Nine tips to create more surf time
This week, Swellnet's Coffs Harbour reporter Tom Woods and his wife Sherrin gave their website a bit of a birthday. Yep, ST Images has come of age and now when you click aboard you'll now find extra content, added functionality, all weaved among a flash new layout that makes navigation a breeze.
They'll be covering ocean life on the Coffs coast and also on their wider travels, while using photos, words, and videos to tell the stories.
Being a salty zealot Tom knows a thing or two, in fact nine things, about maximising your time in the water. And here they are, straight from the new site...
At the start of last year I had a goal to create more surf time, and who out there doesn’t want more time in the ocean, hey? So I've put together the nine best ways that I’ve done (and observed in others) to increase ocean time. And in case you’re wondering I haven’t stopped working, in fact I've got more on my plate than ever before.
You want more waves? Read on...
1. Do the half hour dash
I see so many crew that will happily blow a half hour checking the surf while talking story with a mate on the headland and then say “It's not that great and I haven’t got time for a surf today anyhow.” Do your checking from the water, jump in… it's the only way. You will never regret paddling out; you get your ocean fix and you arrive at work on time with a smile.
2. Hydrate
You know the feeling, it's Monday morning you just surfed all weekend, you are dried up, out of energy and fatigued. Thing is, it's pumping and there’s hardly anyone out because they all feel the same. This can be overcome with super diligent hydrating, I'm talking at least three litres of water a day (I smash more water than this, some will need more than others). Make sure you do the drinking early in the day otherwise you will chasing your tail. Get in the habit of drinking at least two cups of water as soon as you get out of bed. As soon as I did this I was up for a early surf every day no matter what. I haven’t had a headache in two years! High quality magnesium taken at night is one the best things a surfer can have. Amazing for muscle fatigue, soreness, and keeping the hydration levels in check. You can read more about magnesium on our surf health page here it goes on about its multiple benefits.
3. Surf with frothers
Every beach has a few of them. You know the kind, right? He/she is the one that no matter how bad the waves are, they are seeing gems break all over the place…"Check that little runner”…. “Oh look at Jimmy, he’s ripping out there!” Spend at least a minute with one of these guys each day and soon it will rub off and you will be “the frother”
4. Don’t surf the same place every day
I did this for a few years and nothing sends your surfing more stale than riding the exact same wave every day. As soon as I broke out of that cycle the surfing world and experience expanded out of sight. I know it's easier to lob down to the local each day and have that familiarity, but really you will be doing yourself a favour to break out that little comfort zone that you have created. If you can’t go somewhere different each day at least go somewhere new once a week. If even that's too hard maybe walk up the beach 100 metres…don’t get stale!
5. Get a quiver of weird boards
When you're feeling stale or uninspired take out an ole twin fin or a log or even just a pair of swim fins and go bodysurfing! I've got a mate who surfs on a blow up mat when he’s feeling a bit jaded…. half hour on that thing and he’s back frothing with massive smiles and a renewed love for surfing. Change it up, people, there’s more to the surfing experience than a 6’1 thruster!
6. Keep a surf diary
Write down in a diary each day when you surfed, how it was, and what board you used. It's a way of keeping you accountable. Time can slip away really fast and before you know it you haven’t surfed for two weeks! Writing in a diary will show you that it is possible to fit a surf into your schedule more than you think. Also gives you a incentive to just go out so you can report on something for the day. It's probably not something you would do ongoing, but it's a tool to get you in the groove to surf more… it works!
7. Stretch
Yoga, Pilates, or getting a good personal trainer to do some strength and conditioning training is a guaranteed way to get you more surf time. Not only that but your surfing will improve as well. A few years ago I was going down constantly with lower back problems, most surfers over 25 will know that deal very well. It will get the best of you at some stage. But well advised training programs will keep those injury times to a minimum and you will be pulling turns that you thought were only possible years ago. The difference I've noticed in the last year of doing Yoga and strength and conditioning training a few times a week is mind blowing!
8. Go on surf trips
You will clock up serious hours on a dedicated surf trip. Take the time off work and lock in a time where you just want to surf yourself silly. It doesn’t have to be a chartered two week boat trip in Indo (although that is a good plan), it can be just a weekend road trip with a few mates or even a day trip to a quiet beach that requires a big hike to get into. It will add a bit of adventure and spark to the surfing experience, waves are always better when you are on a trip and nothing gets in the way because you have locked in that time for surfing and nothing else.
9. Set the alarm clock
I've left the most obvious for last, but waking up early is one of best ways to more time, let alone “surf time”. You will be amazed how much stuff you can fit into the morning before the “call of duties” are required. It will feel like you've created a 26 hour day! You can surf a good half hour or more before sun rises (on the east coast) and that might be all you need to get the day started on the right foot. Go to bed earlier, that crappy movie or reality TV show is not worth watching when you can get barrelled in the morning. Get yourself and extra hour in the day, once you get in a pattern you will never look back! //TOM WOODS

Swellnet starts doing lists.
