URBNSURF Sydney to begin construction later this year
It's been spoken of since the Tulla Tub was first proposed, but finally concrete plans for a Wavegarden pool in Sydney have been released.
The location is in Homebush - that much hasn't changed - and work will start later this year with a final completion date of summer 2022/23.
Sent with the press release were a bunch of renders, which were pretty much just a photo of Tulla overlaid on a vacant lot. But will the Sydney wave improve upon Melbourne?
Recent Wavegarden Cove's were unveiled in South Korea and Switzerland with the former featuring a noticeably longer wave than Tulla. The wave-making apparatus at Tullamarine employs 46 water-displacing modules, while the South Korean pool has 56.
So what size will Sydney be?
Swellnet has reached out to URBNSURF for the answer but is yet to hear back.
URBNSURF Sydney will be open seven days. 6am to 10pm weekdays and till midnight on Friday and Saturday.

I hope the younger and new generations increasingly embrace and patronise the predictable perfection of these tubs.
And increasingly leave the wild world stuff to the barnacle encrusted survivors from last century :)
I hope its a lot better than Tulla, tulla pool looks pretty boring to me...theres way better waves where i live.
Would you consider surfing the Tulla tub after say a flat spell of 2 weeks at your amazing location?...or perhaps a quick pre dawn early before getting on the tools for the day? ...or maybe surfing after dark on the way home from the office? (just suggesting there's a place for the pool in your surfing life...and I'll bet you're curious to give it a whirl)
yeah im curious but the tube is at most 3 seconds long...zzzzz
Nias became world famous for being 7 seconds long...
I was sceptical about pools till I finally jumped in at Tulla a few weeks ago.
Me, my kids, and all the crew we went there with were blown away.
Where else can you get a hassle free wave every five minutes? Good waves too!
I did the Turbo session - where it barrels- got more barrels in an hour than in the last five years on the sunshine coast!!! and again, no one hassling me in the line up. So good!
Anyway, all the best to you all!
We surf for fun and enjoyment, wherever we may find that. I will be happy to put my kids and me in a "tub" as much as possible in coming years. Stoked technology is giving us this opportunity.
no, not paying to surf in chlorine thanks
Been 3 times in the last 6 months or so. The last time was the entree for a big night in the city so we had dinner and a few drinks there.
I’d do that again, but the novelty of just going up there for session then heading home has worn off
Totally agree Goofyfoot. I was fortunate to surf it at opening for half a day. Returned recently and it felt Like more of a novelty than actual surfing fun. I personally struggle to adapt as the short punch is very different to Vicco walls. Thats said, I can see that it would be a great place for a expectations-free, on the beers kinda surf or squeezing between work for city dwellers. Everybody should try it for themselves I suppose. BTW - the water is super reactive to relative temperature and fucken freezing in winter. Im talking UK cold.
Does anyone think that one day there will be a crew of locals at these places who will form a boardriders club and compete at the Nudie boardriders battles? They would probably be quite polite in the surf having spent their time following the strict etiquette of wave pools.
What would they be called?
Tullatubbies.
*fairy clap*
Haha.
Gold!
There also has to be a role for a young and naive product of this wave pool to then go on to surf against the top pros a la “North Shore” - the superb film of the late 80s. Jeremy Flores or Medina could play the villain of Lance Burkhart played by Laird in the original.
Brilliant! A quick wit!
Board riders club is firing up in the next few months ... so stay tuned.
ooh that sounds about as exciting as a stand-up paddle boogie board!
Haha ... Ah now that is something I'd like to see.

Gigs are also a Thing...Sydney has full on Gig access drop/turn area.
Hey Hall of Lame, UrbnSurf Boardriders Club has already been established at the Tulla' tub and is registered with Surfing Vic. It's full of die-hard "locals" who have taken out membership and surf there pretty much all the time. I'm sure Nudie, etc. is on their radar (I'm not a member, I just surf there when the hip-pocket can afford it). One thing about that place is the wave consistency really does allow you to work on those turns, so keep your eye out for them.
