Ricardo Dos Santos dies
This time yesterday we awoke to news that Brazilian surfer Ricardo Dos Santos was in a critical condition after being shot three times at his local beach Praia da Guarda do Embau. This morning we awake to the worst possible news: Dos Santos has passed away. His body unable to respond despite three attempts at surgery, 40 litres of blood, and being placed in an induced coma.
Dos Santos' assailants were an off duty policeman, who pulled the trigger, and his 17-year old brother. Both are now in custody. Reports are still conflicting as to why the shooting occurred (see original report), yet the reality is a young man is now dead. Senseless is the only description for it.
More than any other surfer, Dos Santos' helped shake the stereotype of Brazilians as small wave surfers. In 2012 Dos Santos won the Billabong Pro Tahiti Trials before beating Jordy Smith, Taj Burrow and Kelly Slater in the main event, which earned him the Andy Irons Award for Most Committed Performance. He's been a threat in Tahiti each year since. He also garnered huge respect from the North Shore surfing community for his surfing in Hawaii.
Swellnet's condolences go out to the friends and family of Ricardo Dos Santos, and also to the entire Brazilian surfing community. May something good somehow come from this senseless tragedy.

Thats devastating news.
Deepest sympathies to his family.
RIP. His recent cover of a U.S. mag standing bolt upright in a big blue Indo tube was one of the best photos I've seen
Sad news.

Descanse em paz, Ricardo.
Hope the pricks who shot him rot in hell.Beautiful surfer and an amazing photo above,RIP brother.
Here are some pictures of the Embau Guard, Ricardo Dos Santos' local beach, and place he died while allegedly trying to protect.
And here is a prescient article Dos Santos penned in Brazilian Waves magazine decrying the destruction of Embau Guard: http://waves.terra.com.br/surf/noticias/variedadesambiente/guarda-do-embau/o-desabafo-de-um-local
"I would say the locals do nothing because they are afriad to take a shot [a bullet]. And all because they want some peace..."
"This year I'm choosing not to go to my house in summer. I'm afraid to come home and die of grief..."
Ricardo was also an amazing humble giving person.....he was a guy you would want in your corner....he actually broke the stereo type of the agro Brazilian ......was a very respected surfer who charged!!
R I P mate!!
What a senseless waste RIP
Without getting moralistic, the sort of forces alive at Brazilian breaks put Snapper drop ins and traffic in perspective. Ricardo had passion and obviously style and a protective instinct for nature. This is a crime as well as a tragic waste of life. His family and friends must be hurting badly. I hope they know how widely Ricardo was like and respected. May justice be done.
