive, no real punch and too claustrophobic. Each to their own and I fully get it from the point of view of time poor crew who don't live near the surf.

How far from the surf in reality is Homebush for you Sydney crew? Google maps says about 30-40 mins, would anyone fight the traffic and go from the coast or would this be for the western suburbs crew?

Will be interesting to see how it goes. Melb would have way, way less surfers per capita, so should be busy right?

stunet Tuesday, 18 May 2021 at 7:27am

I think it'll be busy. Very easy reach from almost all the Northern Beaches, and a moderate drive from everywhere else.

For the occasional novelty, it's even within reach of the Cenny Coast and the Illawarra. It's a huge catchment it's pulling from.

I wonder how cold it'll get in winter. Obvs not as bad as Tulla, which aparently hits single digits, but if it levels out at, say, mid-teens, then year round surfing is possible,

It's not far from Bondi. Once the Westconnex is fully finished it'll be a smooth ride out there. The tolls will add up but that's life going anywhere in Sydney.

I'd do it regularly for night sessions or earlies. I've surfed the Melbourne pool many times and love the experience. So much fun.

The crowds don't seem to matter because everyone gets their chance. No hassling. Just book in and get barrelled. Good to mix it up with surfing in the ocean. Always feel a noticeable improvement in my ocean surfing after a few hours in the pool.

batfink's picture
batfink's picture
batfink Wednesday, 19 May 2021 at 5:22pm

Much more captivating for the western suburbs crew I would say Stok. The amount they would save on tolls going all the way to the coast would pay half their time in the tub.

Don’t know about Stu’s comment about it being accessible to the northern beaches crew. Nothing in Sydney is accessible to the northern beaches, except the northern beaches.

Novelty crew from cenny coast, Illawarra and Newcastle but I wouldn’t expect repeat business from them. Anyone from Illawarra or Newie will be left thinking how good their local beaches are.

Don’t know for myself, maybe a novelty event, during school times and tradie working hours, but nobody in Sydney seems to work any more based on surf numbers in the water during the week.

Hey Blowin, can you expand on that throwaway line.? I live in the burbs because i work in the western suburbs and its too far to drive to work everyday if i live near the sea. I train at Granville pool most days thru the cooler months and i am unaware of the segregated swim sesssions. The multi cultural aspect of Sydney's western suburbs is wonderful and vibrant and makes the northern beaches a cultural desert in comparison. Apart from the surf culture there is very little to compare. I still live and breathe to surf as much as can but i feel grateful for the choices i have.

Yeah Gary, a deliberately provocative throw away line from blowin. One pool in Auburn for 3 hours a week, and an ocean pool at Coogee for women. That’s the extent of it.

Yes, most of Sydney is a great melting pot, but not the northern beaches so much, and not Scomo territory in the Shire. They are like foreign places to the rest of Sydney, and that includes the very multi-cultural eastern suburbs.

Can't see myself using it. An hour drive on a good day from the Northern Beaches, plus $90 or so for an hour plus an hour drive back, plus changing etc, it's a minimum 4 hour commitment.

If I lived out western Sydney and surfed, I'd buy a membership there instead of a gym but not fussed based on where I live.

As an aside, the Melbourne booking system sucks balls, water significantly colder than the ocean, ice cream head aches in May, not sure how bad it would be in July or August.

Re: the water temp, difference I see is most surfers in Vic are probably already kitted out for genuine cold water surfing before the pool came along, with 4/3 or 5/4 wetties, boots, gloves, hoods etc so for me it wasn't as big an adjustment and certainly not a deterrent to heading along. I surfed it a couple of times pre-lockdown #2 in early July, water was 8-9 degrees and with the right gear it really wasn't an issue.

That all said, some solar panels installed eventually to take the sting out of it wouldn't hurt, but either way doesn't fuss me too much, if it means raising the prices then don't do it. They already raised it about 10% after the first year for advanced, I'd be hoping annual increases don't become a thing!

Glad I did it but I'm not hanging out to go back. Each to their own but for me there's something strange about the wave. Good point regarding the clear water and white bottom/walls.