Im a long term Surfcoast resident and had my first (and only) session at the tub a couple of months ago. (Advanced setting)
Was a bit of fun/novelty but I don't reckon I'll bother again. Too far, too expensive, no real punch and too claustrophobic. Each to their own and I fully get it from the point of view of time poor crew who don't live near the surf.
Yeah if I lived in town I’d hit it up more for sure, just to get a fix until the ocean.
At least it throws a tube though!
How far from the surf in reality is Homebush for you Sydney crew? Google maps says about 30-40 mins, would anyone fight the traffic and go from the coast or would this be for the western suburbs crew?
Will be interesting to see how it goes. Melb would have way, way less surfers per capita, so should be busy right?
Plenty of torquay crew hit tulla so yes, I'm sure even more coastal sydney crew will hit homebush.
I think it'll be busy. Very easy reach from almost all the Northern Beaches, and a moderate drive from everywhere else.
For the occasional novelty, it's even within reach of the Cenny Coast and the Illawarra. It's a huge catchment it's pulling from.
I wonder how cold it'll get in winter. Obvs not as bad as Tulla, which aparently hits single digits, but if it levels out at, say, mid-teens, then year round surfing is possible,
i'd certainly have my arm twisted to come down from Newcastle
I surfed tulla in July last year and was coldest water I’ve ever felt. I was still a little chilly in my 5mm, hood and booties
Yep, and its not unusual for crew from all those areas to head to homebush for a footy game either.
I couldn't imagine doing the drive on the regular, but during a long winter flat spell, or sh*tty spring, you'd be mad to turn your nose up at it (energy use/emissions questions aside)...
It's not far from Bondi. Once the Westconnex is fully finished it'll be a smooth ride out there. The tolls will add up but that's life going anywhere in Sydney.
I'd do it regularly for night sessions or earlies. I've surfed the Melbourne pool many times and love the experience. So much fun.
The crowds don't seem to matter because everyone gets their chance. No hassling. Just book in and get barrelled. Good to mix it up with surfing in the ocean. Always feel a noticeable improvement in my ocean surfing after a few hours in the pool.
Much more captivating for the western suburbs crew I would say Stok. The amount they would save on tolls going all the way to the coast would pay half their time in the tub.
Don’t know about Stu’s comment about it being accessible to the northern beaches crew. Nothing in Sydney is accessible to the northern beaches, except the northern beaches.
Novelty crew from cenny coast, Illawarra and Newcastle but I wouldn’t expect repeat business from them. Anyone from Illawarra or Newie will be left thinking how good their local beaches are.
Don’t know for myself, maybe a novelty event, during school times and tradie working hours, but nobody in Sydney seems to work any more based on surf numbers in the water during the week.
It would feel ridiculous packing the board and heading to west Sydney for a surf.. but really keen to have go .. only heard good feedback on vics wave pool.. got to be better than some of the groveling shit surfs I had over decades.. why not
And that's the feeling of driving from Torquay to Tulla for a surf. It seems ridiculous. You can get away with it on the way up because you sort of feel like you might be heading to Tulla for a flight to the Ments, but the way home is a bit hard on the synapses.
probably have more success in sydney with a better climate and there are plenty of surfers who live out in the burbs who havent the time to drive to the coast........
Potentially Australia’s most multicultural surf spot?
Wonder if it’ll require gender segregated bathing like some of the other pools out in Western Sydney?
Hey Blowin, can you expand on that throwaway line.? I live in the burbs because i work in the western suburbs and its too far to drive to work everyday if i live near the sea. I train at Granville pool most days thru the cooler months and i am unaware of the segregated swim sesssions. The multi cultural aspect of Sydney's western suburbs is wonderful and vibrant and makes the northern beaches a cultural desert in comparison. Apart from the surf culture there is very little to compare. I still live and breathe to surf as much as can but i feel grateful for the choices i have.
https://www.mamamia.com.au/women-only-pool-sydney/
Yeah Gary, a deliberately provocative throw away line from blowin. One pool in Auburn for 3 hours a week, and an ocean pool at Coogee for women. That’s the extent of it.
