'Heavy Water' tour dates
It's a meeting of the big chiefs.
Michael Oblowitz is a South African filmmaker who earned his chops during New York's No Wave movement and he's made the best surf film you've never seen.
Nathan Fletcher is a third generation surfer who grew up among the glamour of the Southern Californian surf industry but who remains indigenuous to the fringes. He's surfing's high plains drifter.
'Heavy Water' is Michael Oblowitz' biopic on Nathan Fletcher. It traces Fletcher's family tree and digs around the psyche of the fella who stands aside from the modern jock image of the big wave surfer, yet who has caught some of the biggest waves ever ridden.
"It’s a serious look at why we do what we do, the risks and the consequences," says Fletcher. "This movie could only be made by a director who understands surf culture.”
For his part, 'Heavy Water' is a homecoming of sorts for Oblowitz. “My great loves in life are surfing and film making – both those passions found me when I was six years old and for most of my life surfing was an escape from the pressures of my career,” he said.
“But the time has come to combine the two, to make surf movies that are unlike any other surf movie ever made. I’m a surfing anthropologist and my baseline is good storytelling."