I reckon there'd be plenty of scope to sex it up a bit by painting the bottom of the pool to resemble a coral reef and the walls could have a steamy, tropical vista mural. Plastic palm trees with speakers blasting out hip-hop.

Mate unless you're on the wim hof/ice bath trip, or have a significant layer of extra insulation (i.e. you're a fatty fat fat) you'll freeze in a 3/2.

Best bet would be to hire a 4mm or 5mm.

The one thing the pool has going for it is you don't really need to duckdive, and if you're careful enough you can get through a session without putting your head underwater.

Stu's Picture speaks a 1,000 words...& Yes the waves will be bigger as picture shows in many ways.
tbb will share those details below...

Also note all Oz Wave Pool Players are hooking up Surf Lodge Turnstyle combos.

As submissions are open we'll get the crew hooked up with Urbnsurf / 2 story Surf Lodge Plans.
{ NSW Major Projects } -
Sydney Olympic Park (Modification) Water Surf Facility ( Original Approved Dec 2017)
SOPA as with Tulla Precinct is Crown Land...(Overrides Council Bylaws & Local's Pitchforks.)
Prepare Mod Report > Arrange - *Exhibition > Collate & Respond Submissions > Assessment > Recommendation > Determination
13th May > (*Exhibition- Submissions) > 25th May ( Need to Log into NSW Govt )

Plans re: #1 / #4 / #5 / #6 ( Pool Sketches )
Plans re: # 7 (Detail for all Buildings / Layout -20 pages)
Plans re: # 8 (Rock Pool Specs + Landscape Detail -20 pages)
Statement of Support shows changes...( 50 pages )

There is no Pool / Water detail in this modification (Mostly Double Story / Rock Pools / Gigs)
Oddly the past / original plans access was redirected (Bumped) to these new plans...
So tbb can no longer share the secret Water Filtration detail...(Bummer)...try again later.

tbb promised to show clues in Stu's photo that reveals Ramping of Waves.
The photo shows major height ramps to Tulla Tub but all are in proportion. (Hence it looks the same!)
At a glance all Wave Cove designs look similar but each have evolved to shape bigger waves.

Here's the Oz Wave Cove Evolution
WA - No console waves peel from centre bank needing wider angles (extra Water / Land costs)
Sydney - "Low-set" Wave Machine > no Console (See how waves instantly fade) - Not Good!)
Tulla Tub - Low set Machine / Lean over walls tapering down by mid pool with crossover console wash.
New Sydney Design - 2x Height Machine /Walls / Console > No taper (re: All height is Doubled)

Major Change being the bulking up of height & width of entire wall build.
Take a closer look at ( Lower Right ) Gig Staging area & see 3x3m wall (Ain't no one leaning over that!)
Shipping Containers are 2.6m high so Drop from Machine edge to water is 3m+ (Double Tulla 1.5m)
Check Machine is of equal raised Height to walls ... Massive 3m drop from wall to water surface...
Centre Console has no step down & continues same height affording bigger (2-2.5m) face waves.
As said...it's all in proportion so it's hard to notice any change...

Tulla runs 1.5m swell over low walls... Sydney can contain an extra 1m swell (No wet gig gear...too easy)

Crew can see that Sydney has bulked up & filled out to take on some mighty beasts.

Should eliminate cross belching of Roary's Dueling Beasties.
Recall the original Beast would bellow into the Left line-up shutting it down.
Crew can see there is no chance of cross pollination of arch enemy Natural / Goof lineups
Centre Console is now well "High'n'Dry" for Lifeguard Duty or Photographers but with 360*clear view.

Urbnsurf can harness this contained back wash to ramp each pool & save on power.
They can do this by timing the Wave Train to scoop backwash to Ramp height (As they do now!)
What we see are 2 self contained bulky HD wave Dishes absorbing & ramping power.
That's no slip of the pen...to double ramp imposing height & girth perimeters...reckon it could be on!

Also consider that Willy Wonka is shootin' barrels with the Cooly Kidz...that are powering up!
Come 2023 Each company will need to pit Lodges / Brews / Barrels in cocooned combo packs
Qldurrz > Sunny / Goldie & Surf Lakes all vowed to ramp as big as the can...so Sydney Pair must also.
Town ain't big enough for 4/5/6 players so they gotta rollout some seriously beastly barrels.
As said...We can see here that Sydney Wave Garden is gearing up for the barrel fest...bring it!