Yes, most of Sydney is a great melting pot, but not the northern beaches so much, and not Scomo territory in the Shire. They are like foreign places to the rest of Sydney, and that includes the very multi-cultural eastern suburbs.
Yea - cheap throw away barb at Islamic cultures there Blowin. Best keep the ignorance out of this forum and keep it fun and on topic hey?
Had my first go in the tub last Friday with my grom. I loved it, super fun with a good bunch of crew all frothing. My only advice (other than bigger and longer of course) is FFS heat the pool!! All that coin spent and its less than 14 degrees? I'll go back next time I'm down south, but not in the winter.
Yes indeed, Thursday morning it was fresh as. Performance inhibiting....not that it takes much to inhibit my performance...Surely they could get it to just tepid temps to take a bit of chill off....it doesnt need to be bath like..
Was reading about the South Korean Wavegarden and they have a water temp of 20 degrees in the middle of winter, it was mentioned that the current temp of the Melbourne pool is around 13 degrees .
Surely the designers of the Homebush pool will incorporate a solar water heating system.
Almost 24 hrs and no repsonse from URBNSURF RE the length of the wave.
Not sure why everyone is whining about the water temp of the pool.
People pay big money for ice baths. Think how inflamed your muscles would be after catching 20 chest high waves if the water wasn’t cold enough to send a polar bear’s testicles into its stomach.
If and when this covid madness dies down, when I return home I usually fly into Sydney. I reckon I'd head out there to try it out for sure especially if you could rent all the gear you need.
edit: come to think of it, the pool should be ready just in time for when we're able to freely travel from OS.
Be careful with the rental option mate. If you blow the take off - which will happen on the first few - your board will inevitably hit the wall. They charge $90 extra for any rail shatters...
I'll pay cash in advance and do a runner.
But thanks for the heads-up.
Can't see myself using it. An hour drive on a good day from the Northern Beaches, plus $90 or so for an hour plus an hour drive back, plus changing etc, it's a minimum 4 hour commitment.
If I lived out western Sydney and surfed, I'd buy a membership there instead of a gym but not fussed based on where I live.
As an aside, the Melbourne booking system sucks balls, water significantly colder than the ocean, ice cream head aches in May, not sure how bad it would be in July or August.
Re: the water temp, difference I see is most surfers in Vic are probably already kitted out for genuine cold water surfing before the pool came along, with 4/3 or 5/4 wetties, boots, gloves, hoods etc so for me it wasn't as big an adjustment and certainly not a deterrent to heading along. I surfed it a couple of times pre-lockdown #2 in early July, water was 8-9 degrees and with the right gear it really wasn't an issue.
That all said, some solar panels installed eventually to take the sting out of it wouldn't hurt, but either way doesn't fuss me too much, if it means raising the prices then don't do it. They already raised it about 10% after the first year for advanced, I'd be hoping annual increases don't become a thing!
“I’d be hoping annual increases don’t become a thing.”
Yeh look wishful thinking to some extent, but 10% annual increases will very quickly price many out, unless they are happy with that. Thankful I now live by the coast so haven't actually been back to urbnsurf for a few months now. Was dropping too much coin to satisfy my surf needs that's for sure!
Ohh wow, $80 per hour or so to surf 2ft grovel in 8 degree water. You could not pay me to surf there (although I do have access to lots of waves in a warm climate.)
.
Imagine how expensive it would be if you had to pay for heating though.
Not to mention the carbon footprint? Yikes! Burning fossil fuels so we dont have to suffer the hardship of being uncomfortable as we indulge in a "pointless and beautiful" luxury....mmmmm...humans hey?
Solar?
Why Homebush? Its smack bang/centre in the middle of Australia's most populous city
Its a very difficult place to get to from anywhere in Sydney, except if you live in Homebush/Parammatta.
Pretty straightforward from anywhere west of Homebush, harder from east.
