Tyler Wright allegedly defrauded $1.5 million by local bookkeeper

Danuta Kozaki
Swellnet Dispatch

Tyler Wright and her family have allegedly been defrauded of over a million dollars by a local bookkeeper on the NSW South Coast.

Shane Maree Hatton, 53, was arrested at a home in Vincentia on Wednesday after a lengthy police investigation, and charged with defrauding clients of $1.5 million over the last decade.

NSW Police said the State Crime Command’s Financial Crime Squad established Strike Force Strathwallen to investigate reports a family business had been defrauded by a woman employed to manage the company’s finances.

After Ms Hatton’s arrest a search warrant was issued, and police officers seized electronic devices and documents.

Police said she had been charged with 749 counts of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception and is due before Nowra Local Court on April 26.

Dave for the less affluent among us do you see Casino as a reasonable investment?

Hi Andy it wasn't my intention to offend, i was just intrigued that people would actually consider 1% on their capital and I'm a little confused about the Casino reference as an alternative. For example, a conservative evenly spread portfolio should yield approximately 8-12% p/a which most super funds offer or SMSF doing it yourself. Looking after your own capital will spare you the plight that Tyler has just experienced and it's not that hard to find good bang for buck. If you had 50k held in a bank earning 1%, Thats $500 p/a and it would take you 10 years to accumulate $5000. Throw some compounding in and that would be $6500, 10 years. My point is, There is life beyond 1% and I don't recommend Casino's.

Sorry mate, I was a bit vague.

No offence taken on my part, I'm just genuinely curious as to what you might recommend (I've chatted to you a few times before out in the water and we have a mutual friend from my work).

The reference to Casino was with a capital C, in other words, for those who have found real estate close to the coast is beyond our means, would you recommend buying real estate in Casino in any way, shape or form.

At the moment, $450k in Goonellabah buys a place in the most feral street in town.

All good,

Not offended, just curious.
I'm more than happy to have a chat on real estate and the conundrum faced by people trying to get market share in a Bull Market. Swell net is probably not the best forum LOL but if you message me on FB i can pass on my contact details. There are more than a few solutions to your questions.

Here’s a straight up question if you feel like answering, Dave : What would you do with $300K cash right now?

Dave Drinkwater's picture
Dave Drinkwater's picture
Dave Drinkwater Tuesday, 6 Apr 2021 at 8:24am

Hey Blowin,
I'm assuming you have cash flow, if so.
Quick Strategy
I would use 100k as a deposit on a medium density house and land to hold for 5 to 10 years (Norelane Geelong). I would rent it out and would borrow approximately 500k. After assessment in 5 -10 years i would pull down the old house and build 3 Townhouses and sell two and keep one. You would own this outright at an appraisal of approximately 750k, no debt and approximately $2400p/m cash flow.

100k would go into a diversified share portfolio looking at 8-12% yield p/a,

60k I would keep in cash ready for any deals or pull backs in any market.

40k would be invested in the crypto market as we have at least 12 months of the bull run left. Half of this would be staked so i can earn a passive income and the other half would be split between BTC and the ALT market.

No Problem Blowin, But i'm not a registered advisor and these are my opinions only. I'm sure you will do your own due diligence and you will notice this is all mostly over a 5-10 year period. So many people looking for that silver bullet get rich quick scheme which as you know doesn't exist. It takes time to accumulate so we can work less and surf more and as i mentioned above the Crypto space has huge gains but if you don't know what you are doing it's easy to get Rekt.

I understand where you are coming from, However,
In 10 years time
Are you saying Norlane, 40min from the CBD, New Highway, upgraded Train service, Airport, on the water, university, major anchors, covid etc.. is going to remain a slumb?
That is what they said about Carrington, wickham, mayfield in Newcastle, Bring a Million
That is what they said about South Brisbane and South Sunshine, Close to a million
That is what they said about Ballina, Bring a Million, east bring 2
I can give you so many examples, One sees garbage the other sees treasure. It's not my first rodeo ..

Actually if you have money it's best not to put in in the bank because inflation eats it up. Best a low cost ETF tracker in my opinion. Certainly not Bitcoin, you could lose everything!

749 counts of 'fraud' ? What gave it away,, number 748 ?
At an average of $2000+ per discretion and around 75 times a year ,,that's staggering not to be noticed.
But yeah , no one likes to see anyone get ripped off and I hope they can recover some of the loot.

I heard she bought a property on the Goldy and sold it a year for the same price, with agent fees and stamp duty a pretty average financial decision especially considering the market has almost doubled since. Using a dodgy book keeper from Nowra instead of proper accountants and financial planners with the amount of money they make sounds like a pretty shit idea to. They should ask Fanning for some contacts, that bloke seems to be all over it.

That's so farked and I hope the Wrights and others can recoup what's rightfully theirs. Don't want to make light of the matter, and it's probably ill-advised to say this, but in a sad kind of way, this does strike a blow for gender equality – Ms Hattton's alleged actions demonstrate the hallmarks of deceipt and criminality (driven by a desperation we can only speculate the circumstances of) that one typically associates with the male sex. So there's that, I suppose.

Roker's picture

Roker Sunday, 4 Apr 2021 at 4:16pm

Yeah, not to downplay the gravity here, but the broader point is fascinating.

Bad behaviour by people of power and influence not down to gender but personality type. Equality measured when the Haley Weinsteins reach parity with the Harvey Weinsteins. The female narcissistic psychopaths just need to be given the same opportunity as their male counterparts. Quotas anyone?

Not based on anything resembling evidence, only the vaguest of observation - women now being relatively prominent in fields such as the media, tv and movie production, politics and the union movement in this country – natural terrain for the aforementioned personality type – it seems to me that this theory doesn’t bear out – and women in power aren’t abusing their position at a level anywhere near that of their male cohort.

There must be studies with data and evidence ‘n’ stuff on this but.

I'm somewhat intrigued that you've brought this up Gra, apparently apropos of not much.
Do you think that's where we're at as a society, do you see mentions of male wrongdoing to be out of proportion to reality?
Is the media hesitant to report female-initiated crime, violence or bad behaviour?

$1.2M is a lot of money to pump into some small town pokies. Wonder if she’s just stashed the cash somewhere and claimed that it’s all gone? Do her 20 months in detention then come out to fact stacks of cheddar she’s hidden in the scrub.

If she has genuinely fallen victim to those evil machines then that should be taken into account in sentencing. I think those things are a curse.

But if it’s merely a ruse to paint herself as a victim and potentially keep the proceeds of her crimes, then that should be taken into account too. Double that 20 months. At least.

10 years is a long time. Those joints are infested with surveillance cameras but I’m thinking they wouldn’t keep recordings for 10 months let alone ten years.

Be hard to prove either way.

Pro Surfers have a lot of down time. More than enough to either manage their own money of do some basic checks on anyone assisting them. With the internet, even if you are away you can check in. 10 minutes looking though your bank statements every now and then. Query anything that does not ring true. Require approval for any larger payments or for categories of expenditure. Look for patterns. etc.

Some basic stuff can save millions. Never be hands off or trust too much.

It’s yet another fraud by someone who would have been trusted by the victim - in this case Tyler. Hard earned cash spent by a crook who wouldn’t have even blinked an eye about ripping Tyler off. If you want to see this on a scale that had ruined 100’s of people’s lives right here in Australia - google Chris Marco of Perth and his evil scheme. The worst of the worst scumbag who ripped off his own family, friends and many others.