Sydney cranks for real waves anyway.
Perth would be ideal ! If the wave responds like a real wave unlike Kelly’s pool... very boring repetitive comp perfection with a weird kind of should response. The tub looks more like a real wave

Gut feeling. The modules will remain the same as Tulla at 46, at best.
They likely don't want to make one inferior to the other, just a cookie cut.
The delayed response is possibly telling.
I wouldn't bother visiting if its the same as Tulla, the extra 10+ x modules add a whole new dimension to it.

Yeah, that South Korea one looks like much better value for money. Legit great waves.

I agree on the Sydney one. Will be same or very similar to Tulla.

Few things about the South Korea pool:

Heating is via waste heat from a nearby source (not sure if it's industrial, or from a building, but they aint paying to heat it).

The pool was set up as a demonstrative pool, and the barrel settings are not open to public.

Also, don't be too overhyped by the extra modules, sure it looks good in the promo's, but the reality probably is it's even more backwashy and all over the shop than the Tullatub.

Tulla has an additional mode called Beast+(plus) which the bodyboarders got to ride at an exclusive session. Not available to the pubic I think. Same mode in Korea would be interesting.

Lots of examples out there for heating large bodies of water using just the sun.
A combination of technologies would be the go.
Evacuated tubes look very efficient.
As are solar thermal dirt batteries, simply install pipes in every concrete pathway prior to pouring concrete and every area the sun shines on, such as the car park, if the intention is to pave a new one.

OK, and we got ourselves an answer about length of ride in Sydney.

Gonna be the same as Melbourne, so 46 modules long for an approximate 16 second ride.

Long wait for a simple answer, but at least we now know.

Wavegarden business model prides remediating Toxic Waste Dumps.
tbb is neither saluting or criticizing wot NSW EPA approves.

Sydney Urbnsurf is being developed at Haslams Reach North Landfill @ Sydney Olympic Park.
During Sydney Olympics around 20m Toxic waste was bunted onto Haslams Reach Landfill site!
Basically tarred over it for Olympic Carpark...as ya do!
There it sat capped with 1m clay & iced in tar frozen in time as popular as a Nuke Fallout zone.

23 Jan 2009 EPA (1997) Map of Haslams Reach North Landfill [Proposed Wavegarden Site]
SOPA must maintain monitoring of the Toxic Site [ Click Attached Map ]

EPA 20 Oct 2016 [ Sydney Olympic Park Master Plan Review 2030 ]
Haslams Reach North Landfill...
No works can be carried out to remove 20m high Waste mountain without EPA Site approval.
EPA order s28 CLM Act...if deemed less risk then SEPP 55 rules apply.
No underground Carpark type excavation due to ongoing live gases...
Haslams Reach development requires approved remediation plan + EPA onsite [box tick]

Dec 2017 Sydney Olympic Park Wavepool is approved / declared NSW State significant Development

July 2020 Sydney Olympic Park Metro Station [ State Significant Over ride ]
Master Plan P 14 : All can clearly see Wavepool is rezoned State Significant Primary Retail Precinct
Noting...ALL 10 Oz leading Supermarkets / Department Stores are Zoned Secondary to Wavepool.
Seems impossible...All gotta move mountains of Toxic shit to prioritize a mandated WavePool...Huh!
Rail Plans : Parramatta LR 2 =[Wavepool precinct]= Sydney Olympic Park Metro
In short...Premier can rezone Toxic Waste as Premium Rail Central Hub.
tbb knows this coz his local State Significant Train Station is built on former Asbestos Dump...
Cost 4x more to clear the tip site due to leaching...(nsw EPA rule ya can now do that under cover of darkness!)

24 Feb 2023 EPA Departmental Letter in regards to State Significant Wavepool Rail Central
Site falls within 400-500m from residents!
Motion for round the clock a/h + Sundays Remediation works
[No Noise Impact assessment ] (Now in Over-ride!)
Needs EPA site audit and tick as recreational facility is more sensitive than underground carpark.