Went to the pool for the first time last week, 3 advanced sessions, rights, lefts & then rights under lights. Water was absolutely freezing but we had fun nonetheless. Glad I did it but I'm not hanging out to go back. Each to their own but for me there's something strange about the wave. It sure packs some punch but the super clear water with white bottom made it tough to judge. That said, the barrel mode is fun when you get it right. 7/10
Good point regarding the clear water and white bottom/walls.
I reckon there'd be plenty of scope to sex it up a bit by painting the bottom of the pool to resemble a coral reef and the walls could have a steamy, tropical vista mural. Plastic palm trees with speakers blasting out hip-hop.
My idea of heaven.
So far no advertising anywhere at Tulla - Those walls were made for it.
And toughen up chaps
Novelty effect is dead for me, and fuck that noise getting in a thick steamer to pay to surf it.
I'm still curious about Yeppoon and the tropical/regional location is very much more enticing for me than a city scape.
If that opens to the public I'll take a trip.
Wait till a couple of Saltys take up residence in the pond, that'd make it interesting.
Come to think of it, stock it with Barra and you could flick a few lures afterwards.
The Fitzroy river Barra fishing is actually really good nowadays.
so the fantasy is a metre-y and some splash and giggle in the Yepoon tub.
few rum and cokes later on.
Reckon there's more of a risk of a waterbourne disease/parasite in the tropics?
probably.
assuming they will chlorinate the water?
Been wondering about that
20 Olympic pools worth of water thats a huge amount to Filter / Chlorinate
Been wondering about that
20 Olympic pools worth of water thats a huge amount to Filter / Chlorinate
They'd have to, but it's one of those things which is prone to human error. Especially after what happened to that poor bloke at Waco.
chortle
Seems alot of you have Tub experience. Im heading to Melbourne in Mid June. Only have a 3/2mm steamer, should I bother having a crack or will my body freeze, arms seize and I'll be dropping $100 for no waves and an icecream headache?
Get yourself a 4-3mm wetsuit,so comfortable in mid winter on NSW south coast, worth the investment
You will hurt
Add Booties and maybe a hood and you may tough it out....I used a good quality 3/2 this week on a cold miserable windy ( offshore ) morning...outside temp they said was 14...the body wasnt the cold part..the feet and hands I could'nt feel. if the session has 10 or less...which was the case this blustery Morn...your getting a wave every set...so there is minimal sitting around

Mate unless you're on the wim hof/ice bath trip, or have a significant layer of extra insulation (i.e. you're a fatty fat fat) you'll freeze in a 3/2.
Best bet would be to hire a 4mm or 5mm.
The one thing the pool has going for it is you don't really need to duckdive, and if you're careful enough you can get through a session without putting your head underwater.
id be getting some booties, gloves and hood
Stu's Picture speaks a 1,000 words...& Yes the waves will be bigger as picture shows in many ways.

tbb promised to show clues in Stu's photo that reveals Ramping of Waves.
The photo shows major height ramps to Tulla Tub but all are in proportion. (Hence it looks the same!)
At a glance all Wave Cove designs look similar but each have evolved to shape bigger waves.
Here's the Oz Wave Cove Evolution
WA - No console waves peel from centre bank needing wider angles (extra Water / Land costs)
https://img.redbull.com/images/c_fill,g_auto,w_650,h_540/q_auto,f_auto/r...
Sydney - "Low-set" Wave Machine > no Console (See how waves instantly fade) - Not Good!)
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/c8gtbIa4caI/maxresdefault.jpg
Tulla Tub - Low set Machine / Lean over walls tapering down by mid pool with crossover console wash.
https://cloudfront-ap-southeast-2.images.arcpublishing.com/nzme/Y4MR6N74...
New Sydney Design - 2x Height Machine /Walls / Console > No taper (re: All height is Doubled)
https://cdn.broadsheet.com.au/cache/40/a4/40a491f5d63619ddca751d223a645d...
Major Change being the bulking up of height & width of entire wall build.
Take a closer look at ( Lower Right ) Gig Staging area & see 3x3m wall (Ain't no one leaning over that!)
Shipping Containers are 2.6m high so Drop from Machine edge to water is 3m+ (Double Tulla 1.5m)
Check Machine is of equal raised Height to walls ... Massive 3m drop from wall to water surface...