Best click bait ... ever! I love lists! Serious. Yes, deadly serious. You think I am joking don't you?!
"I love lists! Serious. Yes, deadly serious"
You wouldn't be a virgo by chance???? lol
Ahhh living among the stars ...
yeah lol..... I've known 3 virgos pretty closely... All 3 were obsessed with fucking "lists".....
most important - tip 10: live near a surfable coastline.
"This guy moved to China: you won't believe what happens next!"
hahahaha
exactly
we surfed last week. shite!
early next week perhaps a weak swell froma low pressure system off okinawa- Monday to Tuesday - although the long sea shelf may drain all power from what is generated. probably not worth bothering with.
however the following Friday, Saturday, and sunday hold the promise of 16+ second period and 1-1.5 metres of swell. that should create something to slide along.
although, at the key surf site they are building a huge statue of Buddha and will ban surfing there - or charge for the privilege. Buddhism, confucianism, communism, obeying authority, and private beaches you have to pay to surf on. this place is so complicated.
nine tips ain't enough!!
hahahaa, true dat Clif.
Yeah typical click bait... all guff & no answers to the real issues at hand!
...I wanted to know how to manipulate my missus so she let's me do less chores and surf more with my mates while she waits at home or on the beach for hours.
Yocal you have to sort out your job so that you can surf when your wife thinks you're at work. My boss and some workmates surf and we generally use a code of silence to keep the spies down. I have thought of a list to help get surf time without your missus knowing.
1. Tell no one your plan. Including your mates they will fuck up your plan.
2. According to your missus you are going to work for the whole day and not sure what time you might knock off. This is very important.
3. Prepare boards/gear the night before. Get them in the car ready for a clean escape. Do it in the middle of the night if you must. If you try to do it when you leave she will sense the treachery and bust you. I'm sure you guys are aware of a woman's ability to sense treachery.
4. Do it only when you know the surf is good.
5. After surfing take a photo of the surf and send it to all your workmates and boss.
6. Do a little gloating about how good it was.
7. Follow that up with a request not to tell the missus.
8. When returning home remember none of this happened as far as the missus goes. Don't slip up and tell her about how you burnt the old guy to get the best set of the day and got a sick 8 second tube. As much as you want to.
Hopefully this helps a bit.
Ha! Fantastic.
That's a really inspirational piece there Sickaz and thanks for putting your hand up to help. Only thing I can't figure out is where do ya stash your boardies/wetty when you get home to let it dry? The missus would be immediately suss if I offered to hang out and take down the washing
haha number 3 is definitely true - it helps to pack the board and wettie after she goes to bed - just so its ready before you leave for 'work' in the morning
Beautiful.
Also, if you work indoors, make sure you don't get sunburnt. And make sure there is no sunscreen left in your 3 day growth.
Or find a Mrs who doesn't care that you surf when you want to, and throw away the ball and chain while your at it.
Do you have kids?
Why would you want to leave your missus at home?
If your partner does not like surfing with you seashell necklace making is a fantastic hobby! Seek out those seashells! After dinner you have valuable family time doing the threading together. A win on all fronts!
I told my missus about a great family holiday location with snorkling for the kids and great fishing. Success! This winter it's a family holiday to a pacific island. Taking the boards and have a pass to use them. Yeeha!
Sounds like a good plan for the family man Rosso! Where ya heading? Be interesting time hear about your adventure. A mate (also family man) just returned from Samoa bitterly disappointed...
i've sewn so many sea shells, she used to sell them by the seashore, but she don't sell them no more.
swellnet/ACurrentAffair? load of shit! Go fall off a horse Tracey Grimshaw!!!
Oi i'll give the tip don't work in bridge town if you want the late arvo glass... miss ya mum, jessy ,and clohe!!! Back soon!
Go down to the Blackwood and wait for a fat person to paddle a canoe past ya
drink water. nice one.
These comments make me depressed.
Get a job with shift work. You get week days off. After night shift you arrive as the day job guys leave. On arvo shift you can surf all morning (most arvo shifts start 2:30-3pm). Arvo shifts also give you enough time for a short raid up or down the coast. Just remember to take your work gear with you so you don't have to detour home.
If you get long shifts like 10 or 12 hr shifts you get more days off.
#11 - Prepare the missus early when their is a good run of conditions forecast. I told my wife about this week's run of 3ft swell and light winds (on the Sunny Coast) as soon as I noticed so she was prepared. Hassle free consecutive morning's surfs have followed since Saturday, running back in the door minutes before I leave for work while she's been on kids' breakfast duty and getting them ready for school etc on the week days. I promised her she'll get a few morning walks in next week when it drops off (maybe)! (I also prepared her a couple of months ago that it's surf season).
Make sure your Mrs is a BOGAN. They are happy for you go to the beach surfing. Better than being at the TAB.