Repeating NSW EPA approved handling of highest Volume Toxic Contaminants thru darkest hours.
The least safest procedure...for known largest stockpile
No idea what Asbestos goes where or over whom at any hour with least observation.
Wavepool Toxic Waste removal goes against EPA safest handling procedure

Hey Boss : "Where can we dispose (remediate) wave pools of Asbestos under the cover of darkness?"

2hrs ago : Largest ever NSW EPA Outbreak Crisis...
Greenlife say that EPA recently tested their mulch often & signed off on it!
Reckon that 100x pranksters must be randomly contaminating mulch after their drop offs! Sorted?
(Just Now) EPA openly state they're concerned with Mulch from March 2023-Dec 2023...(Cough!)
Holy shit tbb...that times in perfectly to (above) Wavepool during EPA Lawless highest risk removal.
Reckon EPA will not wanna openly share any in-house docs of Cowboy Asbestos Removal ...(Above)

News : [ West Sydney Schools, parks & Rail Hubs are drowning in Olympic sized asbestos crisis ]
Contaminated Wavepool LR precinct times with contaminated Parramatta LR precinct does it not?
EPA stamp risk removal of Asbestos from New Rail Hub - Asbestos found at established Stations.
Reminding NSW EPA sign off & Govt Guards patrol these stations + School sites

NSW State significant Asbestos removal & remediation on neighbouring State significant Rail Projects.
Again likely just another same in-house inter departmental Asbestos contamination coincidence!
Contamination Map clocks every other suburb surrounding innocent #1 Toxic Olympic Park.

Costello's Olympic Park Domain Oasis is now the only safe site with record Residential Sales growth!
Not bad work if ya can rort it!

June 2023 :
Costello's SMH : "Key Contaminated Sites be excellent for housing if Govt commit to costly remediation."

Sept 2023 (Costello's Domain) "Sydney Olympic Park Sales Pitch Perfect"
Ghost town transformed (2021 Pop 4,848 > 2030 Pop 23,500)
Yes! Urbnsurf as the anchor...now the only clean safe EPA approved neighbourhood in Sydney!

Court Ruling :
"Recommend NSW Premier's Cardigans be knitted from Asbestos fibre to fend off accusations!"

Ask why Kooks keep taking the Toxic Wavepool crab-pot bait...
Kook : "Why ya all look at me like that...Wot! Is this one of them Blue Sky Wave Pools...Oh! FFS!"
>>> I'm a kook! Get me outta here!

Sure bet NSW Premier has many equally State significant mountains of Waste to shift as we sleep...
Only this one times in perfectly to tick all the boxes across the Town...wot are the odds of that!
Can't help but think everyone knows the origin of mulch & why it's spreading so fast all around here.
Ask! What other Waste site has that much asbestos coming out of it to fuel a Blue Sky outbreak!
Hate to think EPA stamped another 24/7 State Significant Asbestos Drive Thru.

Message to Gromz : "How Pros sell a toxic Dump as an Oasis by tossin' their shit over your Town!"

Final Word by Costello : "Nearly half of Sydney Olympic Park is zoned for Environmental Conservation.
What this means for those lucky enough to live nearby is an oasis in the middle of a City, with forests, wetlands and abundant green corridors!"

Another supa-stoked Costello Home Buyer :
"I like that Sydney Olympic Park Toxic Oasis don't cordon off their Playgrounds...feels healthier here...Cough!"

NSW [L] Gold Standard Whiteshoe Shuffle...Goldie brigade be droolin' over Costello's Gold Mine!

Not sure how this works but it's nearest tbb can get to Toxic tenders!

Schools Evacuated...EPA are up to their necks by stamping this...got caught out!
No way can any Mob get this level access to Govt Hospitals / Rail / Schools without Signing off!
Govt don't do this high cost fear factor over garden beds unless they signed off on it...Well!

This Doc companions the above EPA Site Remediation Memo...

tbb grew up in an era where pretty near all Sports Facilities topped off Toxic Tips.
The fact that Urbnsurf are remediating Asbestos should not come as a shock!
Wavegarden have remediated Toxic sites before & pride themselves for doing such.