Centre Console has no step down & continues same height affording bigger (2-2.5m) face waves.
As said...it's all in proportion so it's hard to notice any change...
Tulla runs 1.5m swell over low walls... Sydney can contain an extra 1m swell (No wet gig gear...too easy)
Crew can see that Sydney has bulked up & filled out to take on some mighty beasts.
Should eliminate cross belching of Roary's Dueling Beasties.
Recall the original Beast would bellow into the Left line-up shutting it down.
Crew can see there is no chance of cross pollination of arch enemy Natural / Goof lineups
Centre Console is now well "High'n'Dry" for Lifeguard Duty or Photographers but with 360*clear view.
Urbnsurf can harness this contained back wash to ramp each pool & save on power.
They can do this by timing the Wave Train to scoop backwash to Ramp height (As they do now!)
What we see are 2 self contained bulky HD wave Dishes absorbing & ramping power.
That's no slip of the pen...to double ramp imposing height & girth perimeters...reckon it could be on!
Also consider that Willy Wonka is shootin' barrels with the Cooly Kidz...that are powering up!
Come 2023 Each company will need to pit Lodges / Brews / Barrels in cocooned combo packs
Qldurrz > Sunny / Goldie & Surf Lakes all vowed to ramp as big as the can...so Sydney Pair must also.
Town ain't big enough for 4/5/6 players so they gotta rollout some seriously beastly barrels.
As said...We can see here that Sydney Wave Garden is gearing up for the barrel fest...bring it!
Sydney cranks for real waves anyway.
Perth would be ideal ! If the wave responds like a real wave unlike Kelly’s pool... very boring repetitive comp perfection with a weird kind of should response. The tub looks more like a real wave

Reckon urbnsurf got side tracked with the Sydney Airbnb reno & Wave reboot!
Gut feeling. The modules will remain the same as Tulla at 46, at best.
They likely don't want to make one inferior to the other, just a cookie cut.
The delayed response is possibly telling.
I wouldn't bother visiting if its the same as Tulla, the extra 10+ x modules add a whole new dimension to it.
Yeah, that South Korea one looks like much better value for money. Legit great waves.
I agree on the Sydney one. Will be same or very similar to Tulla.
Few things about the South Korea pool:
Heating is via waste heat from a nearby source (not sure if it's industrial, or from a building, but they aint paying to heat it).
The pool was set up as a demonstrative pool, and the barrel settings are not open to public.
Also, don't be too overhyped by the extra modules, sure it looks good in the promo's, but the reality probably is it's even more backwashy and all over the shop than the Tullatub.
Tulla has an additional mode called Beast+(plus) which the bodyboarders got to ride at an exclusive session. Not available to the pubic I think. Same mode in Korea would be interesting.
Given its location should be called Burka Beach.
Lots of examples out there for heating large bodies of water using just the sun.
A combination of technologies would be the go.
Evacuated tubes look very efficient.
As are solar thermal dirt batteries, simply install pipes in every concrete pathway prior to pouring concrete and every area the sun shines on, such as the car park, if the intention is to pave a new one.
OK, and we got ourselves an answer about length of ride in Sydney.
Gonna be the same as Melbourne, so 46 modules long for an approximate 16 second ride.
Long wait for a simple answer, but at least we now know.
Gonna shut this down now and remove off-topic comments.
It's a long way from questions about chlorine barrels.

Surf Tulla 2x in July > (Be one of 9 surfers drawn each week) > First to Surf Sydney
This being the Last Week 4 to Surf Urbnsurf Melbourne to go in the draw...
36 Urbnsurf Melbourne Surfers will Surf Sydney pre opening...
That works Ok as ya gotta Surf 'Twice' in any one week
(Not) Twice over the month or Double session but 2x / week.
Also reckon very few would surf Twice / week mid winter.(Hence Mid Winter Comp /2x Sessions)
tbb reckons that's pretty good odds as far as Kooky Comps go!
Winners are announced on the Monday by first name & Initial.
