Kirra: Hollow by thy name - video
Might as well finish off the week the way we started it, with a clip of pumping Kirra. The Quiksilver Pro starts tomorrow and the short-term forecast looks dire with inconsistent 3' surf at best. Certainly nothing like we've been seeing.
So sit back and enjoy the last we'll see of Kirra for a while. Check Jordy's hack at 2:55, Wayne Deane peeling back the years at 3:15, and like a Where's Wally book Slater can be seen hiding among the throng.
Footage by Tim Bonython.

siiiick. all class. real positive vibe. love it
Hollow be thy name.
Slater "hiding" behind massive hacks and plumes of spray haha. nice one.
Every year another cyclone swell seems to light up Kirra and everyone says it's the best it's been in years.
Stu have you done any archive searching over the past 10 or so years and compared the quality of the waves when it turns on?
I've done a lot or researching Mibs, but the problem is wave quality is such a subjective thing. Add to that the foggy view of nostalgia (everything was better back in the day!) and it makes comparisons a tricky venture.
Few things to note:
Despite the undisputed quality of the wave in recent years, the bank is profoundly different to what it was in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Rather than following the headland, as it did then, it pushes out into the bay making for a faster wave with more shutdowns. Still plenty of barrels but.
The days of hitting up the public purse to 'Bring Back Kirra' are gone. Succesive govts have forked over millions of dollars to remedy the problem - removing the sand manually (really!), changing the outlet pumps, shortening the groyne - but nothing has worked. Instead the excess sand of 5 or so years ago is moving north in a process independent of any human intervention. Also, I've spoken to a few people in govt and the many 'Kirra Is Back' articles and videos haven't been missed by those who sign the cheques. Far as they're concerned their job is done.
A couple of years ago I spoke to a few locals, including Wayne Deane, about the Kirra situation. While recalling the history of the Superbank they spoke in reverent awe about the years 2001-2003: "barrels spitting for 200 metres", "three barrels on a wave" etc etc. The Superbank, while long and dependable, hasn't broken like that since - too much sand in the bay, nearshore bathymetry amiss. The thought hit me then, "Why aren't people vowing to bring back Snapper?" Could the sand be copied to replicate those years? Why wasn't anyone asking the question? The reason, I realised, is that Kirra is as much about past memories as it is about current quality. It's the 'concept' of Kirra and no matter what the sand pumping guys do it'll never match the idea we have in our heads.
While nowhere near as perfect as the 'real' superbank circa 01-03, do you think a disjointed Snapper to Kirra bank allows more punters to catch a wave? Rather than the best of the best hassling at the top of the point and having the wave all the way through, or until dropped in on ;) .
Take another look at " 3 Degrees " , the Parko, Fanning, Dingo promo movie that came out years ago for a bit of a refresher on how good the Superbank was. Amazing.
Great feedback as usual Stu. I remember as a Grom on the annual goldy trek mid 90's-early 2000's Kirra was always the spot to be at. It obviously has changed a great deal since then and earlier.
Come Wednesday week (the 18/19th) we could be looking at All TIME KIRRA??
We deserve it. Believe me!!!
You mean in 2 wks time Tim?
Sorry "Wednesday week" indicates next week. But 18th/19th is the week after.
Thanks.
Do you surf Mr Bonython ? I'm not judging, just curious.
Timmy B........legend Kneeboarder.
Still ?
Yep, still love my knee boarding. Surfed LA last Sunday morning..
Re the possible Kirra swell. If all goes by the Swellnet charts next Thursday week on could be the swell we have been waiting for.. But I am sure Ben will keep us up to-date on that..
Hey Tim.
Shouldn't it be "Hollow BE thy name"?
I think "Hollow BY thy name" is a typo if you are making reference to the King James version of the new testament quote by Jesus when he is reciting the lords prayer.
If you are not, then there is no typo.
Keep up the good work and Carry on.
When does the contest finish as it is flat as a you know what hat at the moment?