Given that NSW EPA signed off on large amounts to be removed 24/7 from this site...Well!
Asbestos is popping up all about West Sydney with NSW EPA Targeting Loads from same timeline.
Only fair we share Urbnsurf Asbestos Remediation Procedure.

Urbnsurf Sydney EIS for State Significant Development (SDD 7942)

Page 42/78
[5.3.5] State Environmental Planning Policy No.55 _Remediation of Land
(SEPP 55) Clause 7 Provides the following...
1 (a)(b)(c) (Concise)
Is Satisfied that Contaminated Land is remediated to be made suitable for purpose of development.
Enviro Site Investigation has been carried out by.....X...& provides Attachment 11...(Concludes)

Asbestos (Dust) represents potential risk to Workers + Nearby Site users or Passers-by!

Redevelopment Asbestos Impact is not considered to represent a risk to future site users...
As site is Covered by Structures...

Ok now we're getting more specific in regard to Asbestos...these are directives...

In Landscaped Areas some management may be required to control Risk in event of minor excavation!

It's considered the site is suitable for it's current zoning (Public Recreation Works) and proposed (Recreational Land Use) provided that the following are undertaken...

* "The Impacts identified are 'Remediated prior to construction works by excavation and removal' to a (Suitably Licensed Landfill), or... (The Asbestos-Impacted Soil) is managed during construction in accordance with a (Construction Environmental Management Plan) CEMP and after redevelopment, a longer-term (Environmental Management Plan) may be developed for the site to Prevent Future Exposure!"

Having regard to the matters raised in the above mentioned report, it is considered that the site is suitable to be used for the proposed use subject to compliance with the recommendations of the Environmental Site Investigation!
Pages 65/66 Reiterate Above
Pages 47-49 Deal with Metro / Parra Light Rail Corridor + Noise Works...

Merely civic duty from a Grom that Played Footy on Asbestos Tips & worked 25 years with it!
This Urbnsurf Doc is freely available as one expects...All say Aye!
Sure, it may fit into the bigger picture but so too every West Sydney Asbestos Site Works & Rail Line!

Point is...Fed Pollies NSW State Significant Future Fund Asbestos Remediation is a Gravy Train.
It's on a Roll #1 Oz project > Ain't no stoppin' it...just strap yerselves in & suck it up...(Cough!)
Sure...Let's be pretty about if ya reckon it helps!

Urbnsurf are kindly airing their Dirty Laundry...that's how to read this!

Different shades of Blue Sky Grey Asbestos...sooner we see the back of Pollies dust storm the better!

PS : Urbnsurf's cruel ban on Urban Surfing mops up it's own hot mess!
Olympic Athletic Surfing Ideal is banned > Urbnsurf Mandate all users being strapped to Toxic Slabs.
Hardly think Wavepool Bullies 'd notice if they Wax up Slabs of Fibreglass or Blue Sky hire boards!
Choose yer poison...
Kook : 'Anything but that Toxic Petro Chem Slab...luv to give that Blue Sky board a go...(Be our guest!)

Can go scale the top of that Blue Sky spectator mound to call me in..."Cough! Go...Cough!..for it!"
This one of them Retro Spectator Mounds...no need to dig up the past tbb...just roll with it!

[3:20] Above Construction Vid : See that Big Orange hill hiding in plain sight! OMG!

Grom : "Mum why is that Pro Spectator Mound Covered in Bright Orange Asbestos Safety Wrap!"
Mum : "Shut Up & eat yer Mulch!"

Promo yer bright Orange Asbestos Wrapped Mound in the Vid...Like never expected that.
Punters reckon these Wavepool Boys can sell anything...they just did!
Can read in the Doc that alot of 2m cutting of previous fill will remain onsite & be reused!
+ 5.7.2 (2 Feb 2017) SOPA Panel supported the use of Sustainable material for Spectator Berm
Seriously! Never caught onto that until after the Future Fund Gravy train spilt it's greedy gutz!
tbb Salutes the Wavepool guy for having the decency to cover up his sustainable Berm! All say Aye!
