Over the weekend the World Surf League announced that Maya Gabeira has claimed a Guiness World Record in the Largest Wave Surfed Unlimited (female) category.

The 31-year old Brazilian surfed a wave measuring 68 feet / 20.72 metres from trough to crest at Nazaré, Portugal, on January 18, 2018.

In 2013, Gabeira suffered a serious injury at Nazaré.

"It's been quite a journey, but I can honestly say that in 2013 when I first came to Nazaré my life changed like never before,” continued Gabeira. “Of course, there was an accident, injuries and so on, but also I moved to Nazaré to be closer to the wave. I dedicated most of my time to the spot and I had years to focus on improving, on safety and on being around the best people to get where I wanted to be."

For her groundbreaking and life-threatening efforts Gabeira will receive a certificate.

This is the inaugural award for female big wave riders and, not coincidentally, it comes on the same day the WSL launched this season's Big Wave Tour, which includes an invigorated Women's division. Someone at WSL PR is earning their wage.

This year's BWT circuit will have three contests: Nazare, Jaws, and Mavericks. The waiting period for the first two started yesterday while Mavericks opens on November 1st.

As per the last two years, the Jaws Challenge will have a female event, but for the first time there'll also be a female Mavericks event.

Despite scoring one of two perfect tens at Jaws last year and finishing 11th on the BWT, Ryan Hipwood isn't a starter for the event. Hippo will be on the alternates list.

Is it equal prize money for men and women? If it is why not just put it all in one pot and make it one event? Surely they only limiting factor weather you paddle into one or not

Ok I’m going to be that wanker..

Yes it takes guts to even be out there. I wouldn’t be that’s for sure.
But, and here comes the wanker, did she really really “surf” a 68ft wave? No I think she towed onto the fat shoulder of a 68ft wave. (And fell off?)
Anyways, who cares. She’s doing it and I’m a keyboard hero :-)
Haters gon hate

Like Goofyfoot above, i personally think she should have let go of the rope a bit earlier.

I wouldn't be anywhere near the rope...if this counts they should change the name to Biggest Wave Towed Past

Goofyfoot im with you shoulder hopping for sure but anything to do with women
is over hyped beyond reason I think its trying to justify themselves . Just take a look
at their scores on tour. Anyway real equality would be put the women in with the
men. Now that's equality they want so badly.
PS I would never be out there surfing that stuff ever she does have a big go.

She didn't actually fall off. This clip from her instagram shows she completed the ride. Bloody good effort. I've looked at the foam patterns on the wave face and it is the same wave.

Where did they measure the wave from? The peak? She wasn't even on the peak and only rode half the height of the wave at best. To me it comes across as more of the WSL media machine in play. Quite contrived.
