img_1441.jpgHe calls it "the last surf shop", and after a three year hiatus it's back in business. This weekend Mick Mock will once again open Little Dragon on Sydney's northern beaches and allow the public to come in and caress his beautiful boards.

"It's totally old school," says Mick, "no big names, no logos, no cash register."

No cash register?

"Cash registers are an eyesore. I just work ot of my wallet. I do have EFTPOS though."

It's one of the few concessions to the modern world Mick is prepared to make. Most of his boards are single fins, the fashion and bric-a-brac is Pacific chic, and Mick is currently smitten by Hawaiiana. "There'll be lots of 1960s and 1970s psychedelica," says Mick.

At one point Mick had one of Australia's - if not the world's - greatest surfboard collections. But for him collecting old board was never about investing for the future, and nor was it just blind hoarding. "My collection was always a reflection of myself and of my journey....without getting too hippy about it."

The name Little Dragon is also a reflection of Mick's journey. It was Bruce Lee's nickname, a reference to 1970s culture that so enamours Mick. "Plus it's better than the Northern Beaches Surfshop," he adds with a chuckle.

In 2001 Mick opened up the original Little Dragon shop, and around the same time he had the first of his board auctions. Through the first decade of the new century board collecting became a serious business and Mick's auctions were essential gatherings.

Around 2010 Mick stopped the auctions and a few years later he closed Little Dragon for personal reasons. Yet during the hiatus he always had people asking him questions about it. Even when Little Dragon wasn't open people appreciated what he does.

When Swellnet called Mick was working around last minute obstacles, wild weather had halted deliveries, yet he was adamant the born again, "man cave-ish" Little Dragon would open its doors sometime this weekend.

But when exactly?

"I don't really have opening and closing time'" admits Mick, "It often depends on the surf."

He does, however, appreciate that people travel great distances to visit Little Dragon so doesn't want to disappoint them. "I don't do Facebook or social media," says Mick, "but they can always call me on my mobile phone."

Along with EFTPOS his mobile phone is the other modern concession Mick Mock is prepared to make. You can call him on 0403 974 967.

The new Little Dragon is located at Shop 4/55 Avalon Parade, Avalon. The entry is on Bellevue Avenue.

I've never met the man. I've never had anything to do with him. No mutual friends.

But I still feel like Mick Mock is a good bloke.

Best of luck with you're new venture cobber.
